Age 30+ / Re: Making Peace with Age
« on: April 16, 2011, 05:07:10 AM »
Hey there!

Welcome to the forums! There is a lot of good info here, even for those of us our age.

I'm 48, and just started PK last year. No, I haven't gotten very far, but I have been improving my conditioning, and working on other things. This summer I am going to focus on my rolls.

There is definitely a place for us in PK, and you may be surprised at the support you get from the younger guys. The amount of encouragement has been awesome. Mostly because we prove that something they love to do can be done for most of their life. Most of the older people the kids know CAN'T do something like this, and they get encouraged by US! If you can handle hanging around a 15 year old with infinite energy, and not get down on yourself; they will encourage and push you as well as they do anyone else. But they also understand fear barriers, and will not make you do something you aren't ready for. The PK crowd is NOT like the skateboarding crowd, where it's all about 'going bigger'.

There is no "hard limit" to how far you can go. Yes, our bodies are more brittle, so we have to be more careful. If we break a bone, it takes a lot longer to recover, and bruises hurt longer. The major limiting factors are conditioning, and fear, and that's the same for everybody.

Welcome Red!

It's very easy to get out of shape as we get older. Good job on working to reverse that!

It helps that you were active before. I wasn't, and it's quite an uphill battle for me. Just make sure you take it slow! If you rush it and get injured, it will set you back a lot more than it did when you were 20.

I'm also jealous, we don't have PK schools in my area. :P

FYI: 25 stone = 350 pounds.

To anyone who thinks it's fine to just ignore your parents wishes, and go do whatever you want behind their back, well, maybe you should re-think your commitment to Parkour. Parkour is supposed to include RESPECT! This means respecting your parents, as well as the environment, the police, and other people you meet in the world. If you are just applying the principles of Parkour to the parts of your life that are convenient, well, you are missing the point.

I wonder, if you had a bench in your back yard, would you be allowed to train on it?

If the answer is no, then you are going to have trouble with this. Some people were raised this way, it is a very old-fashioned way of looking at the world, and it could be very difficult to change their minds. Don't push too hard, it will just put their backbone up, and make it impossible. You will have to whittle away at it slowly, a little bit at a time.

If the answer is yes, then could this be an excuse so that you aren't seen doing this in public? Some parents don't want their friends thinking their son is "different", and if they see you jumping over a bench in a park, there could be questions. It might just be embarrassing to them. This also isn't so easy to get past. :)

If you had a group of friends going out all together to do this, that might help ease the concerns. It's not "just you" doing this.

The Islands - Welcome! / Re: Maui

Does anybody know what happened to Gregg? I visited in Nov, we had a great day of hiking my first day there, and a nice dinner the next night, and then I never heard from him again, and he hasn't logged on to APK since then, either.

I've been rather worried.

Greg and I found this one, looks like it has a lot of potential!

Ok, so maybe the expanse of lava fields around it might be a small deterrent.....

Oh, and the fact that it's at 6000 feet elevation...

Umm, and that it's a 4 mile hike down 1000 feet of switchbacks to get to it....

Still, its an awesome rail and picnic table, with almost no one around to complain!   ;D

Well, I'm here!!!

Met up with Gregg yesterday, did a lot of hiking (Ok, only 10 miles) In the Haleakala crater. Elevation killed me, and I'm walking like the old man I am today, but I had a blast!

And today is my 48th birthday.

Lets get some more pictures of people wearing APK Gear in here!!! :P

Old school APK shirt from 2005 still wearing it.

Don't you think after 5 years you should take it off and wash it once?   ;D ;D ;D

Did some strength training last night. Pretty sad [compared to where I was 2 years ago]. Let's see how fast I can get back to that peak. I haven't even dared do the 12 MN tests again.

Don't worry, I'm horribly out of shape, so you will look like a 28 year old gymnast compare to me when I get there!

(Not that it's a competition, of course, but it should make you feel better!)

"-ADD or ADHD - usually untreated."

Nope: But of course, there was no such thing as ADD or ADHD when I was young. They had a cure for children that couldn't pay attention back then. It was called "the back of your dad's hand." Don't confuse bad parenting with a medical condition, either.

   "-Random as hell humor"

Wrong again: This is a by-product of that "lack of attention" problem. Honestly, all that random humor annoys the hell out of me.

"-very intelligent, but the grades don't/didn't show it. generally lack of interest in school"

I had subjects I liked, and subjects I didn't, but for the most part, this is somewhat true. However, it was more the fault of the teachers, than anything. If the teacher had a clue and was interesting, I enjoyed it.

"-good at sports but dislike the rules (might not do school sports purely because of the rulebook for them)"

LOLZ! I absolutely sucked at sports. Hated playing them. Hated watching them. Of course, I was forced to play, and no body ever wanted me on their team. I was always the second to last person picked in gym. (There was actually a guy who was worse than me) The only sport I was remotely good at was dodgeball. I was pretty good at dodging, but when it came time to throw the ball back, yea, it was pitiful.

So, .5 / 4 for me, not a very high ratio.  :P

But of course, I'm old, and throw off the curve...

I'm keeping it safe, Frosty. No worries. My free time is going to be mostly afternoons, which isn't best for snorkeling.

Got this from Derek:

Hey,
Thanks for checking up on me.
I moved to Seattle 2 months ago for photography school. Injury wise I am struggling to run more then two miles without my knee locking up. Been to the gym a couple times. But I don't trust the knee enough yet. I did throw a double back off the rod floor into a softer mat last Thursday. So I am progressing.

Sorry for being an ignorant haole, but what is the best time for snorkeling?

Glad to hear Derek is getting better!

Just don't hurt yourself again, Gregg! I want you to be able to show me the sights!  ;D

I was at least hoping maybe you would have some time for snorkeling/free-diving at some point. Although I do realize it's over Thanksgiving, and that will be family time for you.

Parkour And Freerunning / Re: My husband doesn't approve
« on: October 18, 2010, 04:18:39 PM »
Like M2 said, it's not just Parkour. I'm turning 48 next month, and I drive a jeep around in the forest. It can get pretty muddy if it's rained recently. I get a lot of stares driving down the highway with a mud covered jeep, and I get other people taking pictures of it, because it's not something you see every day. Most of these people get cars that do everything they can to insulate them from the rest of the world.

But driving with the top down through the autumn trees, with the full color of fall leaves surrounding you, just can't be beat.

No matter what you do, if it's not the "norm", you may get ridiculed, or laughed at, or envyed. It's usually all three at the same time.

Just take it easy with your husband. Try to train out of sight of others when possible. If he sees you are still interested in a few months, maybe he will begin to understand.

Adding another question to the list... LOL

How well do they breathe? The Tigers have a very open, extremely breathable mesh, and they will NOT work for me here in the winter. My feet will freeze. They were awesome in the summer, but yea, winter will suck. I need to find a shoe that will keep my feet warm.

18
So does that mean my side has won by default?

No, that means everybody loses.

Yeah, not what I was saying at all, but you're from jackson so the fact that you've learned to use a computer at all astonishes me and I'll let it go. I'm saying there is a perfect analogy in place (or READY to be in place) that alleviates the pressure in the situation. He was saying he wishes we had something all encompassing like "Martial Arts" which I had already made a DIRECT comparison to earlier in the thread.

I think if anyone reads this thread and thinks I'm okay with the equivocation of Parkour and Freerunning then you need to retake 3rd grade reading comprehension. Or in the case of Jackson, 8th grade reading comprehension  :P

I'm hoping this is a school rivalry thing and both of you will take this in good humor?

Actually, I didn't say I wished for one, i was just pointing it out, havn't somehow missed that part of your post.

Sadly, "Movement Arts" doesn't flow off the tongue very well, and flow is important. Besides, being old, it also brings to mind "bowel movements". (When you get to be my age, you will understand)

Funny, I saw this thread was 3 pages wrong....

Typo? LOL

Maybe the problem is one of genre? "Martial Arts", while all being different in form and intent, have a common term called "Martial Arts". We have no such all encompassing term, and some people are trying to push the word "Parkour" into that role, which is ticking off the people who are trying to keep their intent behind "Parkour" constant?

The problem, is there is no suitable word that everyone can agree on, I'm guessing.
