Diet / Pre-workout for a swimmer?
« on: July 19, 2011, 12:04:04 PM »
What would you guys suggest a swimmer like myself eats before practice? We usually swim 4000m-5500m and I need something to put in my system that won't make me feel sick, but will keep my energy up. Lately I've just been eating Clif Bars, Bananas, and water, however, these don't seem like the smartest choices. Suggestions?

Parkour And Freerunning / Making a choice between two sports.
« on: March 04, 2011, 01:49:28 PM »
I love Parkour, it's really the first activity I felt comfortable in after trying football, basketball, baseball, etc. and I've been hooked for almost 2 years now. But now I'm swimming and honestly I think I like it just as much as Parkour, which is where my dilemma is. I know I'll never be a member of The Tribe or be sponsored by Urban Freeflow in a million years, but with swimming (and I don't want this to sound like I'm bragging) I'm actually good at it. I'm coming close to breaking a minuet in my 100 breaststroke and I'm swimming 26 seconds in the 50 freestyle and this is only my first year of doing it. I know there are a ton of swimmers much better than me and its a slim chance I'll ever make the Olympic or World Championship time trials, but I think if I dedicate a lot of time to my club team and my varsity highschool team and in college later on there's a possibility I could make it. So I guess I'm going to have to make a choice on whether I want to dedicate all my time to swimming and chase after my goals in that or do both and still be able to do Parkour, but kinda give up on my goals in swimming.

So to not just make this a blog, I guess I'll ask you guys what you think about this, and if anyone has a similar experience, what choice did you make?

General Fitness / Muscular imbalances in legs.
« on: February 15, 2011, 07:26:44 PM »
My left leg is unusually stronger than my right, I think this just comes from using it to explode off the block in swimming so much. I can do 3 unassisted pistols with my left and zero on my right, what is something I can do combat this? Regular squats are not an option right now because my hip flexors and lower back aren't flexible enough to keep my back straight (which thoroughly annoys the heck out of me.)

I was thinking maybe weighted split squats or band assisted pistols?

General Fitness / Conditioning without being fully recovered.
« on: February 10, 2011, 07:46:11 PM »
Just a quick question, I just started conditioning again this week after about 5 months of just swimming everyday and I'm fairly sore. My routine is bodyweight and gymnastic exercises because my gym membership expired, its pretty much is

Pulling: Tucked front lever
           Pullups

Pushing: Frog Planche progression
            Dips
            HeSPU

Legs: Pistols
        NLC's

My question is even though I condition Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday I'm still sore after my rest days and even though I'm sure I'll stop being so sore after a while should I take extra rest days if I'm still sore or just work through it because I'm not putting out 100% non my workouts i.e. instead of my usual hold on tucked front lever for 22 sec. I'm only holding it for 15 sec. Will working through the soreness have a positive or negative affect?

It's cold outside, around -2 degrees with windchill... so I thought I'd go train  :)

This is just a short video that contains a little of what I did pretty close to my house. Nothing big just some vaults.

It's 0 degrees in Texas right now so I decided to film a little bit of what I did today and make a video. It's my first video I've ever made and I was operating in cramped quarters so yeah  ;)

Injuries - Discussion / I'm 15 but I feel like I'm 70
« on: December 04, 2010, 04:14:47 PM »
I have painful pressure in the sides of my knees when I sit back on my heels, I just hurt my lower back (hip flexor it feels like) while jumping today, I can't reach the middle of my shins, and I feel like I'm constantly getting hurt whenever I do something that's not swimming. I mean what's wrong with me? Genetics?

Injuries - Discussion / Left shoulder pain.
« on: October 25, 2010, 05:31:59 PM »
I'm pretty sure this is from doing 2x a day practices for swimming. It feels like a tendon running from my shoulder into my bicep is inflamed because everytime I pull water it sends a sharp pain into the front left side of my shoulder and the tendon becomes swollen. What can I do to combat this other than rest (fish oil? ice?)

Socialize / Any swimmers here? Ever swam the 1650m free?
« on: July 23, 2010, 06:06:04 AM »
My coach really wants me to do this event, but I'm not so sure about it. Just wondering if anyone has ever swam this and if so, what was your plan of action/time? It helps me to get different ideas to see if one works better for me.

(Yeah I know this is a Parkour forum, but no one ever answers on SwimFit forums)

General Fitness / How to fix rounding the back?
« on: June 11, 2010, 09:23:10 AM »
So now that my knees feel better I'm starting to work on my form for lifting 3x5's 2x a week and I have noticed that my lower back rounds when I go down into a squat. Is this just a matter of stretching my hamstrings and hip flexors or is there something else I can add on to stretching (i.e. foam rolling?)

Diet / What to eat before and in between high intensity activity?
« on: June 09, 2010, 05:56:34 AM »
Everybody knows the old "carb up" strategy for swimming, but I was wondering if this is actually a good idea? Should I be eating a load of pasta the night before a meet or should I stay with a balanced meal? Also, I want to have more variety in the foods I eat in between races other than bananas, could you guys suggest some foods that won't fill me up but will give me the energy to race, thanks.

Injuries - Discussion / What is Wrong With My Immune System?
« on: June 05, 2010, 05:00:23 AM »
Until December last year I never got sick, but since December I've had all kinds of sinus infections, bronchites, colds, and fevers. I have no idea why my immune system is so weak, can anybody help me out?

General Fitness / Pull downs, positive and the negative?
« on: April 08, 2010, 07:20:52 PM »
So I've started doing pull downs again after i do my pullups with a 20 lb assist (little contraption i made to give me some assist on my Iron Gym) because I'm looking to train for hypertrophy for swimming this year, and I was wondering what the negatives were to pulldowns? It seems like it mimics the pulling motion of a pullup pretty well, with the exception that  your pulling the weight down instead of pulling yourself up. Is that the only difference or is there a difference in the muscles worked? Could doing pulldowns below my nips be helpful to my goal of 10 pullups to the nips or below?

Being as swimming is coming up this summer, I would really like to be a little more toned then I am now. I'm thinking of doing a bodybuilding type program, but adding in pullups, OP, chinups, dips, etc. on certain muscle group days and swimming (HIIT) 5-6 days out of the week. My question to you guys is do you think this is the best route to go?

In the Media / Brink Cinematic with a heck of a lot of PK

I've been injured for a year and a half now, haven't done Parkour for that duration of time, nor have I done any kind of lower body conditioning (unless you count rehab) and I've got to admit that i'm deteriorating. Recently my knees have been feeling terribly painful, and today while doing rehab they mead the most god awful sound which sounded like a cross between cracking and squishing. I didn't know if I wanted to punch a hole through the wall or just break down because it feels like all my hard work is doing nothing. I'm sick and tired of being injured, and my doctor gave me the news that this could last until college.. if that happens I don't know what I'll do. So I'm asking anyone out there how you guys cope with being injured?
