Socialize / Protect your internet rights

I need you guys to spam this link wherever possible and to please fill out the form yourself. There really is nothing that will benefit any one of us if this bill goes through

The PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) is a threatening sequel to last year's COICA Internet censorship bill that would -- like its predecessor -- invite Internet security risks, threaten online speech, and hamper Internet innovation.

Please consider urging your members of Congress to reject this dangerous bill:

Socialize / A Cure for Cancer

http://www.sott.net/articles/show/228583-Scientists-cure-cancer-but-no-one-takes-notice

It sadly doesn't surprise me that this hasn't been circulating on the news... The Pharmaceutical companies can't continue to make extreme profit on cancer patients if we all learn about this, so they'll try to hush it up.

Please pass this around and/or research it and see if you can find more articles. I'd rather save people than see a few people's bank accounts grow

Socialize / Critique my *test* Stop motion?

I'm assuming even those of you who aren't my friends can still see that, if not let me know.

This was just a TEST video so I could get the feel of what I plan on making. If anyone has some cool ideas I'd appreciate em. I'm thinking I'm going to go with a serious theme, and I'm feeling the song "The Pot" by Tool will be good to use for it. I will post the final product when I'm done

Socialize / Stupid decisions
« on: February 21, 2011, 02:36:07 PM »
So four kids from my school robbed a Burger King last night. One of these four, ironically, was my class president. This kid not only robbed the place but he beat one of the workers too.
News report here

They're facing 4-15 years of jail now. They're popular and their parents have a lot of money so they probably won't end up getting the brunt of things. I assume this will lead to heightened security in the area which could POSSIBLY mean that my parkour training and night time jogging may be affected.

I'm posting this here just to remind you all to think before you act, and realize that your actions may go farther than expecting. They were probably drunk and/or high (they're that kind of people) so this is also a reminder that you do NOT control yourself as well as you could when you're on drugs as opposed to being sober. Stay safe everyone, and keep yourself out of drugs.

Parkour And Freerunning / Glass VS Contacts
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:39:57 PM »
I'm putting this is General Discussion because I want to ask this question in accordance to training.

I assume glasses could fall off and break, but contacts may dry up. I was just wondering if you guys could share your personal preferences. My eyes are getting pretty bad and I'm prolly gonna be going and getting one or the other soon. I'm leaning towards contacts because I despise glasses, but I'd rather do glasses if they'll interfere with training less.

General Fitness / Back Lever... Aches?
« on: January 24, 2011, 05:17:00 PM »
I've been working some static bodyweight exercises (L-sit, Back lever, Front lever, Frog stand) and I noticed when I come down from my back lever that my back feels a type of "relief" but almost like an ache. It's the feeling you get (or at least, I get) when you lay down at the end of the day on your back and it's like a good hurt. This is stronger though and almost makes it hard to breathe (I can breathe fine, just the feeling makes me not want to). Is this simply because I'm using muscles I'm not used to using? I'm still in the tuck and slightly elevated hips stage but I try to keep my back straight. This isn't really an injury so I think it fits here. If you can tell me what to do to stop this or at least tell me it's normal I'd appreciate it haha.

Is it alright to take all three of these things at the same time or any combination of the three near the same time?

I don't want any of the effects of them to be negated by the other

In the Media / Jump City: Seattle (A post they made on Facebook)

Jump City: While you're out jumping off walls, buildings or attempting to pull off a nice flow, check out the new Jump City: Seattle mobile site on your iphone or Android. http://m.jumpcity.g4tv.com/

This is why I think a lot of traceurs don't like parkour getting attention from the media... We aren't about "jumping off walls and buildings" at all... At least they put the "flow" in there...

I mean I know it's kind of nit-picky and they're just trying to get their ratings up, but they should respect our discipline for what it is. They don't have martial arts shows and say "While you're out ripping people's Trachea's out, killing them with pressure points, or just practicing forms, you should check out our new website" so they shouldn't treat us this way.

I dunno, maybe I'm looking into a bit to much, but my mind does things like that by itself haha

Anyone else have thoughts or have power to contact them or something?

General Fitness / Weighted vests or similar?
« on: January 18, 2011, 05:15:57 PM »
I was thinking that instead of buying a weighted vest I'd just carry a back pack with 30 lbs of weight in it all day. I figure if my body gets used to toting the extra weight I will be able to move faster and with greater ease when I don't have it.

My question is this - would a backpack be bad because the weight is all on my back whereas a vest it would be evenly distributed throughout?
Plus is this really worth doing? I walk to school, and two and a half out of 7 and a half periods I walk almost the whole time (The half is lunch, one class is me running passes and random things through the building for the office, and the latter is gym, where I do nothing but walk because I don't enjoy sports other than parkour). The rest of the time would be during our 5 minute passing periods

Parkour And Freerunning / Mindfulness while training.
« on: January 16, 2011, 07:22:02 PM »
Well for those of you who don't know me too well, I've gotten into Buddhism a lot this past year and one thing Buddhism teaches is mindfulness. In short, mindfulness is just simply paying attention to a specific thing in great detail. Benefits can be a calming effect, a deeper understanding of something, or just a heightened awareness of what you're really doing. It's kind of hard to put into words, but it can be a very eye opening and thought-provoking practice.

But back to my reason for creating this thread! I'm sure some people are like "No religion here kid!" so I'll get on with it haha. Mindfullness while training for parkour is an extremely eye opening experience. It is hard to put total focus on every little detail when you have to worry about things like gravity, executing your technique, and breaking bones if you fail.

When you slow down your movements and replay them in your head it's really interesting to see how much work your body does for things that seem so simple. Take a landing for example: you normally think "Land on balls of feet, legs absorbed the shock, keep moving". But when you slow down and replay that landing in your head you realize how many things your body does just to accomplish this. Your eyes spot the ground, you judge the distance and get your legs at the right angle, (I'm barefoot so I've got a bit more going) you land with the back part of your toes a little bit, big toe first and the rest follow suit as the balls of your feet come down. A large amount of muscles in your feet tense and it progresses up your leg. The front of your shin, the back of your shin, your quads, you abs and then you hear your landing "was it quiet enough?" you might ask yourself. Then your back muscles activate, your arms come in to touch the ground for stability - your pecs flex, your shoulders flex, your hands extend and your hands finally come down towards the ground. They touch it for a split second and then start pushing back making your forearms clench, your triceps flex, and some back muscles flex. Your abs take an active role now pulling your body away from the ground,as do your quads, lower back, and shins. Your feet then start pushing and your off in the direction you chose to go in before the jump even took place.

Your mind processes so many things and your body is capable of so much it's incredible. When you really pay attention you gain a deeper appreciation for what you can do. I wanted to let you all know that the inspiration for me to write this post up was a landing from a failed back lever on my pull-up bar. I realized how much work my body does in that split second from losing control to landing on the ground and it's all subconscious. The human mind is well... Mind-blowing haha.

I plan to implement this into my training next time I have the chance to get out. Let me know what you guys think or if you've ever done this before.

General Fitness / Buying some weights... Would like advice
« on: January 14, 2011, 05:23:13 PM »
I was thinking about getting a bench set, but then my dad figured we could instead go a bit better and get like an all-in-one type of thing (like a cage or something).

We got to searching the internet for things that looked good and came with weights (as we don't want to be weights separate). He really likes the look of Bowflexs (Specifically the pr1000) but I was wondering if those are comparable to free weights. I'd assume you can't work explosive movements as well with a bowflex like hang cleans, thrusters, etc.
Any advice would be appreciated, and as my dad was willing to help with paying for the bowflex, I assume that I can drop about 600 dollars for this max.

So general questions:
Free weights vs resistance
Best way to go with the winner? (Like if it's free weights should I get a cage or a bench and separate added weights to use for squats and such)

By the way - I'm looking at this using the weights for conditioning for parkour, not bodybuilding or anything else.

Thank you in advance

Parkour And Freerunning / Hmm.. (Random thoughts)
« on: January 12, 2011, 08:37:31 PM »
So again, it has been awhile, and I hope to frequent APK again like I did back in the day. Things seem different here, but still the same amazing community (with many added members). I have been practicing parkour since April of 09, but I feel I have the skill level of a lot of people who've been practicing for less than a year (though I have a lot of knowledge built up, and experience). This year I want to commit to parkour. I miss the rush, I miss the blisters, I miss the cuts, and I miss learning. Parkour has regrettably been on the back-burner for awhile and that needs to change. I've come up with a few rules I'm going to try to implement into my life in hopes of keeping me motivated.

1) A minimum of 5 techniques a day. This includes vaults, rolls, QMing (1 technique would be either a minute of practice or an actual usage of it), etc.
2) Watch a PK related video daily, or at least almost daily. This one isn't as necessary but I figure every time I feel like I don't have the energy to work out, or go train, this will help motivate me.
3) Eat healthy. This isn't entirely related to PK, but it's something I feel I should do to improve my body overall. I've cut back to almost no meat mostly for personal reasons, but I still eat it. I want fruits and veggies to be a main part of my diet.
4) Roll. A lot. I neglected rolls for some reason. I learned them when I started, then I learned vaults and wall-runs and the like, and then I stopped practicing rolls. Why? Who knows... But that stops now.
5) Repetition. If one of my daily minimum techniques end up botched, it gets redone. No exceptions.

That's about it for now as far as the rules. I plan to force myself to start jogging again tomorrow night not taking weather into the equation unless it could be dangerous. I dislike running in shoes but I guess it's better than frost bite. I'm going to work out daily unless I'm too sore, but that is my only reason not to (except time barriers I guess, haha). I will be taking more protein than in the past to make up for my lack of meat intake. Yes, I take a MV. I also take fish oil ;). I hope to be posting a lot more now... It feels good to be back (again, haha).

I'm setting APK Forums to my home page after this in yet another attempt to keep me on my course. If anyone else has some suggestions that have helped them in the past please share them.
Thank you all for past and future support, it really means a lot to me. I'm glad I have such an awesome group of people in my (sorta)life.

Consumer Whores / Ariake vs 5.10 FR in weight and padding
« on: January 12, 2011, 08:11:32 PM »
I assume this is probably somewhere on here but I just went through five pages of Consumer Whores and didn't see it (yes, I searched too).

Which one is lighter? Which has less padding?

I'm more of a barefoot kind of guy now, but I realized that my fear is one of the main things holding me back (My Vibrams are great, but I'm always scared I'm going to break my toe on a botched cat, or get something jabbing through the side of a toe pocket). I run barefoot, and can barely stand running in shoes anymore. I have a pair of Feiyues but I don't like how they lose all grip when wet... even if  my new pair does a bit better than my first pair...

I was looking at the KOs a bit but they seem as if they're on back order again (as the site says I can "pre-order" them). I'd rather get my shoes before I find the need to spend my money on something else haha.

Thanks for the help guys

Injuries - Discussion / Random knee pain
« on: September 05, 2010, 09:34:56 PM »
I haven't done anything lately (no working out or pk for two or three days) and this morning I woke up with a weird pain above and to the sides of my left knee cap. It feels like a weird type of pressure and is only painful when I fully extend my leg. I took some tylenol but it's not really doing anything
I was hoping to find something on google but I didn't. The closest was something with the iliotibial bands but that doesn't sound like it's exactly it

Edit: it just started hurting while I walk and it's giving me a slight limp

Socialize / ACTA (comments and stances?)
« on: August 22, 2010, 08:23:15 PM »
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement

I've been told the contents of this have been very secretive though it is likely going to be used to censor a LOT of content on the internet. Not only that but it has violations of the constitution (the 4th, because it will make it so any company that "thinks" you might be illegally downloading their stuff they can demand a log of all your internet activity without warrant or even probably cause for that matter).

I'm against it because I haven't heard anything positive and from what I know, it sounds like the government is just trying to control what we get to see on the internet (which is ALSO against the constitution).

If you oppose I've come into contact with a handy little link to bomb the search of "ACTA unconstitutional" on yahoo, bing, and google 3 times each with a refresh rate of once per 1 or 2 seconds.

http://anti-acta.com/bomb.htm

EDIT: I hope this isn't deemed to be against the rules of the forum. If it is I would completely understand that this thread gets deleted, and I'm sorry for such an offense  ;)

Socialize / It's been awhile....
« on: August 13, 2010, 06:27:14 PM »
I've been gone for so long from APK that I nostalgia'd looking at some of the thread names. I mean, I had 49 pages of "unread posts since my last visit". As far as what I've been doing: I originally decided that I was getting too sidetracked on the internet, and my plan was to try to turn my computer time into workout/training time. However, what ended up happening was me losing all motivation to do anything physically challenging for like a month and a half. However, it wasn't all bad. I reconnected with my gaming self on Fallout 3 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 (maybe not a good thing, lol), I became more active in my Buddhist studies, and just kinda chilled.

I wish I didn't let all of this happen without parkour, but I'm not going to lie; I did. I've probably gained a few pounds and lost some of my definition, but I still have a few months left of warm weather here to get back into it. I shall start pestering my friends to come train with me again, and make them help me stay motivated. I'd like to say "HI!!!!!" to everyone, and let you know I'll be frequenting APK again, as I've learned I lose motivation without your guys' help. If you guys would be so kind as to help me out, I'd like to know what's been going on here, in the PK community, and I'd love it if you guys could post some sick videos that've come out recently to help get me motivated again.

P.S. How do you guys like my improved grammar skillzzz?? I've decided to stop being lazy and actually hit the shift button and the apostrophe button now  ;D

Movement / Going Barefoot: Worries, Questions, and Thoughts
« on: May 04, 2010, 08:30:38 PM »
***im not too sure if this is the right board to post this in, could go in GD, not positive mods can decide***

now that its warm im going barefoot a lot more. in fact, every day after school i plan on coming home and shedding the VFFs unless im going to go train (i train at a wood park, so i dont want huge splinters in the feet).
as much as i LOVE walking through grass, the thought of stepping on a hidden bee or piece of broken glass kind of unnerves me. (though, the glass thing sort of worries me, as my neighborhood has a lot of teens that like to throw glass bottles at the ground, even on the cement.)

i would like to get some insight from someone who goes barefoot a lot about glass and bugs and poison ivy/oak and the like.

first off, do callouses protect from glass once they get strong? i assume maybe small pieces, though thats all im worried about, i should be able to spot the big ones...

bugs: how do you spot and avoid them, and what do you do to get their bites/stings healed quickly with the least irritation from shoes (when you need to wear them).

poison ivy/oak and other sharp and irritating things found in nature: how to avoid, how to treat, etc etc..

other injuries: ideas on making your feet happy, and cool concoctions you may know to get rid of pains, heal cuts, and all that fun stuff

also, i want to make this thread a sort of database about barefoot freerunning/parkour (maybe make a childboard?). any questions people have, ask them. any useful tips/tricks/advice - list it. any good articles or videos, link em. basically, anything barefoot-related goes here (except fetishes  :-X)

Parkour And Freerunning / some advice please?
« on: April 27, 2010, 07:02:13 PM »
so ive been doing parkour since april of last year. it was all by myself and me being the demotivated lazy person that i am never trained to much, and i really regret it. i want to be training ALL the time this year, and REALLY devote myself. my problem, however, lies with my girlfriend, whom ive been with since january of last year. she was supportive (sort of lol) of parkour last year, and even agreed to train with me once (never happened). this year i found some people to train with finally, which makes staying with it a LOT easier for me, and she all of the sudden has a problem with me doing parkour. she wont tell me WHY she has a problem and the only thing i can see is that im hanging out with some new people (boo-hoo right?) and im spending a little less time with her.

ive tried explaining to her that parkour is my lifestyle, its what i love, and its something i can get good at, and no one will judge me (outside of people like "WTF ARE YOU DOING?!?!"). ive explained the philosophy and ive tried to get her interested in many ways, but alls she does is complain and act super depressed when i go off to train (she knows how to pull my strings, shes not really THAT affected by it, i can tell).

does anyone have any suggestions? i cant have her being pissed at me in the back of my mind every time i train, its too distracting and will ultimately lead to less training and more slacking off like i did last year.

tl;dr girlfriend gets mad when i train, what do?
