Hi fellow over 30's
« on: April 22, 2008, 02:23:51 AM »
G'day from Australia, nice to see a group of older peeps doing Parkour.

Keep training guys, no need to stop moving while we are alive :)

I'm 35 myself and have trained Karate since 85, Parkour has a very similar training philosophy and I find they compliment one another greatly.

As long as we train safely there is no reason to stop.

Here's some training I put together at the start of the year, nothing flash - just training, enjoy.

*waves* Hey Argie.

I'm going to be 32 on Friday, just getting into this. Have been doing kung fu myself for three years now and you're right a lot of these arts seem to have similiar philosophies. :)

Nice video.

As the Elder Statesman of the sight at 56 (or as I usually refer to myself in real life as an Advanced Adult), I totally loved the scope and scale of the video, especially getting a kick out of the reversed stair climbing on all fours.  (It somehow reminded me of something out of "The Exorcist".)

I also enjoyed the soundtrack.  Please let me know who it was.

Nice vid. It makes me think that at my age (only 31) that I can do this. I am just starting out (ith no real instruction and was starting to think that only kids were doing this. I too have had martial art training (26 years) and the philosophies seem identical.

Greetings all,
I just got hooked on Parkour about three months ago, been training locally (small town, not much here other than a college with decent architecture and a pretty nice playground), and actually attended my first jam this past Saturday (I was shooting photo and video more than participating though).  I took Kung-Fu for two years, run and bike regularly, lift weights occasionally, and have a very active 8 year old boy to keep me in shape.  At 37, I sure don't feel or act like it, which in my opinion is a good thing (most people think I'm around 24 or so).  I haven't been training hard-core yet, but I do what I can when time permits.  My son actually got into practicing with me at the park after watching me climbing under, over, and through just about every piece of equipment they have, vaulting rails and picnic tables, and working on precisions at home on our front porch.  Now when we go for family walks and such, he's climbing and jumping off of every porch, wall, and set of steps he sees.  It's good to see that kind of fascination about Parkour from an 8 year old's perspective, though even Sébastien Foucan once stated that you should view things like this, with the mind of a child.

I'll join the chorus, great video!  Just because of the height though I think I'd call those precision jumps between the white columns a trick.  ;)  I think 30+ traceurs can be just as physically capable as all those younger traceurs and this reinforces that!  Of course, applying a little more grey matter to PK and training is a must at this point...

I'm 33 and have actually trained with several other 30+ traceurs in the past month so don't feel all that out of place.  That said, I have yet to experience a jam where I'm surrounded by 15-22 yr olds so I reserve the right to feel old and uncomfortable later on.  :)

Ha ha!  Yeah, Cameron, you actually trained with at least one 40+ traceur this month!  My very first session with you and the others, I think we were all at least 30 (and I was the dinosaur at 45).  Old farts rule!

I'm jealous. I have yet to be younger than anyone at training (except for a couple of isolated instances at larger jams in other cities). Hopefully that will change, though. We have a 40+ traceuse maybe joining us tonight! :)

I'm 34, btw.

Ah, I remember 34.  Yeah, you would actually be kind of in the *middle* in some of our jams.  Maybe it's because it's been summer vacation and a lot of our younger members have been away.

That said, I went to a larger jam in Baltimore where the ages ran from 15 to 38-- and then there was me, the old man, at 45.  I think the average age was about 21, not counting me.  I would like to say I felt great because I was keeping up with the youngsters, but sometimes I *did* feel a little out of place.  The kids were great, though, they went way out of their way to make me feel welcome.

It seems the number of us who are past 30 is really starting to increase :)

I'd love to see some 30+ tracers over here in Holland. I'm still the oldest with 35 and than there are the mid twenties. Only one other 36 woman but she on and of with training.

Lucky for me, my first group experience was with MadParkour, and Muse_of_Fire is approximately the same age as my sister, so I felt comfortable enough with her.

Just started Parkour officially 2 months ago.  I was doing it as a kid but didn't know what it was called.  I just called it 'escaping'.  Went to an adult open gym in Carlsbad, I'm 36, and started practicing some moves.  Before I knew it I was doing standing backflips, kongs, running front flips from ground level and from height within a few weeks.  I love this type of training and am very happy with the website and WOD.

That's a great video. I just started a couple months ago. But its been to cold to go outside much. I'll be 34 in april. Its good to see so many here our age.  I was in Kenpo karate for about 7 years when I was a teenager. But what's funny I'm more healthy now and in better shape now then I've ever been.

I've been without a gym since I moved to another set of apartments at the beginning of the year. I found some excelllent exercises via this website that I've been replacing weights with and have been having much better results and a better physical build without some of the problems that weightlifting causes. I'll probably get more deeply into the actual flips etc as my body finishes fine tuning..but I like gymnastical bs much better than the weights.

I'm 32 and a mother of three. I love parkour, and haven't noticed anything age-related holding me back. Last month I trained with Laurent Piemontesi of the Yamakasi and he was AMAZING...despite being years older than I am, he ran me and every young gun there into the ground!  ;D
