Title: Midwest Jam-Madison, WI-July 18-20, 2008
Post by: Alissa J. Bratz on October 26, 2007, 08:02:20 PM
After much discussion about where to host the Midwest jam next year, Madparkour has decided to step up and host. We've chosen the weekend of July 18th for the date. More details to come as we get closer to the planning, but we're so excited and honored to host you all!

Okay, to be honest, I'm also kind of scared. :) But I'm excited too and really looking forward to learning from everyone and sharing what a wonderful city Madison is with you!

Any way to post some pics of hotspots that you think will accommodate 40-70 people? I think that weould be a big help since we don't have that many photos / videos form MAD (that I know of?) to go by ...

There are TONS of hotspots in Madison that could accommodate that many people -- over the coming weeks we'll take some pictures and post them.

If you end up coming, M2, maybe you can bring that DVD of photos from the beast coast jam.    ;)

Heh. Well, it could be, relatively speaking. It's about 140 miles away. :)

Hmmmm, it could be huge!!! Well, what do other people think? We could, but a lot of people(or at least me) would be really tired...
No reason why it can't just be next year. I'm fine with that, just as long as I get some people to Minneapolis, I'm happy.

I personally think that a Minneapolis and Madison jam would be cool, but you should do it on two weekends in a row, as opposed to four days. Cause I would want it on a weekend, and if I can make one and not the other that would be nice.

That's true. I'm sure some people work...

I'm possibly going to be nomading across the country this summer, so consecutive weekends would be just as fine with me.

It will cost as much as the trip out here and housing. If it's really a stretch, send me a PM and we can talk. I wouldn't want cost to be a limiting factor in attending the jam!

two weekends in a row is not a good idea, maybe for a small jams but this will force a lot of people to choose between the two jams and draw people away from one jam. its best to spread this all out, one jam in the begining of summer, another in the middle, another in the end etc... were planning on having a chicago jam but it wont be anywhere near the midwest jam.

Post by: Alissa J. Bratz on December 07, 2007, 10:31:54 PM
I agree with Ando; they should be spread out. Be aware, also, that the Madison jam is still tentative. We have to get a few things lined up before we can officially say we're hosting the jam. We'll know more in February or March.

Assuming it all happens, though, all I can say is... there are parts of this jam where it will be *obvious* that a girl was involved in the planning. ;)

I am definetly in. Ive managed to get to the midwest jam the last two years even though it was a 3 hour drive. If its in madison it will be a nice change in distance haha. But madison definetly has some good spots. Police is what im worried about, especially if you are considering any spots near the UW campus. But I will definetly be there, and hopefully with it being closer to fond du lac, i can get my whole crew to come, which should still be about 8-10 people by then.

Re: lodging, we are working on setting something up. Stay tuned. We have time to plan. :)

Here is a question:

I am thinking of offering a ballet conditioning class and/or a flexibility training session that is more formal than the one I did at the CO jam last summer (that one was sort of impromptu). I'm pretty sure we'd have studio space available to use at SMB. For those of you who think it would be a "sissy" thing to do... trust me, ballet is HARD. You will get stronger doing it, I promise. :) Plus I would modify the class to be parkour-specific in many ways.

Thoughts/opinions? I won't feel bad if people don't want to do it; I just thought it might be an interesting option. But please be honest. If it is something you'd want at the jam, I will set it up. If not, no worries; there is certainly plenty more to do in Madison for parkour!

Yeah we probably could do a big jam in MN after the one in WI....and best of all there would be a lot of carpooling back and forth, to and from, etc. Waste less gas.

The only foreseeable problem is, I just (literally just) saw plans for an all-CA jam on the Fourth....or maybe I'll just skip that.

So I'll see you all there, for sure! At least it's not Chicago again, that seemed like a pretty long drive, but Madison is closerish kind of.

Lessee, ballet? If it helps PK, sure. Minneapolis? Crap, I have to drive out there again...

All right, that's my update to the situation, back to not posting on the forums :P

The conditioning class is something that I would be interested in.

I'm curious about lodging too. Keep us posted! Also, my college has a deal with Choice Hotels (Clarion, Econologe etc.) for 10% off your stay anywhere in the world. Students should probably dig around and see if they have any sort of discounts associated with their student ID's.

yep keep us updated on lodging lol im sure ur tired of hearing it but this is out main concern (except for cops and how far the hospital is and how to get there in the first place:]) But yea consider that if TRICKset goes with nlpk and team pandora there is a minimal of 3 people and max of 30 lol so we are eather gonna rent a big van or we are gonna have to get a bus somehow... well the point is our money will b drained if we get a bus and we still need to get a hotel witch if all 30 of us go will try to fit 4 to 5 in each room and then we gotta get on a way back... sooo we ALL got much stuff to think about but oh well we got time... just make sure u guys keep us updated so we can think faster and plan better

Everyone is welcome, of course! My very first jam was the Midwest jam last year, in Chicago, and I'd only been training about 2 weeks at that time. "Training" is actually a pretty liberal description of what I'd been doing that two weeks--I was as newbie as can be; so new I didn't even know how to really train. Everyone at the Chicago jam was so welcoming and helpful. Jams are supposed to be about sharing our knowledge and our love for the discipline, so you are of course welcome to join us. I know my first jam experiences were immense learning experiences for me.

I hope you can make it out to join us. :)

ive decided that i reeeeeaaaaaaaaally wanna go to this summer's jam, and from green bay to madison isnt so bad, and if anyone wanted to get picked up on the way, alil gas money maybe, we could run out to mayville and such and bring some ppl with.

just a thought. at least some ppl would get a ride. less gas. eheh.

its only a possibility so far, but it more than likely can go through
seeing as i have NO experience whatsoever, i dont mind in just watching, taking in the sights, maybe trying out somethings myself with some peoples help.
so ill help first.

That's what I did this past year at the Chicago jam and also the COPK jam. I learned sooooo much at both, even just by watching and talking to people, and trying a handful of things. You may want to at least start conditioning a bit in the meantime. Check out the APK WOD as a starting point. Hope you can make it.

We're still making decisions about which spots to include in the jam. It depends on a lot; the biggest of which is whether or not the jam will actually be held here. Rest assured, as it gets closer we will post pictures and everything else.

As to jamming beforehand, sure thing! Let us know when you guys are interested in coming down this spring.

Should be the end of March at the latest; waiting on several people. At this point it's like a 98% go, so not to worry. I also would not want to spring it on Minneapolis at the last minute, so rest assured you will not be left in the lurch. :)

Am I hearing that people would prefer it be in Minneapolis? It won't hurt my feelings if the answer is "yes." I tend to be the type of person to bumble into something without thinking (this jam is a perfect example); so it's not going to make me upset if people say, "Whoa, Muse, you jumped the gun and/or stepped on toes and/or did a faux pas."

Seriously, please let me know if Minneapolis would be peoples' preference. I'll be honest and say that I'm becoming slightly paranoid that I'm making an ass out of myself here with this jam--so please be up-front with me if you feel that a jam in Madison is a lame idea.

That was my thinking today.  People are expecting it to be in Madison and if we go and change it, it would cause a lot of confusion.

And Ando, I know you're just sayin that cuz it's an hour(ish?) away instead of 6 ;)

I should have a few people coming to this jam even if I can't make it.   :-\  So long as I am back to Connersville in time to make it to work Sunday night I should be fine..... Might even manage to take a vacation day if I have one.

I think I may want to go to this, didn't do anything last summer but work so this one I am designating for national jams, making El paso, NYPK, COPK, adding this may be a good addition, but lodging is where I would definitely appreciate some help.

Hey guys.

Thanks for waiting on this. Alex was in charge of lodging and he had a pretty tough couple of weeks so it took a while for us to get this arranged.

We have tentative housing arrangements. I am still waiting on a contract from the place so I don't want to give too many "official" details, but I wanted to let you know prices so you could start budgeting. I will have official information in a few days, hopefully.

There are three housing options for you to choose from:

1. A private dorm. This will be $15-$20/night. They are giving us a discount. These are your basic "dorm" rooms with a shared bathroom at the end of the hall. The property is right on campus so you will be in the center of the action and within walking distance of all our jam spots. I will have specific details so you can make reservations once I get a contract with them but for now at least you have some dollar amounts to plan from.

I suspect most people will choose this option.

2. A hostel. This is also downtown and within walking distance of everything. This will be, I believe, $22/night for a shared room and $40/night for a private room. They cannot give us a discount, but they are part of HI so if you have a Hostelling International membership you can get discounts through that.

3. A campground. Still waiting to find out about rates on this and it is a bit farther out, so it may be a better option for people who are road-tripping. We can also provide transportation to and from the jam sites if need be. It is still close to downtown, and you could walk but it may be easier to get rides. I will provide camping information as it becomes available. Campgrounds will be between $35-$45/night, depending. (Some of these rates are for large group campsites).

As mentioned, I will give specifics (e.g. the name and contact information for the private dorm, the hostel, and the campground) once I have final contracts with those entities. It will be up to you to call and make your reservations when that information becomes available.

I suspect most will opt for the private dorm option. This place is great. It's cheap, I believe the price includes linens, and it has A/C and great views of the lake. Plus, it's within walking distance of all of our favorite hotspots that we'll be visiting during the jam!

Stay tuned for specifics. :D

I may be traveling with my S/o, with the dorm room situation can we stay together you think?

I don't see why not. They are a private dorm, off-campus. And plus even with the campus dorms, during the summer they rent out space to groups for conferences and the like and they realize that most of these people aren't college kids (well, in our case they likely will be, but you get what I mean). ;)

The woman I'm working with to set this up is on vacation all this week so I won't get the contract, etc. until next Monday, after which point I'll have all the specifics for you. As far as I know, though, Nom, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm so excited!

By the end of this month I expect that more details will be coming, more quickly, as things take shape. I'm super nervous but I'm also really excited for this and I think it will be a really good time.

Hope you guys can make it.

I'm pretty excited about the jam. I went through Wisconsin recently and stopped at the Dells... and I found out about Stand Rock. Its only a five foot gap. ;)

YAY!

:D

Okay, here is the lodging information. There is still one last question I have for them so I have not included any contact info for them. I am still waiting to see if they want me to collect all the reservations from you guys and hand them in in one pack, or if they will be ok with you guys calling them individually to reserve. Once I know that I will post the info here and let you know.

To reiterate:

Midwest Jam 2008, Madison, WI
July 18-20, 2008
Hosted by Madparkour
Traceurs and Freerunners of all experience levels welcome.

Lodging:

Primary lodging will be at The Langdon (http://uhlangdon.com), a private dorm near the UW-Madison campus, near Lake Mendota. Here is a map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=126+Langdon+St.+Madison+Wi&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=49.310476,91.933594&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16)

Cost: $18.89 per person/day, plus a $25.00 non-refundable deposit that can be applied toward the total cost of your room. **Payment is due at the time of check-in**

Cost includes linens (One blanket, two sheets, one washcloth, one pillowcase, and one towel).
Only one (1) packet of linen will be provided to each guest. Additional linen sets are not available. Any missing linens will result in a charge of $40 per set.

Rooms are air-conditioned and have an ethernet jack. Bathrooms are shared, per-floor, dorm-style.

Limited parking is available at The Langdon for an additional $5/day.

Price does NOT include a meal plan. There are plenty of places downtown, within walking distance of The Langdon and our jam spots, to eat for cheap (it is a college town, after all). When you check in at The Langdon you will receive a welcome packet detailing places to eat and shop while in Madison.

RESERVATION DEADLINE: June 1, 2008

Activities/Events:

Jams at Madparkour's favorite downtown spots, BBQ, possibly a ballet class and/or stretching clinic taught by Muse, possibly a conditioning session taught by Chad, and a few other surprises, if we can pull them off. ;)

Dates/times/locations still TBD.

************************************

Again, please don't make reservations until I hear back from The Langdon on how they want us to do it. As details become available, I will post the information in this thread, so check back often.

Hope to see many of you there! I'm starting to get excited! :D

You'd be staying in a private dorm, so I don't know what the rules are there. I would suggest inviting a parent to come to the jam with you! I saw quite a few parents out with their kids at the COPK jam. It was pretty cool! Most of them hung back and watched, took pictures, ran video cameras, etc.

Better yet, get your folks out jumping around with us! :D
