Ok, here's my review of the show so far:

Overall, it's pretty decent. The videos are always great because they let the teams do what THEY want to do. The audio could be a bit better, but you have to remember that it's a live show, so some messups are bound to happen. The speed runs they were doing with the first episodes seemed alright, but could have been better. They were a bit limited, telling the Traceurs exactley where to go instead of letting them decide how to do something. Luckily, I think they fixed this with the latest final round, at the castle. It makes them use their skills to get to certain places, but lets them do it how they want. They also have a time limit, which means efficieny has to be a player. The flips and everything are for the media, and for fun among the Traceurs. I think the show will have a moslty positive impact. They do a fairly good job explaining what Parkour is, and advise against reckless recreation of it. The Traceurs on the show are what really make it positive though. They're not in it to win. They're there to have fun and see what they can do while spreading the message of Parkour. Their "competition" is all in fun, nothing serious. So...

At the moment, it would have to be vertical wall run. I've become beastly at them recently, and I love it!

Do you have a trampoline? Thats how I've been training for a while. Use the tramp to get used to the general feeling of flips, and gradually try doing them with less bounce at the beginning. Once you can do it just standing on it, try doing them from the outer rail of the trampoline and flipping onto it. That should be a good start.

Freerunning / Re: Front Flip: Ground Vs. Rail
« on: January 26, 2010, 05:20:49 PM »
I disagree. The two are nothing alike. he can start practicing on the ground but atleast have a pad to land on or even better a spring floor at a gymnastics gym + a landing pad

Vertical leap is very important and the other component that you can't get from jumping from the outer rail onto the tramp, (probably more important if your hops are OK) is "blocking"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNAe3okMud0

Also these are really bad for your knees and ankles if you under rotate. Please get some type of landing pad or go to a gymnastics open gym if possible. Flat ground is allot different and harder than what you are practicing. Watch allot of tutorials to make sure you know everything you need to do.

Thanks for the advice. This will probably help a ton. For the record, I have tried some front flips at Artsports, and they seemed to be "ok" for me at the time (about a month ago... improvements have been made). I landed on my feet every time, but usually ended up having to catch myself with my hands behind me. Im not sure if I did as well as I did because of the spring in the floor, or if it was my actual technique. Still, thanks again for the tips. I'll have to get back to you when I can find a good place to try it on the ground.

Freerunning / Front Flip: Ground Vs. Rail
« on: January 23, 2010, 08:22:31 PM »
Ok, I've been practicing front flips in the only way I can at the moment: I jump onto the outer rail of my trampoline and flip onto the tramp. I can usually make it alright, but here's my question: Is learning to front flip off a rail harder than a larger flat surface, or are they the same? I'm wondering if I've skipped straight to a harder move, meaning I'm ready for a front flip on the ground or off a low object.

Movement / Re: Climbing
« on: January 23, 2010, 05:13:48 PM »
I've run into this problem a lot, and solved it by looking up tutorials on youtube. Here's what I learned: One good way to get up the wall is to plant one foot against the wall (in the cat leap position), and swing the opposite knee upward. At the same time, kick up and against the wall with the planted foot, just like in a wall run. While your legs give you some momentum, pull yourself up and toward the wall with your arms. Try to get the majority of your torso on top, epsecially the elbows (but don't use them to get over). Once you're there, just push the rest of your body up and kick your legs over or on top of the wall. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Parkour / Re: Diving rolls..... or supermans
« on: January 17, 2010, 12:41:33 AM »
I too have been trying out some dive rolls on softer surfaces, and you're technique sounds like what my friend does. I find my technique to be a bit more efficient and less painful. I dive starting like a kong, and as soon as my hands hit the ground, I tuck my legs in and start to collapse one of my arms. Doing this lets the ground travle up my arm and onto my back, so the whole thing ends looking like a normal roll: going from shoulder to opposite hip. Maybe you can try it out and see if it helps more than tucking your head under and rolling straight down your back.

i didnt mean training like actualy parkour itself, i mean training like exercise like lifting weights, crunches all that jazz sorry, thats my fault for not being very descriptive.
Well, I just do a few quick body weight excercises every night and I seem to get by alright. It's up to you really.

Ha ha, you just need to train when you want, when you want. If you see something to vault or a gap to jump, go for it. Like the guy above said, just live free. If you want to put in a daily routine or workout or something, go ahead, but dont let that stop you from ahving fun and being free.

Colorado / Re: tucking?
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:55:52 AM »
alright ill work on my core some more, and ill try and post a video, i also noticed i tend to jump forward instead of upward, so its more like a diveroll.
Well, that might be part of the problem. I've noticed that when practicing flips onto my trampoline, moving forward more than up really reduces your air time, forcing you to tuck faster than you have to. Maybe work on your vertical more and see if the same tuck timing works better that way. If not, the try practicing jumping straight up and tucking your knees to your chest hard and fast (without actually flipping) right before the peak of the jump. Once you got this, just combine it with the rotation of the rest of your body during the flip. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I want this game SOOO bad! Ive watched a bunch of gameplay and am still stuck playing the first :( I hear the story is much more amazing than the first, like hollywood movie amazing. By the way, for everyone confused: the full name is "Ezio Auditore da Firenze", which I think is much cooler than "Altiar Ibn la Ahad".... :P

Well, Ive become a bit more in shape from just practicing the techniques. Conditioning can only add to that I think. I say you should still practice the techniques a lot, but try out some conditioning during down time between trainig sessions. Thats what Im gonna start doing.

Parkour / Re: usual age to start?
« on: November 18, 2009, 08:53:07 AM »
Well, my whole life I've never been one to follow boundaries, and I've always been climbing and jumping on stuff. I learned about Parkour just two months before my 16th birthday, and I realized I had been doing similar stuff my whole life, but this was just A LOT more complex and bigger. I just wish I had a more physical background to help me.

Movement / Re: Rolling on concrete; my spine's getting in the way!
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:28:04 AM »
I would try adjusting the exit angle. I face 90 degrees from my starting position, and it helps a lot. Also, maybe you just need to build more muscle on your back, it helped me. More muscle means more cushion for the trouble spots like hips, spines, and shoulders.

Parkour And Freerunning / Re: YOUTUBERS...
« on: November 04, 2009, 07:58:38 AM »
I came from youtube videos. Though, I was introduced to the idea of Parkour/ Freerunning from Assassin's Creed and, shortly after, Mirrors Edge. Once I found it on you tube, I watched a TON of samplers and tutorials. From there, I studied the techniques and philosophy and realized it fit who I am perfectly. The rest is history after that. I started trying some simple stuff at the park and in my house and have slowly progressed since. And here I am, nine months later doing fairly well.
