How to overcome the fear of flipping?
« on: April 30, 2008, 10:53:19 AM »
Alright so i can easily, with much confidence do a standing backflip on a thick, comfortable mat the school owns. I start freaking out when i try to do a backflip anywhere else but this mat, even on a pretty thick mattress! I know i can do it, there is just something in the back of my mind thats telling me "your funeral..." Is there anything i can do to just overcome this fear i have of breaking my neck? Even when i'm motivated, the moment i step up to do it, i have a second thought and back down....

I have the same problem. What I do when I try and do flips outside (which is not that often mind you) is have a friend spot me. After a few times at that, I've got enough confidence to do it on my own. The thing to remember is that if you do try it, repeat it.

If you can manage to do one on that matress your talking about, have a friend move the matress when your not looking, and you'll have the confidence of the matress, without actually using a matress. After that, you'll be 100% sure you can do one without a mat/matress. It would also be a good idea to have a friend or two spot you, just in case.

Good Luck

Best way to get over this fear is to have a GOOD spotter! Or so I've heard I still have yet to find someone that i trust enough to spot me...as my buddy who spotted me last time intentionally dropped me...so find a GOOD spotter and you should be fine.

ok well today is the day that i'm going to go out and try a backflip off a picnic table... it's funny because i taught my friend how to do a backflip, and he's already doing them off tables and benches and what not and yet i'm still sitting here watching him lol
but not anymore! i know i can do it if he can do it, today is going to be a swell day  ;D

If anyone else is having problems with back flips, get on a trampoline and warm up with a couple back flips, then do a back flip off of the trampoline onto the ground. the biological stopwatch in your head will time it for you, so if you don't bail on the flip, you will land fine. that's how i overcame my fear.

i could tell you what worked for me, it might not work for everybody.

with almost every single flip i learned, i started from high up, and worked my way down to the ground

more height gives you a hell of a lot more room for technique error, when your on a 4 foot ledge and you try a backflip ever if you have basically no understanding of good technique you can still make it around.

but don't be an idiot. train safley :)
