General Discussions (Competition) / Re: Competition in Parkour
« on: October 27, 2012, 07:22:09 PM »
While I am more on the part of participating in Parkour and Freer Running while "jamming" with my friends, I do find competitions to be very fun as long as they are done the right way, and for me that's...

•With friends and local Traceurs, not some gigantic event.
•Absolutely NO money, companies, or sponsorship whatsoever.
•For me, not judged on who's style is better, but who is unique, adapts to the environment well, and flow and fluidity.

And, it's all for fun and the passion.  :)

EDIT: Oh, and I mean competition for the Free Running side of Parkour, not actual Parkour itself for competition.

This isn't the appropriate place to start a thread like this.

Parkour And Freerunning / Re: Torn hands on steel bars
« on: August 31, 2012, 07:40:02 PM »
This may be considered cheating, but whenever I go to train on steel bars I do one of two things. I bought a pair of extremely thin gloves that are slightly slippery, and while they are grippy, they're perfect for bars. Additionally, I've used a very small amount of baby powder on the skin. Not a handful, but a very small amount, just so my hands don't feel heat and tension when swinging or going on bars.

Pics & Vids / Tricknetics - The Webster & Front Flip
« on: August 31, 2012, 07:35:42 PM »
So, over the last few weeks of summer until school starts and I can finally start jamming with my friends during lunch, I took it upon myself to go at it everyday and land both the standing webster and the running front flip without fail While this isn't my best work, it's the best I got on my camera. My front flip was a bit weak on rotation and landing and my webster was a tad bit weak on rotation, but it's good enough for a video. Thoughts are always welcome. Next week is the backflip and the J-Step Gainer. :)

Parkour And Freerunning / Re: Did you train today? where and what.
« on: August 18, 2012, 09:43:14 PM »
Trained at my local high school today. There's a lot of places to do flips, vaults, precisions, and gainers. And the grass is SO soft, so rolling feels like rolling on a mattress.

what are your thoughts on training with music?

IMHO, music is what keeps me going forever in Parkour and free running. I can do it forever with the right music pumping through my ears. Additionally, I always seem to perform my best when the bass drops. :)

His technique, smoothness, and flow is absolutely excellent. I live in Washougal, WA. Maybe we could have a jam sometime.

Ya, it kind of just takes practice to get used to focusing on the height. It's easy to think just go higher, but it took me forever before I was actually going any higher. Still needs work too. And I suggest just rolling after the landing if you get too much momentum to not fall over.

Agreed. After practicing the last two days, I improved everything. It's working perfectly. It's all about controlling your speed, height, momentum, and landing.

Well, it seems like after another day of practice I'm starting to stick the landing, and standing with my knees slightly bent. I jumped a little higher and kicked a little harder, while letting out of my tuck the same time, and it's working perfectly. Now, I just have to work on not falling over after landing.

Pics & Vids / Running Webster - Progressions - Suggestions?
« on: August 13, 2012, 08:14:47 PM »
So, I've just recently started practicing this, and it's been hit and miss for me. While I can get a running webster landed (as seen in the video), I land way too far to the ground which in turn isn't healthy for my knees. Anyway, what I think I'm doing wrong is either one of two things, or more than likely both. As I run up to the object, I need to jump higher to gain more momentum and maybe rotate a little more. Additionally, I need to tuck a little longer and release a little less soon. Suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

Pics & Vids / Re: Slow Motion Anyone?
« on: August 08, 2012, 08:31:15 PM »
I'm using the GoPro HD Hero 2 with the settings 720p 60fps, which makes for some pretty good slow motion. You can get up to 120fps out of the GoPro, but the quality's down to only 480p, so i usually don't.

Ah, a camera I've been looking to invest in for quite a while. Quick question though, what are you using to edit your movies? I'm using iMovie, but if there's something that lets you edit the slow motion precisely, let me know.

Being in a good position to roll is not about being lower to the ground it is about being slightly over rotated having the control to tuck fast and open up is important whether you want to to stick the landing, step out or roll. Tucking the knee's to the side of the body instead of against the chest allows a faster spin not a slower spin in gymnastics its called cowboying and you will see almost nobody who can do a triple back without a cowboy.

As far as your front flip your not setting effectively your jumping up and coming down into your take off which results in less of rebounding action then keeping the hip height as level as possible(in the case of going up on to an object the hip height just before the feet hit should not be any higher then the hip height just before your take off). .

You are also trying to look over your right shoulder as you tuck don't do this especially not before going into a roll. Your roll needs a ton of work you are rolling straight down your spine as you come up have and the have the wrong leg extended this is good roll tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JoBLxFKkbM

Rafe,

Thanks for the tips. And yes, I do know that my roll was completely off. I'm just experimenting with different attributes and my personal front flip that suits me best. I'm still just getting into the freerunning side of parkour and while I know how to do a roll, it's not very good after doing a front flip or webster prior to the roll

We ridicule for a reason, we dont want you to go out there doing what ever you want and getting hurt. Even if there were a 16 and under area, i would post in it just the same as i post in any other area.

I understand that. I think as long as you're being safe and mindful of your own body and other peoples property, you'll be fine. As long as you follow the right progressions, and don'y overtrain. I've had my fair share of accidents while being a traceur, and it wasn't exactly the most fun time of my life.

What's the FPS on that camera, and what model at that?

First off, nice frontflip.

I prefer to tuck fast so I can land straight up.

Yes, I do that when I'm landing on concrete, as rolling isn't the most enjoyable experience on hard surfaces.

is it to late to start if your 15..iv been doing it for about 3 months now, but it is hard to practice because i live in the country>>

I live in the country too, and your age is the perfect starting point, just remember to condition and practice everyday. Since you live in the country, try and find some rocks, trees, or very soft grass to practice on, as well as dirt mounds and hills.

Anyone else here in Washougal or close by that's interested in Parkour or has been doing so for a little while now? Let me know, I'm part of a group called Tricknetics based in Washougal near WHS.

You'll see what I'm talking about after watching the video. What are your favorite styles. Faster rotation so you can land straight up, or slower rotation so you can land lower and go into a roll?
