Pics & Vids / Some climbing pics
« on: January 11, 2012, 06:53:35 PM »
Just climbing around in my Vibrams front of the house so my wife could take some pics.

Not even sure how I cut my leg; probably on the tree.

Consumer Whores / Trying new shoes
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:03:57 PM »
I just picked up a new pair of shoes that I'll try out for the winter: Ozark Trail trail shoes. They're just sneakers but the soles looked good: mostly flat with some good traction. And they're not too heavy, with moderate cushioning. For $14 they're probably disintegrating crap but I figure why not.

I'll post again after using them a bit...

Pics & Vids / Fall conditioning
« on: October 03, 2011, 04:44:37 PM »
So, it's that time of year again, when I go into lumberjack mode. I spend the next six months or so weight training in the forest around the house. This afternoon I cut, carried, chopped and stacked about half a cord of firewood.

Starting out with smaller trees; those short logs were maybe 50lbs each and the longer one was probably a bit more than that. I only weigh one-thirty myself. I've got my eye on a nice big tree to take down this weekend.

Pics & Vids / Backyard parkour equipment

I built a few pieces of equipment from scrap lumber around the house, then my son and I spent a few minutes trying it out.

General Fitness / Asymmetry in the body
« on: July 14, 2011, 07:47:01 PM »
There is something that has been bothering me for quite some time. My body is not quite balanced, favoring the left side. I am rather skinny (5'10", 130#) and it's quite obvious that the muscles on the left side are bigger than my right - like, for example, biceps. My pecs also appear this way. Not just the muscles; hair grows in more fully on the left side of my face, and I even, uhh...have a pronounced 'lean to the left' if you go below the belt. Now, I am right-handed, and I came to a tentative conclusion that the primary side (my right) is more nimble and dextrous, whereas the offside (my left) is built more for strength. While I worked moving furniture and appliances, I called my left arm my load-bearing arm (or the "bitch arm" as my co-worker put it) and would finesse the object with my right.

Any thoughts on this?

Consumer Whores / Water shoes
« on: July 02, 2011, 04:47:04 PM »
Has anyone tried wearing water shoes for parkour/freerunning? Something like these seem to be very minimal with flat soles (a bit of tread for dispersing water and dirt, perhaps) and should be very lightweight. I saw some generic ones on sale at a local drugstore, something like $8/2-for-$12 and figured picking up a pair or two wouldn't hurt. Once I do and give them a try I'll do a bit of a write-up.

Injuries - Discussion / Lower abdomen strain
« on: April 07, 2011, 03:28:36 PM »
Well, a few weeks ago I was doing jumps off of a railing at home (not precisions since there was nothing to land on, just gravel) and on one jump I extended fully, then tucked in to land and felt a pull in my lower abdomen, right side. Laid off it for a week or so then went back to training. I could occasionally feel it pulling but not too bad. Today, though, it got so bad that I can't do leg lifts, L-sits, long precisions, anything that engages the lower abdomen. It's roughly where the appendix would be, but it's not a chronic or persistent pain - only when doing specific targeted movements. There is no visible bruising or protrusion, so I don't think it's a hernia either.

Pics & Vids / My first training video
« on: March 15, 2011, 08:58:08 PM »
Today I took my video camera out for my second real parkour training session. For the past month or so I've been conditioning but haven't had much chance to get any outdoor time. Just a bit of basic, beginning moves to work on and analyze.

Part one - picnic table precisions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWJLCjdJzjg

Parkour And Freerunning / Dream a little dream...
« on: January 29, 2011, 05:01:02 AM »
Last night I dreamt that I was practicing parkour. I have not done anything more than learn how to roll, but in this dream I had moves, I had flow, I had some real skill...and it was so much fun! This took place at some fictional location in Albany; a big modern building, with some offices and public courtyards, plenty of cement steps, metal railings, even part of an old aqueduct - even a secret place that I found with some traceuse that was also there.

Now I'm getting antsy. C'mon, snow, melt!

Movement / Another roll question: both sides
« on: January 12, 2011, 03:23:41 PM »
I've started my parkour training by rolling in the snow (fun, right?). When I roll from my left shoulder to right hip it's fine, but right-to-left I always seem to "flop" it and land on my left hip. Do most practitioners roll only one way, or favor a shoulder, or is it important to do both sides?
