Oh, I should have mentioned: I'm celebrating my 47th birthday by doing 4,700 pushups in a single day as a Wounded Warrior benefit:

I'm getting tired of people saying I'm too old for Parkour. Or even fitness in general. I'm only 34. Seesh people act like I'm 80.

Hey Alex! Thanks for your post. Take what they say in the spirit in which it was intended-- people are where they are. They say it out of love (and a bit of ignorance).  You have freedom over what you decide to do with your body.  I turn 47 next week, and I'll have been practicing Parkour for two years next month.  My wife rolls her eyes, but she's gotten used to my shenanigans by now and doesn't try to stop me anymore.

One thing I have discovered-- my tendons aren't what they used to be. I've had to really work on protection-- right landings, right rolls, etc.  And I've found a few activities in parkour that are less impactful.  Here is a video of me doing a parkour flow drill that I truly enjoy, but that lets my patellar tendons take a breather:

OK-I am a F/49. Overweight. Started a diet and for once, it is going well. I was training specifically with kettlbells and bodyweight for sport lifting after PT. Now, I am trying to transition. I find my body does better with two on/two off schedule. I am thinking about this to get back into shape:
Moderate Day: Body Weight.
Hard Day: QM, core work, landing, rolling and KB for conditioning.
No Day: Joint Mobility
Easy Day: Balance. Roll practice. Stretching.

Suggestions welcome.
I love it-- I think it's great that you're building in days for rolling and landing.  My PK injuries all stem from lack of ability rolling and landing.  This sounds like a really sensible plan.  Just one thing: make sure to add something fun in; I get bored and end up abandoning plans when they include no fun.

OK. So I am back and it has been a journey. Knee surgery, back injury and weight gain. Also felt that I really had no place in PK. I am now coming up on 50. My goal: to be more healthy than I have ever been. I want to have fun. Maybe no 10 ft. gap jumps at 20 feet. Possibly a 3 footer at 10:)
You absolutely have a place in parkour.  I do too; I'm 46 and have some knee issues.  It will mean something different to us than it does to the 19 year olds you see doing 10 foot drops.  It *is* about fun. And you and I have the wisdom to know what will be fun and what will be needlessly injurious.

By the way, the height up that you do a jump means nothing.  I've seen some really impressive jumps between two boards laying on the ground-- a height up about two inches.  The height of a jump is for show.

I ran my 46-miler on 6 November 2010 in 8h42m.  It was pretty damn good: http://bit.ly/dc46miler

Now I have a new challenge: 4700 pushups around the end of June 2011 to celebrate my 47th birthday.  I'm going to adapt my running schedule to this-- essentially, I'm going to do 100 pushups a day for every mile I run.  I normally run 6 miles a day, and have a long run on the weekends.  So I'll do 600 pushups a day during the week, and 2000 on one weekend day.

I'll have to work up to this, I think.  But tonight I did 100 pushups as a start.  Well, here goes.  ;D

Welcome!  Good to have a youngster here (I'm 46)  ;D. Funny, I try to work out with my 9 year old; he was 7 when I got started, and seems to come and go interest-wise.

You're right to focus in on drops as a source of injury; I have to be especially conscious of the fact that my knees aren't as supple as these 19 year olds I train with!

Now I'm older a bit pudgy around the middle and I think it's a great idea to get back into what I seemed to know instinctively.

The human body is amazingly adaptable. There's nothing I love better than to hear one of us older types (I'm 46) working to break down peoples' concepts of what we're capable of.  Good luck!

Yikes! I haven't been on the forum keeping track of my progress since August 25th, ay dios mio!
Bleh, I really let mine go, too, as I ramped up for my 46-mile run.  Now that's done, and I'll be getting back to parkour little by little; I'm doing some strength conditioning to give my body a little more protection before jumping back in.

I agree!  Training with others is key.  As an older guy, one piece of advice: really protect your patellar tendons-- the big tendons that run from your quads, around your kneecaps, and under your kneecaps.  It's so easy to get patellar tendinitis, and so hard to get rid of it.  There are some good exercises out there (I like http://www.triedandtruefitness.com/how-i-cured-my-patellar-tendonitis-in-14-days/410/).  Learn to land right, and don't rush.  Your muscles will get stronger faster than your tendons will.

As far as losing some weight, I like the book Racing Weight: How to Get Lean for Peak Performance by Matt Fitzgerald (http://amzn.com/1934030511).  It had some great advice for someone who is athletic but who wants to cut some weight to perform better.  Athletes don't respond to the same stuff as non-athletes.

Good luck!  You're going to have a blast! ;D

Looking good!  When are you going to put a nice 20 mile run in? ;D

Hey, I have a date for my 46 Miler-- 6 November 2010.  Check out the web page: http://bit.ly/dc46miler
Are you going to be back in the EE.UU then?

depends on what that person is going to do with it no one under 21 or over 50 should be jumping off of a building but really anybody can do parkour and start whenever it's all about your own physical limitations and strengths
Ahem; what's so special about being over 50?  That's just a few short years away for me. ;D

Wow, I haven't posted in a month!  But I haven't been inactive.  Far from it!  I've been training for the "Daddy's Crazy 46-Miler", which I will run on 6 November 2010: http://bit.ly/dc46miler

The big thing I've done in the last month has been to continue running, including a 30 miler yesterday and a 26 miler a week before that.

Once the 46 miler is done, I'll take a couple of weeks off to heal up, then start back into parkour hard core, starting with a boot camp at Primal Fitness here in DC.

Awesome video, youngster!  I loved seeing your daughter practicing alongside you; I have a nine year old son who has practiced with me in the past.  He passed through a phase where his interest flagged a little last year, but seems interested again.

Yahoo!  That's excellent!  I started doing successful monkey vaults and kongs so recently that it's still a big thrill when I land one correctly.  Congratulations! ;D

My name's Sebastian and I'll be turning 28 in a month. Yeah, I know this is for the over 30 crowd but if you could cut me a little slack, I'd be greatly obliged.  I'm crazy out of shape but am completely captivated by this.

Whippersnapper!

No, seriously, welcome.  We don't get as much action on this board as is, so I'm sure glad to see you.

Two things I've learned doing parkour as an older guy (I'm 46, started about 1.5 years ago):
1) My tendons got strong a lot slower than my muscles.  That is to say, I did damage to my tendons because I was so surprised at my muscular gains.  Really work on learning how to do landings very well before you try to do any real drops or even land from vaults.  Do some eccentric squat work to strengthen your patellar tendons.  You'll regret it if you don't strengthen them.
2) Repetition and consistency are key.  Don't be disappointed if you spend an entire practice session doing something very simple over and over.  Then next time, that move will be easier.  And one day it will be second nature.  Don't rush it, but *do* be consistent about working out.  The quickest way to get injured is to only work out once a week and then try to jam everything into the practice session.

Good luck! You're going to do great!

About 9 miles, mostly goof-around running.  I ran three miles with my dog, Sparky, and a mile with son, Daniel, then another five miles on my own.

Saturday, 18 September 2010
Easy 3 Mi w/Sparky. Nothing special; was just trying to keep my heart rate under 143. Notably, Sparky is really getting in better shape.

28 Miles Glover Park to Rockville and back. First three miles were with Sparky, and the last mile with Daniel. I felt great! I'm stairstepping my long run distance; next week should be 30 miles.

- Glover Park loop with Sparky 2.79 miles, 27 minutes, 09:44 pace
Glover Park loop with Sparky. Tried to keep my HR under 143, which was easy except when Sparky decided she wanted to run a zillion miles an hour uphill. My left calf is tight; this from a drill we did in fencing class on Saturday.

- 5 Mi Tempo Run. FEMA to Glover Park, 5 miles, 47 minutes, 09:22 pace
5 Mi Tempo Run. FEMA to Glover Park. 1st time tracking a tempo run by HR: 2 miles at 60-65% (131-138), 2 miles at 85-90% (167-175). Hard to get my heart rate up so high, which is encouraging because my heart is in great shape, but frustrating, because my legs have a lot of catching up to do.

- Easy 2.8 mile run with my dog, Sparky
2.8 Mi Glover Park Loop w/Sparky. I was surprisingly rested for the day after a relatively long run. We ran w/3 deer as well! Always a surprise.

- 4.77 mile recovery run
4.77 Mi FEMA to Glover Park. I'm trying out some techniques from John Parker's "Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot". So far so good; my easy runs are too hard and my hard runs are too easy. Progress ahead.
