A sportsmans way to conditioning good ankles...
« on: April 11, 2008, 05:04:26 PM »
Recently i have been around a lot of people with weak ankles specificaly as Amir had mentioned at the Orlando jam. here are some great methods to conditioning not only the ankles but the calves and knees too:

- Try barefoot running in a nature enviornemnt first then build up to concrete bf running.

- Dont be afraid to pick up a skateboard once in a while i used to skate and trust me it gave me stronger legs to endure the trials of parkour training.

- Instead of walking on the street or sidewalk, walk along the grass especially thick grass it will build stronger calves for sure.

- Try training other diciplines like hurdeling, track laps, skateboarding etc good for balance and most importantly stronger legs all around including the quads!

- It also wont hurt to wear heavier shoes once in a great while. After you get used to the weight move back into the lighter shoes and there will be a difference in leg strength at least a small one but it counts.

Thanks for reading and be sure to apply at least a few of these methods if you want stronger legs guys!

Hey man I really think this is great getting some conversation going. But I must interject...

Barefoot running is great and I'm a huge advocate for it, but concrete is asking for trouble. All it takes is one tiny pebble that slips your attention and you're out. Stick to soft surfaces or tracks please.

Eh...skateboarding...I'll stay away from this. Everyone has their opinions

Walking on the grass is a good suggestion. Don't expect any crazy gains from this though, it's just a more natural type of "exercise" that has the ability to put uneven forces on all our ankle stabilizing muscles providing an environment for balanced muscle growth.

Quads are hardly our worry. A majority of people have great quad strength...what most lack is hamstring strength and develop knee problems and/or hip problems because of it.

If you want all around leg strength? Learn to squat properly. Ankle strength? Get a slack line....trust me.

I'm with Chad on the bf running..  I ask a lot of newcomers in my community to try just bf WALKING on concrete.  That actually helps a bit, too, as well as some barefoot exercises on the concrete that're slow and deliberate..  But running isn't the best idea.

unless you try to do double mode and you miss the pad and roll your ankle  >:(  :'(

better to do on metal pads which are about $250 or so for a good one
which is a good investment because the plastic ones break easily and you'll keep needing to buy new ones

I don't think so. Exercises involving toe lifts and walking on the heels of the feet (safely) will activate the tibialis anterior muscle which is a major target area for shin splints. Often times new/inexperienced runners begin running on an imbalance between the ankle flexors and extensors and when accompanied with improper form causes the foot to forcefully plantarflex which starts shreading the tibialis.

Balancing exercises that trigger all of the ankle stabilizers is the best way "prevent" the onset of shin splints. As for removing them, no. Nothing besides rest can do that.

Ballet classes.

She followed slowly, taking a long time,
as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.

sorry chad, its a myth that shin splints are incurable.  They are easily curable.  I've treated several of them successfully :), i probably could build a business fixing just those...

sorry, I'm not trying to sound obscure or arrogant :), Its one of my goals, to totally educate groups of people on how to fix shin splints.  Really quick fix (well, relative to living with them)

I was making a joke. Also, I haven't had shin splints since sophmore year in high school 5 years ago because of the previously mentioned changes to my running method.

Cheetaur, is this something you can enlighten us with or will it remain a trade secret?
