Last night I had a very odd dream involving PK. I was in a mall for some reason and I was holding a pizza. All of a sudden this guy runs out of nowhere andd takes my damn pizza!! So, naturally I chase him down and get the pizza back. This is where it gets wierd . . . apparently he has many friends who happen to be ninjas

In some other APK thread, an experienced traceur stated that greater forward velocity dramatically decreases the perceived force of a ten-foot-drop landing versus a straight drop.  Perhaps that's because the forward velocity propels you into a roll faster, and a larger area of the body takes the deceleration...

When you jump off a horizontal surface and jump horizontally away from it, does the curve describing your movement grow steeper over time? In other words, do you start to fall more down per second than across?

If that's the case, it might be worthwhile to do a straight-down vertical jump and then use the side of that wall to propel yourself sideways using your legs, to create a sideways motion that is fresh and strong when it's most needed.

it's a worth while read on the state of parenting in America today.

I could only make it through 4 pages. I've already been through "Chuck" tonight, I don't have time to critique another portrayal as being not only behind the times but, in some cases, inexplicably and insanely outside any times I've known. The placement and common bias of so many misleading "errors only by omission" suggests either an editorial or someone who is sadly undereducated about exceptions to her precious "reality".

Or perhaps I'm being too harsh, after all "Chuck" has sorely tried my patience tonight. I'll take another look at it Wednesday.

And probably write a scathing criticism ;)

The laptop responsible for detonating (and, until the right time, not detonating) a bomb is running Windows? I think they discarded that idea (of using an OS running several other processes for such critical tasks) years ago.

Furthermore, it has a "DOS override"? I know that Microsoft has failed to implement DRM as successfully as they would've liked with Longhorn - sorry, I mean Vista - but they stopped building Windows on top of DOS after ME.

The premise - of a computer that predicts patterns individuals cannot see - is nothing new, but has always suffered from the critical flaw of seeing patterns which do not correlate to reality. In short, of noticing that which does not exist. I could imagine a decent show built from a main character whose head is full of conspiracy theories noone else has, but, somehow, I don't think that's where this show will be going.

Watching the premiere now.

It was a fun time working such a big production but McG ripped off a lot from B13 which is not cool.

Agreed, it was disappointing when I noticed them copying the move.

It was even more disappointing when the person carrying off these moves died (no more PK from him, clearly).

The overall disappointment is from how the writers' level of technological understanding appears to match that of the main character's. Even worse, it's not clear whether the latter was intended to be humorous. Translation: it might be accidental, with the writers actually intending to represent Chuck as expert.

I think my question was more about whether it matters . . . it's one more way in which the line between "urban" (cityscape) and non-city landscape is blurring.

Will they have flashback-style cinematic scenes to unfold the plot as you sift through their memories?

Tracking down otherwise unimportant NPC's to glean some vital knowledge from their minds . . . or just add some color to the world . . . sounds like a sensible mechanic to me!

Fnord!? Have you been reading books by Robert Anton Wilson? I actually met that guy at a rave in a huge warehouse in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin, back in the old days before I became a muslim.. That was like around the mid to late 90's.

History suggests the term predates him, then. On the other hand, when were the books you're thinking of written?

My favorite aspect is that they are just plain good shoes and you can wear them anytime. 

That's good to hear. I've been reading recommendations for various good-for-PK shoes, most of them expensive, and wondering which of them are durable and comfortable for everyday movement, that could be worn around all the time and not wear out as rapidly as if they were being used for parkour.

I'm too damn skinny for my own good.

It's supposed to be a snug fit. I wore it over one T-shirt, partially to protect me from ice burns in case it was too cold. It felt loose. (Size=33!)

The feeling of coldness quickly faded. I think the strong thermal sensation is through contrast, and even with the sun heating me up from outside, the overall difference was never severe enough to make me feel it as acutely as when I first put it on. I'd probably need a temperature sensor to be sure. Also, it might have been reacting (to my body's heat) quickly enough that my temperature was never able to get that high.

Within a few blocks, I felt as if I'd been sweating for hours. This was probably due to my wearing it over one layer of normal cloth; the Sportwool is designed to "wisk" moisture away from the skin, preventing exactly this problem, but with my T-shirt there, the moisture probably got trapped and contributed to more heating. This also may have retarded the evaporation process, which suggests that greater cooling benefits will be seen when wearing it directly next to the skin.

Depends on your occupation.

I could just point at a nearby building and say "I'm with security* . . . getting ready to evaluate how secure their walls are."

*Just not with that building's security. Fnord.

Your pursuer wouldn't need to hang and drop, because you've just provided them with a really nifty landing pad ;)

There are studies out on using weight vests and having people significantly increase their vertical leaps BUT once they take it off it goes away. Therefore, the adaptions are most likely neurological which cannot be kept by the body very well unless you wear it all the time (which is also not adviseable).

Unless the weights have their own benefits, such as Kevlar or a cooling vest, in which case you'd better be wearing one all the time ;)

I train my body every day
, and do parkour every other.

Take some time off. At least rotate which parts of your body are being trained. It's important to give yourself time to rest and recover. Constant training can wear out your body, break it down.

not to take this off topic, but WHY would someone be chasing you? What would it be worth to them to catch you?

Let's say, to reverse this, that we're chasing them - as in, someone just stole the briefcase with my client's data, and I need it back. They do a drop. They're better at parkour than I am, so that's a good decision for them.

And, in that moment where they're still facing the wall, then turning around to continue running, I look down on them.

And smile.

And then I leap down, using them to break my fall.

I would reccomend weight vests over ankle weights.  In my experience it is easier to control your movements and there is less clattering around.  you end up with too much extra momentum on your feet with ankle weights.

I lack direct experience in ankle weights specifically, but have hearsay from other areas that going from high weight to low weight tosses precision right out the window. You're used to compensating for all that extra inertia, and suddenly you're over-compensating. I think you'd probably notice the difference most in precision jumps, especially when aiming for a narrow horizontal beam/etc.
