Kansas / International Parkour Day in Witchita?
« on: June 03, 2011, 12:42:22 PM »
I'm going to be in Witchita tomorrow and was wondering if anyone was planning a meet up or jam. I'm from the Kansas City area (Olathe Parkour) but I'm coming to with my family to "visit family", which for me means, go out and train. If anyone is planning anything, let me know via PM or reply to this thread.

Thanks,
Collin

M@,

Thanks for posting! I highly enjoy Ronald Jenkees and his music. The message at the end definitely can be applied to all of our parkour videos!

Surely none of you have a reason to quote this. You're arms must be tired enough already.

Quote.

But seriously, this is a great idea, as I said before.

I do think I'll be incorporating this with other things since I do not post a lot on here. Maybe 10 pull-ups for every facebook status I make? Who knows!

Nick,

I think this would be a great idea! Just know that an online radio station does take a lot more work than you might think.

If you need any help, I would be more than glad to help. I have been a DJ for quite a few years and have been running an online radio station for about 4 years, so I know a thing or two about running one.

thanks alot great advice.p.s. is it a good idea to give him the web address

Yes, that would be an excellent idea!

Not only would another potential Traceur be a member here, but he could use all of the resources (and people!) to help him learn things you can't teach him.

So, although not quite official team members, you would say that you have certain people, those that are more experienced, leading the team/community?

I suppose you could look at it that way, yes. We don't really have a "leader", as more of just us original few who formed it, who are also the most experienced (right now, anyways). The only real way to tell if someone is an "official" member of OPK is if they have one of our members shirts (which members receive after showing they are really here to train and do Parkour for the right reasons, usually about 2-3 weeks after they join).

I'm sorry, man. If it seemed like I was saying it was about having a cool name and symbol, it wasn't what I meant. Although, if we're talking about a county-sized area, 13 people seems big enough to call it a community to me, and what you just described seems like a community to me, but if you insist, I'll refer to it as a team. Actually, I'm all for having a cool symbol; a cool name is almost good, but it would be easier to find a local community that calls itself "Alaska Parkour" than a local community that calls itself "Snowrunners," if you get what I mean.

No apologies are necessary man! I think I might have just misread your post. I do see where you are a community, and to be honest, we do use the term community and team interchangeably, depending on where we are/what we are doing. I agree, having a cool symbol and being a part of a group/team/community is awesome, but it is more about the spreading of Parkour in a positive manner.

We have a group around here that started up and are calling themselves "Rush", and no one knows about them, yet everyone around here knows about Olathe Parkour. Something that has helped us flourish compared to "Rush" who I have heard are more hoodlums than traceurs, is the fact we are always respectful, especially when wearing OPK or Parkour related clothing. We want to give Parkour a good name so we can help it spread in a good way.

in a positive....way? Hahaha, did you get interrupted mid-response there?

Maybe he fell asleep. Happens to the best of us.

My thoughts are in line with most of you here. "Teams" that are run as local communities can serve to unite and inspire its members and those around them. It's exclusive teams that I disagree with, since they often do not provide a welcoming, encouraging atmosphere to others.

I agree with you, and that is why we are not an exclusive team! I understand exclusive teams and their purpose, but our local team/community is not meant to fill that roll.

Hahaha yes I did, my apologies! Darn houses catching on fire ;) Thank you for finishing out my sentence though!

But yes, refer to my original post, just add "way." at the end of the last sentence.

So, in other words, it's a community with a cool name and symbol?

I suppose if you want to call it a community, then yes, you can. Although, I don't think 13 people is really a community ;)

In all seriousness, it's not about having a name, or being a part of something special or having a cool symbol you can wear. It's about learning new training methods, getting different opinions on what you are doing from people you haven't known as long, and spreading the word of Parkour in a positive

When I first started training Parkour, I was not big on the whole "team" thing. I had myself and 3 other friends who practiced, and we just went out and trained once or twice a week. However, we had a few additional friends who wanted to start, and we decided to start a team (I was still a bit hesitant). We created t-shirts, and carried a few of the Parkour FAQ print outs (which is somewhere on this forum) with us. People stop and ask us what we are doing and who we are, and we explain.

Our team is not selective at all. We allow anyone and everyone who is willing to give Parkour even a small chance. We don't charge fees or anything stupid. We went from a group of friends to a city group, and through the group, we have made new friends.

We use our team more to help get Parkour recognized in our area and help get more people interested than anything else. We rarely put videos on Youtube (I think we have maybe 2 or 3 actual videos, the rest are training snips from when Mountain Dew came out and filmed us).

I do agree though teams are not a necessity, unless you are a large group such as PKGens.

I'd recommend an "online library" such as Gale.  Even though it is on the internet, it can count as a print/reference source because it is a digital copy of an actual book!  I'll get you some more details about this tomorrow from my English teacher!

We actually use Gale, but our teacher isn't letting us use it as a print/reference, instead we are using it as a database resource. Thanks for the reply though!

Parkour And Freerunning / Research paper on David Belle OR Daniel Ilabaca
« on: January 26, 2011, 07:48:49 PM »
Hey everybody,

After searching the forum, I found nothing of help. I'm writing a research paper on a person, and I chose David Belle as my primary person, and Daniel Ilabaca as my secondary (secondary person is used if I can't find enough on David Belle).

I have to have 2 internet sources (no Wikipedia), 1 reference book (dictionary, encyclopedia, etc) and one book (either fiction or non-fiction).

Can ANYONE help me out? I spent all class yesterday (an hour) in our school library looking for either a reference book or a book (fict./non-fict.) to no avail.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Even though they are broad (which I completely understand why they have to be), they are still great help and I appreciate it.

Happy training everybody!
