Parkour And Freerunning / Re: Advice for large shoes
« on: January 27, 2013, 01:08:34 PM »
I know your feel. I look at all of those tabi shoes (which I run best in) but alas can't fit into a single pair of their largest sizes for Air Rifts, etc. Try http://www.shop.puma.com/Voltaic-III-NM-Running-Shoes/pna186034,en_US,pd.html&q=volt#!i%3D10%26color%3D13%26size%3DUS_4

Comfortable, flexible, and is in your size. I wear these, still in good shape. My only gripe is that the grip loses its.. gripiness after a couple of months.

Training Journals / Mercury's Log
« on: November 24, 2012, 07:33:46 PM »
Hey y'all!  I see you've started logging your goals into the site.
I've been training since November of last year, stopped in May, and picked up again in mid November. Well, it's amazing how much you forget in six months. I've learned to roll now (struggle last year), and am sprinting and climbing much better thanks to an O-Blood type based diet. Here are my goals...

-Climb the 10 foot wall on the abandoned building I live near.
-Climb poles with much better ease (foot placement problem).
-...that's it. I'll add more to my log as I update it.

I'll be updating this log as motivation to keep going, and keep track of my progress. I start tomorrow.

Parkour And Freerunning / Re: What makes American Parkour special?

I don't quite know what method you'd call it, but me and my friends map out courses, mark them with red tape (Mirror's Edge, anyone?) and follow the obstacles marked with red tape until we can't go anymore. We all film the others' technique, and then mark the spots they don't succeed in with a blue tape, so they can practice those parts especially. Once their technique is corrected, we remove the blue tape. Our goal is to run the entire course by sundown without any blue tape in the course.

Don't worry, we take the tape off (after being confronted by a cop for accidentally leaving it on) before we go.  ;)

Me, Ser, and Robert train here often. Where do y'all train at?

We (Nova PK) thought we were the only ones! We mostly just did sprints and worked our way into rolls, and up onto walls, etc. Down and over. Where do you train?

I once had a pair of Adidas Sambas custom made. Sure, they're just made for show, but they still did an excellent job with me. Fairly grippy, nice sole. If you're into a less interesting option (looking at the attention grabbing VFFs), then these should be okay.

Consumer Whores / What are the best shoes for large feet?

Lon story short, puberty was a bitch and I went from a size 13 to a size 16 in less than a year and a half.

What's the best set of parkour shoes that you are aware of that go to about a size 15 or 16?

I can't explain why, but I used to hate dubstep. Now that I've heard it on Pandora on my Droid while climbing and doing drills, I kind of love it now. It's just pure, filthy energy. I like it :)

How are these? I'm a VFF guy but I love that everyone is getting into barefoot. Is the heel equal to the toe?

These are Skele Toes... sole of Nike Free, and four toes. Running barefoot in these is a dream. And you get some of the feel and comfort you got wearing sneakers, too...

I had an older pair of skeletoes last year. They were crap. Those look purty though...

These ones are more flexible and sturdier.. So much better than my old 2.0's  ;)

I was the playing Mirror's Edge...  ;D that's how I found out about it.
Well, actually, Dad walked in on me playing the game and said, "Is she doing Parkour?" I asked what that was. Turns out, he used to do this kind of stuff all the time through high school in big cities before David Belle came along. He taught me a few tic-tac and roll moves and I went from there (it's been too long, Dad's too out of shape to train for a while :( )

Later I met my buddy Cer, who was just getting started, too. From there, he perfected my roll, taught me how to climb dumpsters/walls, and so I taught him combat/sparring drills and a few weapon dissarms, and how to bust open doors. I've actually found basing your drills and moves off of Mirror's Edge gives it a sense of familiarity (we both play the game together a lot) and a sense of what needs practice.

You wouldn't expect it in a state like Kansas, but I saw some people jumping passing bags on the rooftops in the North District of town. Also, some people just doing flips in front of the Barnes and Noble.

Thanks! Interesting video. But I can't believe they chose John McDougall to do the study.   ???

Looks like the link is invalid! I'd be happy to watch it, just use the "SHARE" URL instead of the page itself. Or if you used the "SHARE" URL, try vice versa (the page's URL)

Parkour And Freerunning / Re: So Called "Runner Vision"
« on: March 20, 2012, 05:37:53 PM »
Haha, just got back from a week long vacation to see a bunch of responses to my thread. Being in a place without internet and/or cellular signal does things to your mind...

It's interesting seeing different variations and names of this so called "Sight" (based by popular name). I think I'd prefer to call it "Runner Vision", based on my fanboyism of Mirror's Edge, but you do whatever. From time to time, your routes become too complex to even work with. My buddy, Cerebus (yes, that's really his name), once pointed out that I should train my vision. "You are taking the long way around. I know that using your runner vision is good, and absolutely perfect for finding your way out of sticky situations, but PKRunning (we use a mix of parkour AND freerunning in our technique of getting from point a to b) is to take the fastest, safest way out while being creative. Don't just take that fence, when there's a door right there." And, of course, he was right. Imbetween the fences I hopped was an open gate. After a while, I got the vision trained to the point where it doesn't overwhelm me, and I use it as efficiently as possible. I guess it just takes time.

I know what you mean, I remember when I first started developing it years ago in middle/high-school, it was like the world opened up and literally became a playground in front of my eyes.
And I have noticed that the more you progress the better it becomes, as I have been doing better and progressing more lately than I have in previous years. As such I see things far easier & more quickly now, I also see more things off of previous things I have found. And the more difficult things which I have seen, and I always "blacked out," now seem plausible. (I think that made sense...do any of these...things make sense to you guys?)

Also a new person joined our local group and started Parkour for the first time today, I was trying to explain it to him, and he sort of understood, but it will be interesting to ask him what he sees in the coming weeks/months.

Small-er community here. Small Kansan city, what did you expect  :P But seriously. I asked one of my not-so-close friends at school to join me for a day of parkour around the next city. Maybe a week later, after practicing a bit more on his own, he kept saying how everything began to look like a playground to him. Instead of dozing off or perhaps playing on his phone, he kept looking around and seeing what he could do in the place he was. Usually the gym, like me :)

Parkour And Freerunning / So Called "Runner Vision"

Okay, I'm just going to make a quick post like this to as a poll or something rather-kindof-sortof... to the point. Ever since I was a little Newbie, I spent most of my time checking out new buildings/roof tops and seeing what I could do. I'll spend most of my time in a car/on a bus looking at buildings and formulating escape plans/ building paths I could take to get from destination from destination. Kind of like the red Runner Vision in Mirror's Edge. I just see things plain and simple at first, and moments later the things I can climb and use to get higher just pop out and become more clear than everything else.

IRL Situation: I was out at the Petsmart pet store when I was looking at these huge shelves in the back of the store, next to the storage/maintenance areas. These large shelves held vast amounts of dog houses, 'dogloos,' pet food, etc. And rather than shopping as I was supposed to, I actually ended up spending maybe 5-10 minutes just looking at ways to vault these things, climb shelves, swinging on the burline rafters, and so on.

EDIT:

EXACTLY like this.

I just now remembered that I posted this as a thingie for other traceurs to respond to. Do you ever find yourself using this so called Runner Vision to train/ find routes for running? Please let me know, just want to use this to learn about how other people see things while training.

When you've been written up at school for doing wallruns and rolling off the bleachers in the gymnasium (they're high ones).

When you've "cheated" during PE Games by doing wallruns and getting into high places to dodge/throw balls. They've actually made rules after me  ;D
