MN Jams / Re: The 8th month of the year! October Jams!!!
« on: October 09, 2007, 02:15:41 PM »
**Brushes the dust off his computer**

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been MIA for about a week.  Work is crazy and I was camping all weekend.  Did anybody jam?  I'd be up for something this coming Sunday, the 14th, preferably in Minneapolis, as my time is relatively short.  In the good news section, I pulled off my first few rolls and saut de chat successfully!  I also, however, sliced the bejeebus out of my thumb doing a lazy vault on a sign with a sharp metal undercling.  In any case, I'm feelin good and ancy, so let's get things moving.

Oh, and skinny, your edit in my previous entry was incorrect.  I didn't use Parkour as a verb, but as an adjectival noun modifier to the word "run", as in a run that is Parkour.  I've read plenty here to know that Parkour is not a verb, so don't correct the language teacher, please.   :P

Hope to finally meet some of you guys soon, and I really hope these gale-force winds die out soon.

Skinny,

Have you tried Gleason's?  The Eagan location is close to where I work, although waiting until 7 or 8pm would suck.  Thanks for the info.  I'll check into it.  Any of you interested in "playing" there sometime?  Could be a great way to increase skills quickly and in a safe way.  In any case, when was the last time you really got to jump around in a padded room? (mental ward cell not included)

MN Jams / Gym Space for PK
« on: October 01, 2007, 07:20:05 PM »
Guys,

I just finished watching "Jump Britian," and after watching the part where they all met in the gym for the day as a sort of trace training day, I wondered if there's anything like that around here, or even a gym (read: gymnastics type of gym) where one could conceivably experiment and train for PK.  I'm still really paranoid about vaulting and would LOVE to test it out with some padding first.  Any hints or insider tips?  I work at a high school, and will talk with the Athletic Director, but I don't think he'll go for it.  Who knows?  Ideally I'd love to get in on one of those PK training workshops that I keep seeing vids for, although most of them are in Europe.  Good excuse to get off the N. American continent, right?

Side Note: I won't be able to jam this weekend (Oct. 5ish), as I'll be camping in WI.  Maybe some forest PK for me.  Hope to hook up with some of you sometime soon.

MN Jams / Re: Holy Fall Batman! It's time for Sept. Jams!

Guys,

The weather for tomorrow is looking downright miserable, with 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms all day; a wet and possibly electrified mess.  How hardcore are you?  Parkour RunParkour in the rain?  Not sure if I'm ready for that yet, but maybe after I finish growing webbed hands.

Just curious to know what you all are thinking.  And here I was so looking forward to it.

*Skinny edit: Parkour is not a verb, thank you*
**Skinny edit again: After being totally burned, and rereading it, I am mistaken.**

Gentlemen,

I hope to join and introduce myself, but probably to watch mostly. I'm still healing from "the ab incident," and on top of it I got sick last night.  Bummer.  Sunday, 2pm at the pit?  The pit is the spot under the Hennepin bridge over the river, right?  Lookin forward to it.  I might have some info on other spots to practice as well.  I've been on a mission lately.

Until then, same bat time, same bat channel.

MN Jams / Noob Quasi-Geezer Intro
« on: September 22, 2007, 09:32:13 PM »
I thought it an appropriate time to introduce myself, as I've been reading through these posts for a while now, along with obsessively researching all parts of Parkour.  I'm soon to be 31 (apparently the old man in the bunch), but have always been an athlete and keeping fit (avid nordic skier, rock climber, kayaker, soccer player), and after discovering Parkour, I'm hooked!  I started an official training regimen to work on the parts that need help for this kind of thing, and trying some moves slowly.  My mind, however, is finding places constantly, everywhere I go.  I live near the U of MN campus, and found a secluded little park to practice, and will soon be ready to join the rest of you.  At the moment, I'm getting my confidence up with the phsycial training, but also recovering from an ab injury during some easy precision jumps early on (I never realized how important it is to stretch your stomach muscles too - ouch, but a good thing it's not a hernia).  This is my chance to totally erase the "I'm too old" crap that's been lurking in my head the last year since I turned 30.  Hell, David Belle is 34.  I'll be keepin my eye out here for jams upcoming, but also wondering what you all do in the winter, especially without a gym.  I'm too cheap and completely uninterested in going to a gym when our natural environment is so much better.  I look forward to joining this community, and applaud the many great ideas and connections shown so far.  I hope you'll welcome this almost ancient quasi-geezer into the fold.

I may add my contact info to the list later, but for now I'm feeling a bit too private.  If we meet in person, I'll share info then.  Until then, however, play smart, play hard, and dream of flight.

General Fitness / Winter Training and Frequency
« on: September 22, 2007, 12:26:57 PM »
I'm noob to parkour, but definitely not to exercise and training, but now I'm totally stoked to have found motivation to do the exercises and training that I have abhored until now.  I do, however, have two questions:
1.  Any recommendations on where to train in the winter in snowy MN when I have no access to a decent gym, and am too poor to spring for a membership somewhere?  One of the things I love about Parkour is that it can be done without a gym or a lot of equipment, if done smartly (although that stuff certainly helps and has a place in training).  I have 10lb hand weights and a yoga ball at home, which help.

2.  I've been running everyday (3-4 miles) and doing strength work/stretching as well, alternating sets of  exercises based on muscle group (i.e. push ups one day, pull ups the next).  My question is, is there much talk about doing one set of something everyday until you're burnt, or 3 sets of lower reps every other day?  I've heard that both are successful, but I'm open to opinions.  At the moment I'm doing the alternating sets so that I can get in more exercises and a larger variety of muscle work within a shorter time frame. Otherwise I'm doing 800 exercises everyday, and I don't have that kind of time.

Thanks for the help, and sorry for the bare looking profile.  I'm still working on setting it up.  Sorry as well if these questions have been covered in the past.  I didn't have time to read all 13 pages of posts in detail.
