Diet / Fiber!

Hey everyone.

I've heard that fiber can keep you full for much longer than other foods, is that true?
Because i'm trying to lose some weight, and my problem is I get hungry really quickly and I tend to stuff myself at meals.
Another bad thing is my mom thinks i'm paranoid about losing weight, and she tries to cook foods with alot of butter and stuff. Any help with that?

Today i tried this: took a cup of quaker instant oatmeal, and put it in a glass. i added milk until the milk was slightly over the oatmeal, and i let that sit in the fridge for about 20 minutes. Then i added a spoon and a half of sugar, mixed it, and drank/ate it.
It didn't make me feel that full, is it because I didn't really cook it?
