Title: Lets go to Maui discussion
Post by: turtlekarma on June 08, 2010, 10:36:29 AM
I wanted to make a thread specifically dedicated to a HIPK trip to Maui sometime for this summer 2010.  Basically anyone who has time/can afford it please join in.  I'll be roughing it as much as possible to save money, so if that doesn't sound like something you wanna do then this might not be the trip for you.  I'm planning on 3-5 days depending on what people can afford and how much free time most people have.  It might not be PK specifically oriented, but I guess it could go under the category of a physically challenging vacation.

Discuss:
Who's going, and when would be best time to go
Deals people find on tickets
What you wanna do on Maui

My post, I'm going because its something I've wanted to do for a long time...meet gregg, shilo and the other guys of Maui HIPK.  And I've never had a chance to explore maui.  The best time for me to go would be beginning or end of July or late June.

Best price I could find for round trip tickets was $128 on Go....but I'd pay the $20 more for Hawaiian just cause I've had horrible experiences with Go in the past.

I wanna train with Gregg and the maui gang up there....camp on the beach, find some good trails to run/explore, do some diving, eat good food...idk could you ask for more?

Come today. Use your MN skills to put out the brush fire. 2300 acres so far...

Yikes! Does this happen often?

I never considered camping on the beach when I went there before, but it does sound interesting. I'd be worried about someone stealing your stuff when you wern't around, but maybe that's just cause here on the mainland, it would all be gone 1/2 hour after you walked away.

I doubt I'd be able to make this event, however. :'(

There are frequently big fires on Maui. Most of them are controlled cane burnings. These other ones happen about once a year. Last was in same area, about 6 months ago.

Maui's just a bit bigger than Oahu, with about 1/10 the people. It's less built up/ developed.
Plenty area I have never explored. Maui's newer, less eroded. Haleakala is 10023'.

Ryan said he was interested in abandoned places. There are a couple areas that were population centers during plantation days that are now deserted, plus small WW2 and older sites.

hurray for abandoned structures.  um hey gregg...do you have camping gear we could borrow while up there?  Or should I bring my own?  I was thinking of just bringing one of those one person mini tents that are somewhat portable.

Also could you recommend a good place to go pick up some groceries that's near by the airport?

There's a CostCo before the first major intersection ;D
Else, within 2.5 miles...
Walmart, Safeway, [Star closed?] for mainland chains

Down to Earth [can be pricey, good hot and cold food bar tho], or Whole Foods for health food [aint been there - heard it's pricey]

Ah Fooks has stuff you might not find anywhere else. I haven't been there since fire 3 yr ago.
Paradise Philipino market...

Camping stuff... my tent is on mainland? I'm not seeing it.

thanks gregg...I'm thinking as far as dates go, late july to early august is the target range.

Do weekends or week days work better for you?

Right now July 17-26 looks good, and early to mid August looks terrible.

THose dates look great for me, And I should just be regaining my mobility back ( but none of my strength)

I have all the camping gear I need.

Ok! It'll be good to have you over, but we may need to modify some things a little... to make it more fun for you.

Dont worry about modifying anything.. If I cant hang its my fault.  I'm sure I can find something else to do.  But Im pretty sure by those dates I should be around 75%.  Able to do most of the activities just back of the pack

alright...we have another taker.

My dates ideally would be July 18-22st....I'm going to go request off for those days today

Derek - actually better to have you be at front, setting pace. Others can hang back, try extra tricks, whatever... because they can catch up.

Hmmm... Im starting to second guess myself..   Im not much of a parkour guy, I just like to play around... But i dont think i will be able to any parkour, just some jogging around with my camera and witnessing on the fun.   But having people wait around for me while I "catch up" really hurts my Alpha pride. I dont like that thought.

It would be cool if an itinerary is put up. So that I can know what I will be able to participate in.

I'm still flying over there, I need to see more of the islands before I move.  If I cant hang then ill probably just go on my own one legged adventures

But having people wait around for me while I "catch up" really hurts my Alpha pride. I dont like that thought.

That's why I have injured people, camera op, etc be the pace setters if the goal is to have fun as a group. Nobody gets left behind, nobody has to catch up. The pace is more constant, breaks are shorter, bla bla bla.

Right now, you are the pace setter. I know you like to dive and take photos. Sightseeing, of course...
Combine that with Ryan camp, explore trails, dive, eat good food, explore abandoned places...

I've got a new copy of "Maui Revealed" and will make a list of suggestions...

Ozzi bday = July 20. Tuesday?
Ryan listed the week, not the weekend. The weekends are still mostly free on either side.
Jesse - bummed you won't be here. I've only trained with a couple guys from BAPK, not San Diego.
Title: Re: Lets go to Maui discussion
Post by: Gregg HIPK on June 23, 2010, 03:58:15 PM
Easiest way to do Maui is by areas: For ease, I'll just call them North, South, West, central, and upcountry.

NORTH: Paia, Ho'okipa surf spot, Haiku, road to Hana, any of the falls along the way [Twin Falls, Blue Pool, etc], Waianapanapa State park [caves, black beach, legal camping], Hana [Hasegawa's store, red sand beach tho the footing is a little treacherous at places], Kipahulu [Ohe'o Gulch/ 7 Sacred Pools for easy to moderately strenuous hikes [on path], also legal camping]

EAST: Many rental car companies will not let you drive past Kipahulu. That's why no listing for East. Drive far enough [around island] and you'll get to upcountry. The road to Hana used to be a hell drive. It's still twisty, and 1 lane in places, but road quality is much better. I think they have guard rails now. The road past Kipahulu was repaved and restriped by drunk people. It's twisty, hot, dry, with little to see. There is 1 store, no gas station. Little margin for error. I know people who drive to Kaupo to spear fish ulua. I don't have that kind of free time.

UPCOUNTRY: This is different than Oahu. You can reach upcountry from Haiku, Paia, or Central [or driving around back side of Haleakala] You can drive almost all the way to the summit. Entry fee for Haleakala Park is also good for Kipahulu [and vice versa]. Sunrise is COLD and can be very windy. Even in July. There is a visitor center, camping and hiking at Hosmer Grove, legal camping at various sites in the crater. There is water, but it's not potable.

Title: Re: Lets go to Maui discussion
Post by: Gregg HIPK on June 23, 2010, 04:48:25 PM
Other possibilities for Upcountry - I used to go Poilpoli. Legal camping there... I haven't been there since big fire many years ago. Redwood forest [non-native], a series of linked trails, including one [or 2] that go up to the summit area. Other attractions: supposed to be a zip line up there, Tedeschi winery [free samples], I'm sure I'm missing stuff.

WEST: Petroglyphs at Oluwalu if they weren't damaged by latest 6000+ acre fire. Lahaina [Huge banyan tree, tourists, ways to separate $ from tourists] Plenty of surf and dive sites along the way. Maybe Nakalele Blowhole if you feel like driving up that far. Again, rental companies may not let you drive much further than that. If there's another highway closure, that's the only way out, tho.

CENTRAL: Kepaniwai for some Lorin Ball inspired free running. Then drive further into Iao Valley for some easy [paved path] to insane level hiking. It's really up to you. There's plenty to do/ see close to parking lot.
Wailuku has some spots to jump. It seems the more people, the faster you get kicked out. Wailuku and Kahului have most of the stores, restaurants, etc.
Pu'unene for exploring WW2 airfield and other semi-abandoned sites

SOUTH: Once you get to Charley Young, all the beaches are nice to great. Past the resorts in Wailea, things start to get a little wilder again - but rich people have been building houses in Makena, and "No Camping" signs are popping up in places I used to camp. There are some nice snorkel and dive sites. Lava field. LaPerrousse Bay is the end of the road, but there's hiking [for miles and miles but no water]

I'm still a high probably.  It depends on

1) My recovery, I'm not suppose to be walking without my crutches till friday ( I stopped using them 14days after my injury( oops)). But I will find out if will even be capable of running ( VERY SHORT DISTANCES)  when I go to my physical therapy appointment on friday.
2) what the physical therapist says my limitations are.
3) whether or not you guys put out a solid itinerary
4) What I think my limitations are, and If your itinerary fits.

I probably wont buy the tickets until the 20th.

For sake of argument, let's say you can comfortably walk a mile on slightly uneven terrain, and after a rest, walk a mile back.

Itinerary is going to depend on planned camping location, and will also affect plans for the previous and following day. Full moon is July 25 so you should have good moonlight for any night activities.

THU 22: Arrive, get rental car, buy supplies. Enjoy Maui
FRI 23: SAT 24: SUN 25: MON 26: Enjoy Maui
TUE 27: Return rental car, fly home.

Drive to Hana, stopping along the way for falls, or swimming, Hana red sand beach, Waianapanapa caves, Hasegawa store.
CAMP @ KIPAHULU. Hike up to 200' falls. [Possible hike to 400' falls] Hang out at lower falls, cliff jumping as needed.

Upcountry: CAMP @ HOSMER GROVE. It puts you IN Haleakala Park, and gives you options for late night or early morning hiking.

The problems are the OTHER nights. I'm not sure where you can camp without a hassle. I know a lot of people used to camp/ fish SOUTH at LaPerousse Bay. I hope that's still a decent S side camping area.

I don't know WEST side spots at all. Lot of surfers set up tents by Papalaua, but I don't know if they camp there, or just use them for shade during the day.

CENTRAL the guide mentions Kanaha Beach Park as legal camping [$3/ person for permit]. At least it's close to the airport.

thinking of some minor changes to that itinerary...but for the most part that sounds cool gregg

Um buying tickets now so, let me know who else is coming so can talk about if we want to rent a car and share or huff it on the bus?

It's your trip. You SHOULD adjust it. ;D
Some people get bored of Haleakala summit in an hour. Others could spend days up there.
Some people love to hang out at the beach. Other people like shopping.
It's all just options.

Well, I tried to set up my trip to Maui in November today, but I ran into a small snag. The charge limit on my debit card was too low... DOH!

Went to the bank, and had that changed, but it won't take effect until tomorrow.

Plans are to leave here on Fri Nov 19 to be there about 9:15 pm or so, and leaving on Tues Nov 30th. (Also in the evening)

I'm probably going to do the sunrise on Haleakala Sat morning, since I'll be up anyway. (Same thing I did last year) I want to go see the volcano on Sunday, and as of today they still had openings, but we will have to see tomorrow. Sunday would be my 48th birthday.

The rest of the week is completely open. I'd like to get a lot of hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling in on this trip. Not planning on diving, though. Of course, it would be better if I knew someone there who could help me know where to go...  ;D

Sunrise is a good 1st day activity because you're still on MO time.
I'll check my schedule. Find out if we have classes then. Let my wife know...
I didn't realize you were older than me.

Diving - I only snorkel for fun. Never got into scuba or serious free-diving like Derek.
I know mostly S side spots. N shore is usually big surf in winter.

I didn't realize you were older than me.

Well, you must be older than you think, because we have discussed this many times, and you apparently have forgotten!  :P The convo went something like Gregg: "Good, you are now the oldest active guy who does PK on the boards." Frosty: "Well, I can't say what I do is actually Parkour, so it looks like you are still it."

Sound familier? LOL Of course, since your injury, I guess that makes Tim the oldest active now.

Diving - I only snorkel for fun. Never got into scuba or serious free-diving like Derek.

I dove last time I was out there, and it was great, but it took way too much time for the few hours you get to do it, and you have to be careful about elevation changes afterward, so it limits you a bit. I would like to do some free-diving, but no, obviously not as seriously as Derek, although I did practice a bit here. I have held my breath for 2 1/2 mins, well, once anyway. 2 mins several times. It's a good start.

I know mostly S side spots. N shore is usually big surf in winter.

I'll be staying in the same place as last time, down in Kihei, so that's fine.

Maybe there will be a little more surf on the south side this time, and I can try surfing! Last year there was no surf at all the week I was there.

Very cool! Looking forward to meeting you in person!

I forgot. Sorry. Mentally I was remembering Tim.

I'm still active. Never totally stopped. I had massive knuckle callouses from doing QM [without using the injured leg].
Now that I'm able to run again, they've faded. I am doing some small vaults. Plenty room for improvement, and I have to be careful not to overdo it.

I keep hitting a plateau with breathing. Not sure why. Is 2.5 min what you can do submerged?

http://omaui.com/ is decent surf report. Even if no S Side swell, there's usually something as you head out towards Lahaina [or N shore if it's small] For beginning, you don't need much. A fun board + a little foam's all you need to start. Now with SUP [stand-up] you can play even when it's flat.

Good to know you are getting healthy again!

No, 2.5 was out of the water. Derek commented on the "passing out and drowning" stories of people doing this alone, so I've avoided that.
Title: Re: Lets go to Maui discussion
Post by: Gregg HIPK on October 09, 2010, 11:35:12 AM
Passing out and drowning is a good thing to avoid. ;D

Coworker was telling me about an abandoned place he checked out. Guess it's pretty trashed, tho.
There was one clean area, but some drugged out guy was sitting there.
I keep seeing more and more abandoned military buildings from WW2. I'm sure there's a lot more I don't know.

I just spotted another place I forgot about on someone's flikr site. 5 year old photos, tho.
Ah. It's because the place was destroyed the year after. Oh well... looked dangerous... of course ;D

And which are the best location or hotel to stay?
