Women / Re: Pants anyone?
« on: June 19, 2011, 09:27:05 AM »
I barely ever train in shorts. I just like sweatpants too much! And I actually really like training with my hair down. If it's not down I usually put it in a bun or ponytail.

Although, sometimes I do train in shorts or I will wear a pair under my sweatpants. I usually find my sweats at target. My two favorite pairs are from there. Otherwise I just search around and if I happen to find something, I buy it!

BTW, Andrea, they are generally called negatives. I haven't heard another name for them. So I'm pretty sure you're right! :)

Women / Re: "Girl" Push ups V.S. "Boy" Push ups
« on: June 19, 2011, 09:19:42 AM »
Hmmm.

I would not call them girl push ups. If you cannot do a full range push up then do the halfway pushups until you can do full range ones. Or, go down into a full range push up and try to push back up as hard as you can and when you can't just switch to your knees and come up on your knees, then back to full range and up on your knees, till you are strong enough to get a full range.

This is how I did it. And it works very well and quickly if you commit to it, at least twice a week. I would do 3 sets of as many pushups as I could with a 40 sec or so rest in between sets. In no time, you'll have full range push ups.

Guys who cannot do full range pushups can use this method as well. That's why I would not call them "girl pushups" because it's merely adding leverage by being on your knees so that you do not have to push as much of your body weight up and down. Then when you are strong enough you take away leverage and do it on your toes!

message me if you have more questions :)

Women / Re: National Jam

Well, I see your point with Florida being hot. Personally, I just deal with it and drink lots of water because it's where I live and I am not going to stop training because of the heat.

Although, Florida is really a great place to train in the winter/fall time. It does not get too cold here.

If anyone else is willing to head up a National jam at a more central location for everyone, then awesome. I'd love to help plan. However, I really don't know any other places well enough to do the bulk of the planning for where to stay and where the training spots are.

Basically, my purpose in making this thread was to see if anyone in a good location wanted to head it up. D.C. is not exactly the best place for people coming from California but the community there is pretty active.

For my part: 1) Florida in the fall (if people's schedules allow) is a beautiful place to train 2) Flying into Orlando tends to be cheaper because of Disney 3) The Florida community is VERY active as far as women are concerned  4) I am able & willing to accommodate and plan the whole thing at a very minimal cost

I think it's rather late for a national women's jam this summer, unless it's August. And Florida tends to cool down in August anyways. If anyone else wants to step up from a more central area, please do. If you feel you're not skilled enough or don't know enough, it's not a big deal. We can always work around that.

Awesome. Well, I'd love to host but then my location is not very central across the USA. However, Florida is PRETTY awesome.

Comments? Thoughts?

Women / Re: Barbells
« on: April 21, 2011, 06:45:37 AM »
It's not insane to say that barbells are useless. It's just a startling statement. There are a lot of people who use their own body weight and leverage to become stronger than you ever could with barbells. Also, if you're lifting, that strength will not transfer to body weight strength but the reverse is true. Body weight strength training will enable you to lift heavier.

Yes, barbells will get you in shape and make you look cut. Yes, it can also make you strong. However, body weight strength training will make you stronger and you never have to pick up a barbell in your life which, for those people makes barbells completely useless. Also, when conditioning lower body you will have to use weights because there is only so much leverage you can take away. However this weight is in the form of a weight vest, free weights, and resistance bands. You can do it without barbells.

So, please be careful of the tone you use here. Also, Neta is a strong girl and I know how she works out. Plus, she is Polish and her English is rather broken so sometimes I think it is hard for her to get her point across fully.

Thanks for the input!

Women / Re: Introductions

Hey! The name's Serenity, I'm 15 and living in the Sacramento area of CA. Theres not a whole lot of training areas around here, but I make do with what I've got. I've been practicing parkour for about 2 years now, but due to a multitude of joint injuries have been (mostly) out of commission about 2 months. Also, since I swim nationally, serious training doesn't happen often, since swim doesn't have an off season :P

Yikes! I was a competitive swimmer for 7 years or so. I had to bow out with a shoulder injury. I loved it, though! And you're sooo right, swim doesn't have an off season! ughughugh. always with the raccoon eyes in the summer. I'll most likely be traveling in CA this summer. Keep in touch! Take it easy and let yourself heal, especially if you're doing all the training for swimming. I know how tough it can be. smiles, Joy-Marie

Women / National Jam

What do you ladies think of having a national women's jam this summer?? I've been seeing so much more interest. Even if we could do jams in different regions all over the states, that would be awesome. Let's talk it out and discuss!
