This is pretty amazing!!

Jan-Su - I honestly can no tell if you are being sarcastic.

I do hope that people act respectfully - especially while wearin APK gear and therefore being a representative of parkour.

Asking someone to be capable of performing, even at a rudimentary level, is not what this is about though. That's like saying "Don't wear a _______ shirt if you can't do a 360 kickflip" - I also don't agree that anyone should "perform" when asked. I do feel people should have a clear definition of parkour which they can explain simply, calmly, and non-defensively, however if someone asks me to do a trick, my reply is simply that I train for me, not for their entertainment.

Again, "focusing on quality in your movement" does not mean "only being able to perform well" - everyone falls, everyone is learning and working on something. I am certain that if someone (at any skill level) focuses on quality of movement, their movement will improve.

I will be using a mix of "I" and "We" because much of the direction and values of APK come directly from me, but are shared and reinforced by tons of people who make up the working side of APK and thousands of people who make up the community side.

I made a post which stated "When you wear your APK gear to train in public, please make quality of movement your top priority"

This thread is to have a discussion about that post, and the way that people perceived it.

Many people said "it could have been worded better" - and I agree - I thought that it had the word "Focus" - "please focus on quality of movement" instead, it says "make it a top priority" which to me meant the same thing.

What it does not say, is "if you do not have quality movement, do not wear APK clothing". There is a big difference between "making the quality of your movement a priority" - which implies "quality over: speed, size of jumps, technical difficulty" vs having "quality movement", one is a goal, the other is a descriptor. APK stands that focusing on the quality of your movement is a value that we adhere to and want our community to adhere to. I have explained this all now several times, yet people keep posting "If you suck, don't wear APK clothing" - which is not what we ever said or meant.

It would be very uncharacteristic of APK to say "don't be bad at parkour, don't be a beginner, don't be a novice". We have not ever said those thing. What we have said, many times, is that it doesn't matter how far, how high, or how big you can do something, it matters how well you can do it, that is quality of movement.

I feel like the thing that the people who are misinterpreting this have missed is the word "of" - the simple difference between "Quality movement" and "Quality of movement" - words are important.

If you're from the crew who feels that APK said "don't wear our clothes if you suck" I'd like to hear how you interpreted it that way and why you feel APK would say that?

Thanks!

43.233 - Still have not bought a disposable water bottle this year. Only used the two I have already mentioned. Been about 40% with my mobility stuff, need to get back on that.
Last week - Rock Climbing Tuesday and Thursday.
Last Sunday (230) Hike 10 Miles
Yesterday - some back tuck work
Today - some back tuck work, wallspins, general conditioning stuff.

Eating really well. No candy (marshmallows on the campfires are my exception). No grains (unless by mistake as part of a sauce / food when eating out)

Shu, great post!!!

The issues you're facing are all pretty common ones!

For the run-up confidence, try doing cadence and foot placement drills - run up to a root and jump off it- that way you can time your pacing without the consequence of smashing your knee, you can build up your pace and work off the stutter, then apply that to your vaults.

Also, when out for a jog, just plan your steps, whether it's just counting steps and planning which foot hits a crack, to trying little take-offs.

Keep up the great work!

Jog with a dog turned out to be 1.3 miles again, but measured more accurately this time, so I think last time was a little shorter. Dog was a little happier about not sniffing everything. Need to stay out for 30 minutes net time and just enjoy being out and not be rushed.

Monday - nada
Tuesday - Indoor rock climbing  - did 4 5.9's clean - really pleased, one had a very difficult move - also did Drop Training - need to do more of this.

Also, going for a jog with a dog. Still have back pain, especially when sitting or confined, but feeling pretty good physically.

43.211 - It's been a while!

So, mostly kept up mobility until two weeks ago when I got pretty sick. Dropped 15 pounds in 5 days. now fine, feeling pretty good but not full strength.

Been getting a bit of exercise in lately - last week climbing once, parkour class X 2
Sunday - Great Falls hiking, playing, climbing, jumping (jogged last mile(ish) - was very difficult, my aerobic capacity sucks.
Monday - bit of playing around on set for a commercial (just an extra)
Tuesday (Today) Jog with a dog, about 1.3 miles

Hey Shu!

Here's what I do every night, but starting with a :30 Samson Stretch on each side.
http://archives.americanparkour.com/academy/articles/fitness-articles/7937-hip-mobility

I then add (many days but not all) one of the Mobility WOD exercises (search youtube for episode 1,2,3,etc), or one that I have gained from another source.

I usually do two sessions per day, with the hip mobility being the last thing I do before bed, and using it as mediation time as well.
