Title: Introduce Yourself!
Post by: Nicolas Finn on December 16, 2006, 09:21:55 AM
Hey everyone.. I just realized that we don't have an introduce yourself topic yet

I think these are great because this way people can call up others in the area, and make sure everything's cool for a jam, or we can at least see how many people are active in our specific area (as opposed to Ohio as a whole)

Just post your:

Name
Callsign (if you have one)
Phone number (home or cell)
City
When you started Parkour
What days are good for you
How far you'd be willing to travel for a jam

If there's any other information you wanna post, then just feel free to post it, I'd love to meet everybody from the OH scene!

See you all later

Yo.
Name- It's Max.

Phone#- (ERASE BY POSTER'S REQUEST) (But e-mail is tons better, mmraz@insight.rr.com)

City- Reynoldsburg, Near Colombus (Columbus? I don't know how to spell my city...).

Parkoured Since: 3-4 months ago. I'm a noob, desperately in need of help lest I fracture a muscle or something... naw, I'm not that bad and I'm all for anything.

Days Good For Me- I'm still in school, so saturdays and during summer if I can't get a job.

How far I'd be willing to travel: To the ends of the earth. But I can't drive anyway, so it doesn't matter. probably couldn't get anybody to drive me much further than an hour, half hour....

Really, I've only been doing Parkour for a few months, three or four or five or something, but before that I've been jumping off my wall, climbing up walls to my roof and stuff. Jumping and climbing 'cause I thought it was awesome, but thankfully now I realize that you've gotta condition and stuff. Christ, I didn't even stretch or anything, ever...

Oi, I don't know if it's possible to remove my phone number from this thread, as I can't find an 'edit post' button or anything, but if anyone sees my above post, please don't call the phone number, just send me an e-mail or a message through this website, thanks. It's the only phone in the house, and my parents have a ''don't put your phone number on the internet'' rule, which I was told of after I got a call today. So that's pretty inconvienient, getting calls, so if it's okay could y'all just send me an e-mail? Thanks.

If you don't mind traveling just a little over that one hour limit you've set for yourself, there is going to be a statewide jam this weekend, right here in Ohio, and there will be plenty of people around who will be happy to help you out, and teach you what they know.

Maybe you could meet up with us for training some time. We will have some stuff going on down here in Columbus during the summer I think.. aside from our regular six day a week training schedule. You are free to join in any time you like, if you happen to be in town. Keep up with the forum so you know what's going on and where, and don't miss out on any events ;)

We have a very active group in Columbus. We train five-six days a week, usually from around 5-7pm (it varries a little depending on the day). Check out our facebook group for details: http://osu.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2446352640

When we figure out our training schedule for next quarter (it should be very similar to this quarter's) we will be sure to post it up on that group.

Hope to see you soon!

Thanks Nick and Muhammad, I will see what I can do to get there, It'll be easier in about six months when I get my license. If you have any tips on preparation I'd be glad to them.

I would see if you could make it to at least one training session. If you can make it to one, we can demonstrate a bunch of conditioning exercises you can practice. You will soon figure out that conditioning is essential to parkour. In fact, I no longer thing of parkour as "an art of movement" as much as a "method of training." Through this training you will learn to move through your environment, but conditioning is such a central tenet of parkour that to simply describe parkour as an "art of movement" is neglecting a large part of the discipline imo. It is through conditioning that you will make your greatest strides and improvement in the long run. Conditioning will create potential that you will be able to form into actualized talent. If you only train technique, your talent level will be greatly hindered by your lack of potential. (This is the trap many of us fall into at least to some degree.)

...but I'm starting to ramble  ;).

Anyways, in the mean time I would soak up all of the information on www.parkourgenerations.com. Also, I would suggest watching Jump London, Jump Britain, Jump Westminster, Generation Yamaksi and Urban Free Flow Volume 3. You can find all of these on google video, and Generation Yamaksi and Jump Westminster can both be found in higher quality downloads elsewhere on the net.

Hope that's enough to get you started and we hope to see you soon!

They had some problems with bots over there. They had to lock down the forums so you have to message the admin to get posting rights. Just be persistent about it and eventually you'll be able to post. We can train next time I'm in town if you're up for it.

I would really like that. I really have no idea where to train if I came to Cincy, but I know some pretty decent spots in Fairfield. Also, I am not that good...so watching someone better than myself would be very helpful. I have done probably 4 training sessions, and I can do wallruns, around 11 foot is my max I think, I can kong, and I'm working on speed vault. I also can kinda precision, been practicing. I guess I'm good for the amount of time I have practiced, but I want to be better!

No, I have not quit smoking I'm sorry to say, I've cut down quite a bit, and I really want to go to the PK event but due to my career, I'm not able to... I really wanted to go to the park this weekend and do some running and jumping around in the woods, some playing... Thanks to the lovely Ohio weather I was not able to, it seems like the past 3 weeks my only day off it has been raining, and I've not got the ability to go around and practice, learning how to land, and roll, cat leaps and all that.
I also want to backflip, I know its not PK, its more free running, but you gotta admit, backflips are cool looking, lolz. So, yea, really if you guys have some advice for me, on managing my time, for doing PK/freerunning. I'm sure my brother will too, but any input I can get from anyone else will help. Thanks guys, hope to meet up sometime soon, and we'll all run around and junk!! 8)

Good job for cutting down, next stop quitting. But yeah, just anytime you have just ten minutes to practice...do it...lol. It helps, no matter what. A little bit of practice is better than none. Everytime.
Title: Re: Introduce Yourself!
Post by: Twentythree on May 11, 2008, 01:12:48 PM
I do practice a little here and there, when I'm at my office, and have a couple moments, while I'm waiting for one of my trainees to get a ride home I jump around on some rails, and climb up the wall, its a little area, but, it really does help, I've noticed a big difference in my balance, even with the little bit I actually am able to do. My biggest thing, with the smoking, is the fact I cant run for long, my lungs burn and I get sick. So thats gotta stop, but until all the subsides when I quit I should be fine.

Most of us in Columbus primarily train around OSU's campus. However, sometimes we head towards downtown (Battelle Riverfront Park) for special occasions. (That's where the Parkour Generations event will be held.)

We are actually not allowed to practice on campus now, but we're working very hard to get the club officially approved, but ya, the Wexner is an amazing place to train. We've done some promotional stuff down by Nationwide Plaza. There's some fun stuff to do down there.

If you ever visit Columbus be sure to find us and we'll be glad to train with ya and house you if you need it.

Then I found out all that has a name, and I love it.....

Thanks guys

Schedule: I practice when I can, but with CC practice and risk of injury, my practice hours are limited. From time to time I'll enjoy a   free run and training session with a few other traceurs.
Distance: Anything in a 15-mile locus would be ideal. For certain occasions or when I get my license, willing to further; reach a greater vicinity.

We'll be having a jam, here in Columbus, on Oct 4th. We will try to pass on some of the information we learned while training with Parkour Generations this summer. During the evening, when training is finished, we plan on discussing parkour's course in Ohio (future plans etc, make sure everyone is on the same page). We will be able to host people on Friday and Saturday night if they don't want to come up early or have to leave late. It should be a fun time!

My buddy is moving to OSU on Wednesday, so I could probably shack up with him. I just restarted my training last Tuesday so my cardio is shot. Oh well, just need to get back into it... now if I can only get permission. This coming from a guy who is 18 years old and living with his parents.  :)

Hope to see you guys soon!

Ahhh!  I'm missing it because of a CC meet.  Nooooo!!!!!
I really wanted to get really involved in learning from you guys too!  GAH!

Oh well, they'll be other times.  *walks away disappointed*

We're at least thinking of making this a regularly scheduled event (once a month, once every few months, we're not really sure yet).

Good to see you around. Feel free to visit us in Columbus some time. We have a group that trains 5 days a week. If you want to come visit on the weekend, let us know ahead of time, and we would have no problem finding time to train on the weekend and probably give you a place to stay as well.

We also have starts a seasonal gathering. You won't want to miss the January gathering. Keep your eyes pealed for more details within a week or so...

Good to see ya on the forum.

There is a group at OSU that trains. We lead practice 5 days a week from 6-8pm (although we will only have practice on Monday and maybe Tuesday of this week because of Thanksgiving break).

Our website will be back up soon (it got hacked), but in the mean time you can join our facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34899344349

One tip that beginners should always note: Don't jump off of anything that you can't jump onto.  A huge mistake that a lot of people make is let their ego run wild and think that taking huge drops makes them look cool.  I cannot stress enough how stupid it is to take high drops.

I haven't started training parkour skills yet. I'm focusing on building up my strength and stamina to the point where I will be maintaining it high in about 6 months. Once I'm in maintenance phase I'll dedicate part of my exercise time to slowly building skill proficiency for parkour. So in a skill sense, I'm an utter neophyte (ancient Greek for noob) in a physical training sense, I have 8 months of focused, whole body, weight-training and intermittent running. I've been working out using different techniques, strategies, and philosophies for years, but now I'm consolidating it all into my training. I've been lookin at parkour for years, but only started making strides towards parkour since May.

@Ben: While you're working on getting in shape, I'd also recommend to keep up on your roll. They're easy enough to do indoors (I do them in my apartment building's hallway) and it's one skill I never want to get the least bit rusty, as it has saved me so many times.
Keeping your roll perfect makes learning more challenging moves much easier as you have a lot less to worry about in the injury department.
Just my 2 cents.  :)

I'm only 15, and I've been reading about parkour and freerunning for about a year or so. I'm finally going to leave ballet, and begin parkour. I've been determined to do so for too long. I'm trapped at home in a pretty shitty living situation, so the most I can do [indoors] at the moment is rolling. Any help that can be given is VERY much appreciated :]

Nice to see so many new people!

Welcome to the Ohio boards. I live in Florida now (Air Force), but I'm stoked to see the activity kicking up pretty quick around here. If you guys are looking for placing to do fun stuff, start by heading over to a college campus. There's always a lot of good places to practice.

Just started, and feel very strongly about devoting to this. My local area kinda sucks, as there is not much to work with and not much unguarded by very bored cops. If I'm lucky, I can find a group with a little experience and can leach lessons off them. But until then, I'm on my own and the path is clear. Only choice now is how to traverse it.

Wave87- It's pretty easy to start doing parkour. Just go on youtube and look up some parkour tutorials to get you started. There are some really great ones out there. So just go out there and try it. Have fun training and good luck. If you have any questions or need help with anything just post it on here. There are many amazing people who will help you out. Too bad you don't live closer to where I live otherwise I'd invite you out to train with us. Lol.

What days are good for you: Work Schedule varies but I have time every day.

How's it going Kyle and... Kyle? Glad you two could join us. If you two have any questions about the Ohio scene, feel free to drop me a line. If you're looking to progress, APK has some great tutorials, Youtube has some, or you could always do it the old-fashioned way and train with a nearby group. Don't know where one is? Awesome, I'll help locate the nearest group to you. Even if you can't go every week, just the boost that training with live people brings is astounding. Stay in touch. You can reach me on here or through Facebook... I'm on one of those two avenues at least every couple of days.
