why is it that people can't mind their own business
« on: January 24, 2008, 08:45:15 AM »
i was asked to leave the community college that i attend full time by a rent-a-cop for vaulting over a wall outside the bookstore.  i was at least 25 feet from anybody else and yet some tool took it upon themselves to tell the guard that:
"there's some kid over by the bookstore jumping off the wall (5ft high, grass on the landing side) he could hurt himself"

$#!+

It happens, of course people, and especially the people that run the college, are going to be apprehensive about anything out of the norm. The best thing to do is just be polite, take some time and explain to the campus safety officer what you're doing.

Check out this thread [ http://www.americanparkour.com/smf/index.php?topic=2948.0 ], which has my experience with pretty much exactly the same thing. Hopefully you'll be as lucky as I was!

Please don't spread that around. We all need to do our best to promote ourselves as safe, lively, and respectable people. I know it was probably a joke, but even if it were an old lady you should be respectful to her, to the "rent-a-cop" and to the people who own the college. There are many threads around these boards describing different successful ways to go about ridding the "reckless" image we have, and it all starts with maturity and respect.

I agree +1 as well.

explaining what your doing, and being respectful about it, is the only way to get a good image for it.
Talk to the college administrative board about it, and explain it to everyone that comes and talks to you about it.

Also don't call them rent-a-cops. Many of them have previous police work experience, or military, etc., etc. They like to be called rent-a-cops just as much as you would like to be called a brainless, drugged up teenager with nothing to do and no job. Respect them, and they'll return the favor.

+1 for schuby as well. respect. it's what make us different from the rest.

I agree with the respect thing and yeah I was only kidding about the old lady joke. I respect authority and don't want to get a bad image for parkour either. I was once practicing at a school and was asked to leave and did so without a fight or argument. Haven't gone back since. Their premise, their rules. Luckily, the college campus I now use is much bigger and the bicycle cops prefer to just give us weird looks than confront us about what we're doing. I guess they figure we're just hyperactive college kids.

alright.  the rent-a-cop remark is indeed a little harsh.  she was really cool about it anyways.  i was just pissed about the anonymous person who thought it a good idea to "look out for my best interests."  i don't do drugs or party all the time, all my friends have moved away and i'm flat broke.  parkour is all i've got to keep sane.

you just have to move on.  I want to tell people to buzz off too, but authority should be respected, just try to explain what your are doing and you never know maybe they will see that its not bad and maybe not get mad at you.
