I think we need to have a revival here. I like how Hawaii's boards are, maybe we could be like that. I know we don't have that big of a community but we should get are community going!
So let's all introduce ourselves....joking, sounds like first grade haha. Anyways where is everyone from? How many years/months have you been training? Do you like to train in the city/gym/nature?
I'll go first.
I'm from Boise. I've been training on and off for a year, diligently for about 6 months. I like training in the city and in nature, I haven't trained in a gym yet.
Let's get our parkour community rollin' and to get it growing.

Have been doing Parkour casually for fun since 2007
I usually play outdoors in nature and natural settings which Hawaii seems to have a lot of. It's almost a spiritual communion thing with me.
I usually avoid training in the city. For the younger crowd, when people see them, they usually pay no mind or at least tolerate them.
When they see a 42 year old man bounding over railings and doing cat leaps on a wall, they call the cops and report a suspicious male. LOL
Not to mention there's that stigma about being chased away from places or complaints from security etc.
It's a little different for obviously older adults. Kids just get chased away. I, on the other hand, tend to get asked for ID and they run a warrant check and rap sheet and then I get lectured that "I should know better" or get threatened with arrest.
I might be going against the grain from most PK guys, because I use the word 'play' instead of 'train'. 'Train' sounds so strict and regimented to me for something that is supposed to be the embodiment of freedom of movement, but to each his own.
I approach it as play, plain and simple. When children run and jump, tumble and climb trees, it's play. That's how their developing bodies learn motor skills. It's natural and they have the best fun while doing it. They don't 'train' to do these things. You don't seem to notice being tired as fast nor do you get frustrated or discouraged if you can't perform a certain movement with perfect form, because you're having fun. And who gets frustrated while they are having fun?

I'm Chris, little younger (19 to be exact), been training off and on for the past year or so, and I also go to BSU.

Yeah, I'm pretty casual. I'm one of those guys who just enjoys Parkour to have fun and the simple joy of being able to move. I'm a disabled vet (Afghanistan). My injury was what got me started with Parkour though.
You never realize how much you miss something until it gets taken from you. I got started in Parkour in 2007-2008 as part of my own self initiated physical therapy, believe it or not, and now I just have fun when the mood to MOVE strikes me. I don't have any set or strict training schedules or anything like that.

I feel the need to give you all a lil update. Im sure you have noticed my lack of participation on the forums. Site in general.
While most of my lack of participation is due to not having my own computer, having to rely on whenever I get a chance, I have also been "focusing" on really doing the things I enjoy the most, while PK is one of them, it is really not at the top. Im just out there these days, moving, exploring, enhancing my life in several different ways.
I have noticed you guys are doing well planning jams w/o me. Something that in the pass worried me a bit. I dont want to feel like you all NEED me to be the leader, organizing event and what not. This is YOUR community, and with or without me it reminds to be so. Im not sure how much longer Ill be here (no plans of leaving, not today or tomorrow, but next month you never know) and I want to feel like HIpk will remind once/if I leave.
I do however need help from you guys. Front page is my most important responsibility. And while the forum can take care of itself, front page needs more attention. I used to updated it at least every other day but now a days it is harder for me, either for lack of info or just lack of computer access.
Id like to train a couple people. Who can help me take care of posting news on front page. Nothing else but that. Ill take care of the rest.
Then Id like to have some other people who can basically just send me stuff to post on the front page. Ready to just be posted. With a picture and content. You can send them to hawaiiparkour@gmail.com and then that will be put on cue/waiting list until it is ready to be posted.
Again, this is our community, this is our site, with everyones help it can be the best it can be.
You all continue to be awesome and doing what you do, what you do and bring to the community is already greatly appreciated.

It would be nice to make connections with some Tracers (traceurs) in the Boise area.
I'm a novice or at the beginner level. Have most of the basics down, vaults, kong, cat leap, precisions, etc. I'm 42 and a disabled vet. (oh trust me, I can still move pretty good)
I was with HIPK for a little while, but got caught up in a military project. Now transplanting to attend BSU in the Spring to pursue a degree in biomechanics. I've read some of the Idaho threads and it is very encouraging to see BSU seems to be a common jam spot.

I hope I can make it if work doesn't get in the way. Yeah, I used to go to jams pretty regularly, but work kinda took over recently most probably because of the economic climate and all the uncertainty out there. A lot of people are afraid and don't know how to deal with it. I do outreach and social work with at-risk teens and their families. I've just had a lot of priority cases come up one after another lately.

I've noticed some areas, like Bilger and the business buildings, that look good. I'm in Hale Kahawai btw.
My major is French right now, and I'm going to switch to Peace Studies but it's interdisciplinary so I have to wait until I have 55 credits. No big deal though.
Thanks for the phone number too, mine's 630-605-4414. Don't worry, it's the same price to call and text as it is for anyone here. AT&T hooked me up haha. I'll see you around, if not tomorrow sometime soon.
My only transportation is my bike, my bus pass, and my feet, so it shouldn't be too big of an issue, but anything short-notice and more than 5 miles away is gonna be an issue haha.
I feel like this is a really eclectic post without transitions, but I think you'll get the info out of it. Thanks for the welcome guys!
UH has some really good spots. JC can prolly tell you a couple funny stories about smelly fish water and a 10 story parking structure.

Just wanted to let you all know I'm still alive and kicking, just doing a lot of crisis management right now at work.
We kinda got slammed with priority cases. (I thought the economy was recovering, but I guess not)
Families being evicted, no food, people being arrested, etc. all kinds of crazy stuff going on.
Hopefully, I'll have time soon to make it to the jams again.

Well, depends on the jurisdiction. Trespass laws can vary slightly by state and city. This sounds like it's going to take place in Europe. I have no clue how they handle their laws there.

If the cops are using good tactics, your best weapon is misdirection and using their tactics against them. Most cops don't expect someone to know their tactics. Let the bird dog see you intentionally and mislead him, so he relays wrong info back to the rest of the chasers. Use concealment, then run the other way when they go past, etc. Make it look like you're heading somewhere, so they waste time and energy trying to cut you off and then veer off on a different route at the last second. Use their numbers against them, run them into each other.
Try not to panic or get tunnel vision. Keep it fun for you. You'll be able to think clearer on the move that way and make better instant decisions. Don't get too fancy, you run the risk of injury and getting caught. Control your breathing and you'll last longer.

Plus alot of newer cops are bound to be athletes so I don't honestly don't think he stands much of a chance sorry.
Well, the key word is 'IF' they are well trained. If they aren't, make sure there's a video, so we can all see the keystone cops chase scene. LOL
A lot of the bigger police departments in the US have a tactical course as part of the training, but not all departments have them. Usually small towns and smaller police depts. don't bother with this kind of training. This guy sounds like he's from Europe, so I really can't speak for how they train their police there.

As a former police officer, here's a few things you'll need to consider.
1. Expect "pack mentality" and tactics. If they have radios, they'll be communicating and using team work if they are properly trained.
'The bird dog' : his job is not to catch you, but to point you out to other chasers so they can coordinate how to surround you, corner you or cut you off. He only needs to keep you in sight.
'Herders' : Again, their job is not to catch you, just be able to be seen by you, so you'll try to avoid them and be "herded" to a place where you won't be able to run such as a dead end or into another group of chasers.
Don't expect all of them to be running behind you, most likely they'll be fanning out strategically. The danger of getting caught isn't from the guy behind you or the guys that you see circling. They're just to grab your attention and distract you. The danger will come from the guys you don't see.
As another poster said, they'll predictably be setting up a perimeter to try and keep you contained in an area and then moving in.
Another common tactic is just following you around until you tire yourself out or make a mistake.
2. Is the place where the chase is to take place known to you? Provide real training. Do what a criminal would do. Scout the place and do recon. Note different routes, dead ends, obstacles, hiding places, etc. Most criminals operate within a given territory for just this reason, because they know it. Cops usually have assigned beats, most of them know their beat just as well as the criminals do.
3. I highly doubt the chase will take place in a crowded busy location with lots of bystanders simply because of liability and risk of injury to the public, so don't bank on crowds to hide you. I'm sure most police organizations would not sanction a police chase through a busy metropolitan area full of people who might get bowled over or pushed out of the way and get injured by overzealous police men just for the sake of a training exercise.
4. Get ready to dodge and jook. Not all cops are fat, doughnut eating slobs. Some are very accomplished athletes and martial artists in their own right who may be able to keep up with you, if not outrun you. Don't get over confident.

LOL I get the same feeling when someone describes me as 'oriental' instead of Asian. OBJECTS are oriental. Last time I checked, I was not a lamp or a rug.
Also reminds me of how the Pashtuns don't like being called Afghani or Afghans. Afghani is the name for their currency. Afghan describes objects as well. (i.e. - afghan rugs)

« on: July 14, 2009, 07:31:39 PM »um, there are security guards that ride around in golf carts (I actually work at the same hotel as one of them).... but I've gone b4 and they've never given me any trouble (I just move from spot to spot, and not linger in one place for too long). Very good point though, police do hang around. But most spots are outside their view as they are inside the campus.

District 7 - Sector 13 - Beats 81 through 85 - Kapahulu Ave. to Kalanianaole Hwy. All 6 beat cops have the key to the building closest to the graveyard on the Diamond Head side, or at least we used to.
Beats 84 and 85 were my stomping grounds for 4 years, never seen a guard once. Must be something new. LOL
