Community and Club Leaders / Re: Teaching Tips? (Expert help desired)
« on: September 30, 2011, 05:44:55 PM »
I've been teaching a very successful program at a gymnastics school in Minnesota for over 2 years now and I have a ton of info and notes on how to teach classes and what work and what doesn't work.  I also have a 30 page document talking about teaching freerunning, breaking down how to teach basic skills, lists of beginning/intermediate/advanced skills, different philosophies, and a 12 week class syllabus.

I imagine this has probably changed/formalized a bit since opening the new gym.  Are you no longer interested in open sharing this information with other community members now that its your professional livelihood?

Hahaha @ "banks that gave out successful loans to open a parkour specific gym..."

you really have to have an in on that one man.  no matter how solid a business plan you think you've come  up with, in this economy nobody is going to give a stranger to their bank a loan to open a niche training facility based around discretionary income.

Insurance is easy to get once you know what you want to offer.  Call a broker.

Look up how similar models in our industry work-  mark2rock and ryanford use to be over here http://board.crossfit.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

sorry to sound like a dick but the reality of it isnt pretty.

you dont find enlightenment, without first being able to find your breath.

Its hard to teach that "mental understanding" without first having a grasp of that idea which you are trying to understand.  Basic technique cueing and repetition is a wicked accessible way for most (insert choice noun for new students here) to begin to even tickle the underlying forces and philosophies that make it a true discipline.

I like listening to the zen masters who coach a few times a week while jamming and philosophize from their cubicle computers put down dudes who work full time actually coaching and spreading that "mental understanding" every day. Its cute.  I know i coach about 800 classes a year which ends up being about 1000 hours just professionally in facilities, not including the local outdoor jams and classes. There are tons of guys here in the US, and this forum, who work as much if not more. Max, you should definitely count to ten, breathe for a moment, and then really consider the amount of live experience these guys have actually interacting with hundreds of (insert choice noun for new students here) before saying they are trying to sell your discipline.

without a wicked strong model you would probably end up just being an "employee" in that gymnastics or martial arts school...

Some are able to get their foot in the door with "workshops" and other one offs that allow for profit sharing type arrangements but chances are you'll probably end up with a wage unless youre bringing a whole lot to the table (equip/training/coaches/insurance/an established clientele/yadayadayada)

Yeah thats what stalls most of us. Finding an awesome place to build and go nuts= easy.  Finding a spot that is commercially zoned and awesome=Harder.  Dealing with special use permits and variances for changing the zoning=$$$$$+frustration.

I wish you luck, but ive heard that zoning stuff with the city for making an awesome "Light industrial" spot legal is damn near impossible or impossibly expensive.  Check out some of the old crossfit.com boards for "starting an running a facility"- lots of zoning stories and advice.

Here we must have 1 parking space per 100sqft of facility space to stay legal.

California might be different though.  Its hard to find any legal commercially zoned properties that work for under $.75-1.00 a square foot out here.  Getting permits can go another $20K to get the use permits here too.

But keep pushing dude and dont let the man/zoning s.o.b's get you down.

Community and Club Leaders / Re: Leaders Unite - University Parkour
« on: June 19, 2011, 10:00:22 AM »
Dude, you should probably talk to people who have already done it.  Joe Torchia and Nick Kelly in Ohio started an "official" school recognized club at Ohio State University almost 4 years ago.  Its been done so go ask how and try to recreate their success.

No need to reinvent the wheel.

I would also try getting help from these guys or other "leaders" in the game directly.  No big call outs for help and a union of collaboration, just make a phone call or look up an email.  You will definitely get more real usable help that way.

We will be using the Parkour Connections Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/PK_connections) for updates on the smaller jam locations on friday (times, whos leading, where to meet) and also for announcing changes or other events during the Jam weekend. I would get on it.

8
head to the PK Loft to meet up, get info packet/register, and then one of the local leaders will start taking groups out to local spots for small sessions as people start coming in.

the full schedule (with detailed directions and meeting times) is going to be posted in the next two days.

What Kyle also failed mention is that he is using a well established community leader and School teacher as his "advisor" for the club.

This is why they will succeed.  Get good partners or support and it will make things much easier.  Find a outdoor community leader in good standing or convince a teacher at your school to get excited about parkour and youre in like flynn.

The PKGens guys at ADAPT today mentioned that Finland Parkour Association has an online database for exchanging/stealing awesome lesson plans from the better coaches in the community.  We need this.  Free.

General Fitness / Re: Beneficial to take Protein Shakes?

if taken immediately after a workout, i have found it to help fight the DOMS on more intense sessions.

definitely not a replacement for the regular sources of protein(food) though.

Movement / Re: Kong Landing
« on: May 25, 2011, 05:06:52 PM »
if you have a lot of forward momentum with little downward drop you can usually flow back to a smooth run by kicking a little behind with the first foot into that split foot landing.

However, any significant amount of downward force or drop will "shear" your knee right off using this technique, so its kinda specific to the situation.

Monkey is usually considered a gymnastic "squat on"

Kong is a "pass".

Community and Club Leaders / Re: So you want to open a gym?

I checked out the mission a goals of the Rochester Parkour gym and was wicked stoked.  It sounded like the dream most of us go for when trying to form that community hub.  But I also saw the blog post where the gym might not make rent in the months to come due to lack of the necessary start up funds.  I think the model you are trying to create is admirable to say the least but it is also a very bold move.  I also felt that your post was trying to negate the, IMO, very accurate scenario that Chad was presenting.  PkVisions was started with about the same amount of cash flow that you mentioned so we know it can be done,  but that kind of business plan is likely to be scoffed at by any loan officer or business major.  Number one reason for start ups of any kind failing is the lack of proper start up capital,  so to encourage it just goes against what I've been taught since day one.   Didn't mean to offend you personally cause it is even harder for you in your situation ( even more stress and sacrifice), but that the idea presented is very unsafe/risky business.  Like I have mentioned in other forums I am wicked stoked that you guys exist and had the cajones to even try,  but I think the purpose of this thread was to present what it takes to make a successful business plan and attempt to figure out actual ongoing operating costs and get a loan from somebody other than a benefactor or "lucking out".

I'm a very blunt guy definitely to a fault.  But I'm honest.  You guys are trying to something wicked awesome and hold you in high regard and I whole heartedly apologize of you felt I was attacking you, your commitment to your community, or your goals.

I think it is irresponsible to even suggest you could start a successful/sustaining gym of any kind for <$6000.  Definitely not going to be legal.  That wouldnt cover two months of operation even if you totally negated any start up costs.  But good luck dudes.

Chads estimates seem right on par. Try your hardest to find a commercially zoned facility if you are worried about start up costs.  Variances and Occupancy permits alone can run several thousand dollars just to the local govt before you even deal with installing what is required and getting it inspected.  The Light Industrial cheap rent is usually just not worth it.

As far as insurance, Nexo is pretty good and relatively cheap ive heard.  They also fight hard for their clients when sued (CFM got sued for a parkour related injury before i started working there but i watch the suit unfold over the first 1.5 years i was there.  We won.)  It would be cool if an organization (PKVisions, APK, APEX) could set up a RRG like what the Crossfit Community has.

But yeah it is alot of liability to take on (aka $$ and time) to have it only ever barely break even.  Otherwise it might be easier to rent a livework loft somewhere cheap and call it a "CLUBHOUSE" on the down low.

Thanks for stepping up and explaining what it really takes to make a dream like this work in the real world= Sacrifice.

Open housing spots are filled until we get more local volunteers.

Here are some good local hostels if you are interested though

Adelaidehostel.com - downtown hostel union squareish

Greentortoise.com - downtown north beachish - super good food and strip clubs

Dakota Hotel - hostel but called a hotel?  its downtown union squareish no website of their own but you can book on hostels.com or call them

These are the only ones i have been to and can personally vouch for. They are all pretty cheap and centrally located for BART/MUNI access.

Parking will be a bitch though.

IF more spots open up I will let you guys know.  See you in two weeks!!!

You talk like you want to be big help with the local scenes and that you eventually want to LEAD others.

Do you know that we have potentially 400+ traceurs (and Leaders :)!  ) coming to visit less than 30 min from you for the International Jam in a month??

We have asked for help and assistance organizing from all the local "Community Leaders", and you have chosen not been one of them. Thats not how you "build leadership and management skills".

It just seems that you are in in fact totally ignorant of the large striving community around you...

Think i'm a dick?  Its simple prove me wrong and get involved.  Otherwise people laugh about how you are the organizer of this Forum.   Because its funny.

Yes it definitely helps to be a PART of a community if you want to try leading your own.

The monthly jam with about 50 people was 15 min from you this weekend where were you?  How are you mod of this forum and nobody around where you live has ever met or heard pf you??

You need to get back out there bro.

I think that the video competitions that have been going on online lately are a basic version of this.

You give it a certain amount of stars and then they get placed.

Maybe more fields with star ratings?    just 3-5 basic criteria that you could rate stars for in 3 seconds based on that initial feeling and impression.

That eliminates the 13 year old i learned parkour playing assassins creed hater comments and PK vs FR crap in the reviews.
I'm going to participate both immediately and then on any revisions and suggestions on what people believe to be a more helpful review format.

haha i dont know why but that made me laugh.

Well, here's the thing with that. APK does not allow posts for paid products or services. If we did, this place could potentially turn into nothing more than an ad farm. Believe me, I delete far more than any one person should have to know about.

Second, in fairness to APK, were are a business and we need to eat too, so things like advertising for a service that someone else is making money from is something that we should also make money from. That's fair.

So, you will see NEWS Like a new gym opening, but not posts about services, etc.  For example, I have no removed Chad's post about his new gym because that is new, but he will not be able to make ongoing posts advertising his classes, unless he pays for advertising on APK.  Of course APK academies have the privilege of posting info, etc because they are actually a part of APK, so they are entitled to the value of reaching our members.

Hope that all makes sense and sounds fair to everyone.

Bummer.^
