Title: Leaders Unite-Introduce Yourselves.
Post by: Stevie Leifheit on February 11, 2011, 02:59:26 PM
In an effort to help teach, give pointers, and instruct each other on how to create and maintain an active and healthy community, Alec came up with the great idea for this forum. So I think it'll be helpful if we all were familiar with each other. So give us some basic info on who you are, where you're from, and an other info you think we should know!

I'm Steve, I live in the wonderful goodness of Maine. I've been doing parkour for about a year and a half now. My community is still fairly small. I train with a few friends fairly frequently. I'm trying to enlarge my community by teaching a parkour class at a local gym.

EDIT: Also, you can find contacts through this list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlOp_D1mc_TOdDF0cnJYOFlWemx4NS1LbDVvT1I0ZWc&hl=en_US (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlOp_D1mc_TOdDF0cnJYOFlWemx4NS1LbDVvT1I0ZWc&hl=en_US) (Thanks, Matthew Willis!)

Hey!  I'm Shay.  I live in Connecticut, which is just pretty much all woods ;).  I started the community in my town, Trumbull, and teach a Parkour class with a couple of friends.  While I'm not the "leader of parkour" in our state, as I personally know people who are much more experienced than me, I love my cpmmunity amd am trying my hardest to "activate" the potential CT has in it :)

Washington reporting in.

Hey, I'm Matt. I run the Washington Parkour Forums, although they're almost a dead species and I'm too busy to look through them in depth anymore. I always try to help beginners get along their way because when I was a beginner, many helped me. I like to return the favor. Pretty much I'm the Washington representative on APK. If you've got any questions about the Washington community, feel free to contact me!

I wish there was a better option than me for Central AR, but it seems like most of the plans and jams in the area over the past 6 months have all been my brainchildren.  Surprisingly, we have a lot of people really interested in the art of PK/FR, but simply don't know how to even begin.  I guess all of the running through the woods with shotguns has it in our blood. ;D

Central Arkansas, checking in.

Chad Zwadlo here from Minnesota.  I run the MNPK website (http://www.meetup.com/parkour-97/) as well as teach classes every day of the week at a local gymnastics school.  By the end of this year we will have our own Parkour/Freerunning/Martial Arts gym opened up here in the Twin Cities.

Brayden Saxon here from Savannah, GA area. I am the leader of a parkour team at my local college (Armstrong Atlantic State University) and teach a basics class to people in Rincon and on campus. I wouldn't call myself THE leader for my area since there are lots of traceurs off on their own and a class available to young teens at a nearby gymnastics gym that has only recently started. Anyone that is too old for the classes at the gym or simply can't afford it, generally ends up with me or one of the people that trained with me.

Lonnie from San Diego, California.

I've been leading sessions around the county for about 4 years and training Parkour maybe a few months longer... I'm a moderator for Parkour California and the California Forums here on APK. Aside from leading free outdoor sessions, I have 2 years experience coaching Parkour in a gym. Philosophy and History are very important to me as well as careful progression and sustainable training. I'm not a fan of the dilution that is saturating our discipline.

Currently I am working on the creation of San Diego Parkour as a non-profit organization and the launch of our new website which is still under heavy construction: www.sandiegoparkour.org

For now find us on facebook: www.facebook.com/sdparkour

Adam McC, from the Lehigh Valley!

I'm one of the founding members of Urban Current Clan, been training Parkour for about 5 years now. Trained for a year with Ozzi in Hawaii and helped him kickstart the HawaiiPK community as well as assisted him instruct Parkour classes at Crossfit Oahu. Then moved back to the Lehigh Valley where I founded the Lehigh Valley Parkour community by teaching sporadic seminars and hosting jams. Then I began to teach classes at Parkettes Gymnastics Center in Allentown, and did that for nearly two years, during which time I was lucky enough to go to Ohio and (thanks to ParkourHorizons) train with the Yamakasi and Parkour Generations, and then later returned to take the Level 1 A.D.A.P.T. Certification course. I now teach weekly outdoor classes, as well as seminars, jams, and private sessions.

Hi,
I'm NOS, from Mumbai, India.
I administer the Parkour Mumbai and Parkour India websites.
http://www.parkourmumbai.com/
http://www.parkourindia.net/

I've been training for around 4 1/2 years now, since the time I helped found the Parkour scene in Mumbai, which was one of the first few places in India to start getting active in Parkour.  I have been instrumental in setting up India's only Parkour gym where we have been running India's only Parkour classes for the past 2 1/2 years.
For the past two years, I've also been trying to organize and unite the disparate Parkour scene in the rest of the country, and have been working with other local community leaders in setting up our national community.

Hi, I'm Jacob. I've been training for around two years now. I lead a group of around 15 people in Grafton, Ohio. (Near Cleveland, small town) I also lead a parkour group at my high school. I've been fortunate enough to train with some members of the Yamakasi and Parkour Generations thanks to the wonderful guys from Parkour Horizons down in Columbus. I've been teaching parkour for around a year now and am currently trying to get more people interested and get in good standing with some authority figures around town. They see parkour as vandalism and I'm trying to show them the positive benefits of parkour.

I am working on getting the Y to sponsor juniors parkour & freerunning comatitions. We have classes connected with the local homework clubs so that the kids attending after school homework club get 2 free 1 hour classes, their grades improve and they get in shape by means of parkour....Win-win!
I'm also in the process of starting "slorunner freerunning", a parkour & freerunning group sentered around youth fitness, safety, training for longevity, and general PK&FR promotion.

Patrick Witbrod- Rolla Mo parkour.

I've been training consistently for 2 years on and off for around 3 or 4 years. I and Smaran founded Rolla parkour. A group that I hope will be able to fix stereotypes floating about campus started by the people that practiced there for months without my knowledge.

The're good people but they are gonna get people hurt. I'm working with there leader now and he agrees with me. So we're off to a good start. When they merge with us it will be about 15 people on a regular basis. Smaran, Bobby (the other leader) and I will be the only parkour teachers. The other people are mostly trickers that want to learn or people who have no experience what so ever.

Hi i'm Aero. Fewer know me as Ryan Fulmer. Been part of the San Francisco scenes since 2007.  Area Rep for SFPK.

I started the first SFPK Monthly Jams almost 4 years ago.  I was part of the founding BAPK group while I lived in the city.  Been coaching about 3 years in different programs since being handed my first class from Chris 'Kaos' Levesque from PKNA(<-before it ate itself).  I've been running the parkour program at Crossfit Marin for 2 years and have grown it to 4+ classes 7 days a week.

The LETHALbeef and I started www.facebook.com/ParkourConnections (http://www.facebook.com/ParkourConnections) in October 2010 to bring legitimate instruction and exposure to the discipline (aka insurance ;)).  We have been putting on demonstrations and workshops at local community events and schools since.  My dream when I first started parkour was to do a school assembly for elementary school children, right before recess.   Its been an awesome experience.

My latest obsession is traveling to the homes of other community leaders around the nation to see how all the different local groups function and exist. Really gives perspective on my own group and how we can improve or how to work through similar problems that have existed in almost every community.

If anybody out there ever wants to come visit the SFPK group or talk technique/conditioning or just talk ideas just shoot me an email Aero@parkourconnections.com

Alec have you ever trained with SFPK???  It looks like you are up in our area, Mattastic's SJPK atleast, so get out to a Monthly or come help coach The Beginner Class next monthhttp://www.sfparkour.com/forum/showthread.php?p=61333#post61333 (http://www.sfparkour.com/forum/showthread.php?p=61333#post61333)!!

Awesome Pat!

Hey Ryan. Kind of. I did attend the jams where Dan Edwardes did a session but nothing other than that with SFPK. The reason why this is happening now is that a lot of things are coming together in my life and I'm able to start restructuring it quite a bit. I was pretty inactive in parkour for a while for various reasons. Still training a little bit of this and that. I'm super excited these next few months, weeks even, to really get the ball rolling and accomplish what I've been seeking to do for years now.

Whoops, I guess I spend so much time working on local community stuff that I don't come on APK enough to see what's new going on. And Brett often has everything covered in terms of connecting with the wider national community...

In any case, I'm Albert Kong, AKA lethalbeef, currently an admin of SFParkour.com (http://www.sfparkour.com), formerly Area Representative for East Bay, even more formerly a local leader in San Diego PK with Lonnie when it was still part of PKCali. I run a weekly training session at UC Berkeley, organize the facebook group (Cal Parkour AKA Berkeley Parkour Collective), doing my best to create new leaders in that session, and participating in SFPK events. Several of us here are also working on building the new teaching programs, etc.

Nice to meet you all, looking forward to being more involved in this board and APK in general.

My name is michael baumann, (adopted) I have PK'd and FR'd since 2004. In 2012 i opened a gym and started offering classes. Currently i have around 6 students that are solid. The rest are off and on or only come in for open gym. im always looking for resources to help better myself and the service that i offer to my students. i want to watch them grow. Currently my class is ran out of a x-fit gym that has concrete/carpet floors and a padded sparring room in back. Couple of pommels and extra pads are mine but all the wood boxes and tires we use belong to the x-fit guys. Wed and friday we condition and train on various things beginner and advanced. sundays we have open gym. And as im sure a lot of you have seen. Not a whole lot of people are willing to do the work. On a typical wed/fri there is Me, a kid named kyle. and maybe 2-3 other ppl. sometimes just me. but sundays we usually get 5-15 people. I want to know many things
1. How do i get higher interest?
2. what plan would get us better equipment
2.b Are their grants or other funds available to an entrepreneur?
3. Are there classes or other structured designs to help train my guys?
4. What is a good rate to charge for group classes vs private classes?
5. And mostly im stuck on where to go next.
6. Save money, buy/build equipment, events, coverage, misc

Lots of things for sure and i appreciate everything that anyone gives me info on. I will be reading the threads that are on here in hopes to answer some of these questions.....

OH p.s. If anyone has simple/cheap to build blueprints for boxes and willing to send a copy please do. Can use all the help available. Thanks everyone. and hello of course think i might of missed that part

Hi, I'm Jonathan and I'm the head of our group in Memphis Tn.

We have a site at http://memphisparkour.com (http://memphisparkour.com) and through there you can find the facebook group where most of our communication happens. If you come to town that is the best way to get in touch.

I've done parkour since B-13 came out in 2006 so about 8 years now. We have just started to tech classes once a week, all the info is on the website (I'm not posting here in case it changes over time).

Thanks and I hope you visit us soon.
