Socialize / Re: Need Help - Swim Team Dilemma
« on: November 30, 2010, 12:06:49 PM »
Hey Shay. I was a competitive swimmer for around 8 years. Swimming is mostly cardio and pulling strength plus the core strength that you need to kick. And as with most sports, there's a definite technique to it. You'll probably get used to the cardio part & controlling your breathing pretty quickly. Learning the technique is what will take substantial work, patience, and perseverance. It's like parkour in a way. Almost anybody can make a jump. It's the ability to stick the precision that's impressive. It's the technique behind that landing. So you can probably get across a pool fairly quickly but you won't have the pretty technique or efficiency of people who have been swimming for years.

I loved being a swimmer. I put a lot of hard work into it and it's what kept me in shape through my teen years. It's also a very rewarding sport on an individual and team level. At every meet you want to do your personal best or go for your PR (Personal Record) and that is also contributing to the points you get as a team. And your teammates sound awesome. That's important! So if you've got the money, I'd say go for it. And diving is awesome too. I only did that for a year but I had fun!

As for parkour and swimming. I would say parkour would benefit your swimming. Yeah, swimming will help your parkour, maybe for something specific like the pulling motion of a climb up because swimmers have very good pulling strength but it won't help with pushing strength (say a kong). Swimmers are strong but their strength is different. If you're doing body weight strength training for parkour that will help you immensely in your swimming. Also, I'd recommend weighted lower body work outs. Sometimes in swimming, the strokes that people have trouble with is manifesting a weakness in a certain area of the body. Butterfly, for example is mostly core (esp. abs) and shoulders. I really like the cardio and breathing control aspect of swimming, though. That has helped me tremendously in just daily life. It's healthy!

Hope it works out for you and if you ever have any questions about anything swimming related I'd love to help!

I used to crochet... But I lost it all because I stopped practicing! And I had some pretty awesome needlework too. Life just got busy and now I don't have time. Maybe one day, again. Hehehe

Until recently, I've been the only girl at most of the jams I've been to. Also, when I started parkour, I had to train with a bunch of guys I didn't know. You go in knowing you'll be swimming against the current.

Honestly, be yourself. Do what you're comfortable with. I know in another thread you said you loved lazy's. Find a spot at the jam and do a couple of those before you try anything else. My experience with most guys who train parkour is that they are encouraging and sweet. They'll be impressed if you move. Show them what you've got, even if you think it's not that much. Parkour is about you and what you're working on at this time in your training.

You've got this (:

Haha, idk how you can do a lazy with a cup of coffee in your hand. Pretty sure both your hands touch the rail. However, I could definitely see you doing a speed vault!

Pics & Vids / Florida Parkour (Orlando/Daytona Jam)
« on: November 03, 2010, 05:00:19 PM »
This is some footage of a jam held a couple weekends ago, in Orlando, Saturday and Daytona on Sunday. Thanks to all of FLPK who came out and Jace Iley, who filmed and edited. We had people from Pensacola, Daytona, Gainesville, Tampa, and Orlando among other cities in FL. Also, props to the 4-5 ladies who came.

We all trained hard and had tons of fun, as well!! Hope you all enjoy (:

Hey Taylor. I already commented where you posted in the women's forum but after reading what Gabe and Adam said, wanted to give you my opinion as a "woman" with rather slow climbups, myself.

While there's nothing wrong with the leg to help you get up over the wall, if you are trying to achieve a stronger & faster climbup, you are better off doing your climbups over and over again. No one, guys or girls, are going to have a fast climbup if they do not just keep trying them. Therefore, if you want to get over the wall faster, use the leg. If you want a fast climb up, push yourself to make your current climb up better by perfecting your technique and building strength by conditioning. And also, just practicing the movement over and over again, in and of itself will build strength.

Also, if you can, practice everyday. Even if it's only 10 minutes a day, you'll have beautiful climbups in no time!

It's the one from off the log. Your feet got so high, it looked like you could crane it. Even precision it! Haha

Looking awesome :) I really like your kong precision in the beginning.

Since you asked for feedback:

If you are going to be training a lot, it would also be helpful to do some conditioning. Check out eatmoveimprove.com . Doing all the lower body and upper body conditioning will help you to be stronger and more controlled in your movement. You have some great running precisions but weren't sticking them.

Overall, good parkour in your video. You're only three months in so with more practice and experience you'll be sticking your precisions in no time!!

To Adam & Andy:

As I said "I would speak to you in private." Which means, I will. Or I would rather. And yes of course, I know how to contact you Andy.

What I said in my post was meant for you to think about what you were saying. Also, I said it was not of the "friendly and respectful nature that I would expect..." And then the rest of what I have to say, I'm not saying in this thread but privately to you all, when I can. As I think that it is much more appropriate than posting it all here.

You two know me well enough :)

Andrew can be derogatory at times. He’s also very loud. Sometimes it’s annoying but when you come to actually know a person, you see beyond the façade they put up and see what they really stand for. Probably in all our lives we’ve argued with someone in a nasty way. It doesn’t help your point and it’s not pleasant for all parties involved, but it happens. We are human beings.

That being said, Andrew, I’m disappointed by some of the language you used and the way you said some things. I’m also rather proud of the one post where you speak about education and culture. That’s the Andrew I know. You know I’m always onto you about your lack of brain filter.

While it is hard to be objective about things, I think it’d be beneficial to all involved to stop letting your personal opinions of people get in the way of what is being discussed.

Andy & Adam, I would be very happy to be “as good” as you all in the next year. However, my goal is not to be as good as “Adam and Andy”. I work very hard conditioning and training parkour. And if all that hard work and training in a year means I come to the same level as you two than it simply means I have pushed myself very hard and dedicated a lot of time to my training. We all have different goals, different lives, and different ways of training. It’s not a competition to me. It is what it is.

And yes, while here in FL, we are making lots of wonderful progress with our community, it doesn’t make us better than anyone else and I think all of us from FL agree with this statement. I just spoke about personal attacks.

Also, though, to Adam and Andy, I would speak to you privately about what has gone on. And although Andrew said some unnecessarily rude things, I cannot say you all have been pillars of all that is sweet and good. So while the FL community has made clear that it does not condone Andrews recent actions, I ask you to look at your own posts and words and see that at times, while they were not terribly wrong, they were also not of the friendly and respectful nature that I expect from two knowledgeable and esteemed members of the parkour community.
