It's been a long time. If you're within driving distance to Bloomsburg, PA, you are VERY welcome to join Columbia County Parkour for our first training session of 2013. The session is completely free.

Please RSVP to the linked event :)

I have been practicing parkour since 2005, and teaching in group settings since 2009. I have been A.D.A.P.T certified since August 2011, and got to learn coaching tips from some of the world authorities in parkour.

Our meeting begins at 1PM, and will continue until about 4pm. Afterwards, those who are interested are invited to join us for a food adventure in downtown Bloomsburg. From there, we disperse.

To those who will be going, I look forward to meeting you!
-John

Here are a few things that I've learned over the years about talking to people about parkour and freerunning.

I hope you all find something that will make explaining the discipline a little easier.

I watched Happy Feet Two for the first time last night. I heard absolutely nothing about the movie before, so I was absolutely blown away when I found this little gem.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeE1fLd94Dk

Earlier in the movie while the group was confronting a bully elephant seal, little Boadecia drops this quote, "My mother says there are no obstacles, only opportunities!" I want to meed these writers.

I find this scene very touching. I feel that it represents what any one of us would do if there were others in need.

She just released it! This is part of her doctoral dissertation. This is the first dissertation of its kind, and will become the first truly legitimate academic resource to find information about Parkour.

In the Media / Parkour featured in "Life in a Day" film project - Youtube
« on: January 27, 2011, 01:13:04 PM »
On July 24th, 2010, thousands of people from all over the world filmed their daily lives. The content ranged from the mundane to the extreme.

This project is called "Life in a Day" - It is hosted by YouTube in partnership with Hollywood directors Ridley Scott, and Kevin MacDonald, and film editor Joe Walker.

More than 4,500 hours of film from 140 nations was submitted to this project, and the Life in a Day team edited it into a 90-minute documentary that will be streamed live on YouTube today from the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It will be streamed on Life in a Day's official YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/lifeinaday. The streaming will begin at 8PM Eastern Standard Time.

Fifteen films were chosen as "finalists", and their videographers were invited to Utah to attend the festival. Two Traceurs from Russia, Alexander and Renat, were chosen as finalists. Their "Meet The Filmmakers" segment can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwhqNaWCOcc.

Congratulations to both of them!

Pennsylvania / Parkour Classes in Bloomsburg
« on: January 14, 2011, 10:45:18 PM »
Hello, fellow Pennsylvanians!

I've been negotiating with the owner of the Bloomsburg Sports Plex for quite some time now about getting classes started up. We have finally struck a deal!
I finagled the owner into allowing us a 2 hour time slot on Sundays from 11AM-1PM.

The Bloomsburg Sports Plex has a very well-equipped gymnastics section. Complete with a tumble track, rod floor, spring floor, a high-spring trampoline, and two foam pits to name the least. I got a time-slot with zero conflicting groups, so we will have the entire gym to ourselves. Screenshot here: http://www.scorpionsgymnastics.com/

This is going to be a structured class that will benefit both beginners as well as the more experienced.

Here is the complete description of the class:

What: Structured Parkour classes
Where: The Bloomsburg Sports Plex (on Rt. 11 near bloomsburg. Turn in at the stop light next to the Sheetz. The Sports Plex is next to the hardware store on the right.)
Address: 2627 Columbia Blvd Bloomsburg, PA 17815-8831
When: Every Sunday from 11AM to 1PM starting February 6th.
Price: $10 per person for a two-hour class (with plenty of free time at the end).

You may attend your first class free of charge to decide if it is a good fit for you!

This class will be completely separate from the outside community in Bloomsburg, which will always be free (except for the occasional seminar).

Injuries - Discussion / Acute pain at the patellar tendon
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:07:13 PM »
For about a month now, I have had some sort of weakness in my patellar tendon where it is attached to the tibia. I literally just woke up one day and noticed it was mildly inflamed and mildly painful to the touch (at the tibia). I am not certain what caused this.

The pain is acute. I can walk normally with zero pain. I can squat with a very small amount of pain. Running is painless as well. I only feel the effects of my activity at the end of the day. Whenever I have a somewhat physically active day, the area feels aggravated at night. I have had no previous injury in that knee. Some nights I feel no aggravation at all.

I always feel a mild discomfort when I massage it.

The symptoms have not gotten any better or any worse over the past month.

Overall pain scale... 1 out of 5 (Where 5 hurts worst *super frown*)

Possible Cause:
The only thing I have been doing differently is rolling correctly. I changed my roll technique about three weeks before the pain in my knee began. I did a test roll today and found that my knee's point of contact on the ground at the end of the roll is EXACTLY where the aggravation is.

My Questions:
Is running okay? I have no pain while running. The aggravation happens at night and into the morning.

Is stretching advised? I stretch at night. I noticed that stretching the area results in some mild aggravation the next morning.

What can I do to rehab it? This is assuming that it is only a weakness/small tear.

What can I do to rehab it? Assuming this time that it actually is the overuse injury that I fear.

What is the safest thing I can do? I don't know for sure what the problem is.

RICE?

I will be seeing a doctor over holiday break.

Shortly, I'm going to be advertising my "new" community to a wider area. I've learned a lot (thanks to Adam McC!) and I feel I'm ready to go public. Keep an eye out for Columbia County Parkour y'all!

However, the true motivation for this topic is a little piece of accidental poetry I dreamed up today while thinking about how some people are so quick to judge things. You can read it as poetry or as a paragraph, whichever you prefer.

If you insist on saying such things,
then please humor me a moment.

Imagine your favorite past-time;

a discipline you have been practicing for years
and to which you have dedicated your life.
This could be a martial art, a sport,
or your local sewing circle.
I care not.

Now imagine somebody standing in your face
and saying that it is worthless;
that is has no meaning.

The discipline for which you have developed a deep and personal philosophy
has just been defiled, belittled, and mindlessly cast aside for naught.

How does that make you feel?

Critique if you feel like it. I welcome all comments.

Training Journals / JG's Training Log (Comments Welcome)
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:17:49 PM »
Hey all! I was inspired by these training logs! I enjoyed paging through some of them and watching years of progress fly by in a few clicks. I enjoyed it so much I am going to start my own!

I've had 5 years of mental training in Parkour. But when I take into account the actual physical training, that number dwindles down to about 2 years. I plan to change that.

I'm a busy student with $%^t tons of responsibilities, so I'm going to keep my daily workout routines simple and short. And I'll do them when I am able to, which is the night.

10/14/2010

Push-up position plank - 2m30s
Squat position - 2m00s
Last 6 Inches - 2m00s

A nice core workout to start off my log!

Pennsylvania / Bloomsburg Area Parkour Community
« on: September 19, 2010, 08:06:14 PM »
Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania is a town in Columbia County.

This is a brand new Parkour community and I am giving a shout-out to everyone in the area that we exist!

Please join our Facebook group "Bloomsburg University Parkour and Free Running". That will be my primary mean of keeping everybody informed about meetups, jams, and seminars. This thread will be my secondary mode of communication.

I look forward to training with all of you!
