Hey guys i'm pretty new to Parkour, and i've been practicing my PK roll. On a soft surface, like a carpet, my roll doesnt hurt at all, its smooth and it feels good, allthough im not quite sure if its getting all the way to my left hip after i start on my right shoulder allthough its pretty close for sure.

but my question is that when i tryed it on a hard surface like tiled floors, i bang my should a bit and I can always hear the lower half of my back smack on the floor, theres  no pain in my spine, but im not quite sure what im doing wrong for my shoulder and my hip. Maybe i need to use my hands to aborb more and get to the backside of my shoulder more? im not sure.

But any help would be appreciated! :)

Thanks!

What you need to do is make sure your back makes a ball-like curve. "Slither" like snake, you should have some of that feeling ;D give me feed back when you try this :)

This video helped me a lot when I was starting to learn my rolls. I hope this helps!

Just remember, everyone has a different style or technique to rolling. It just takes a while to find one that doesn't limit your momentum and fits your body type/build.

Well i tried curling up into a ball like you suggested and my back doesn't smack into my floor as much, however my shoulder is still getting smacked and im almost positive that im starting it on the backside of my shoulder, also im not finishing the roll on my starting position like I should be =/.

And thanks for the video, but i have already seen it, i always watch it while practicing my roles. it does help alot :)

You need to use your arms to carefully make your shoulder touch the ground; you shouldn't be smacking it. And yes, the back of shoulder is fine, just make sure you tense it up when starting.

Getting your shoulder to roll gently is like practicing precisions. You get better as you practice.

How do you finish the roll?

I usually finish it like ozzi does in his video, with me left knee kneeling and mr right foot on the ground (i roll on my right shoulder). unless of course its on a hard floor

and thanks i will try that, your probably right, i probably just need to practice it more until it gets right, and yeah thanks for the advice, as soon as my shoulder isn't as sore ill get back to practicing it :)

hey guys I've been practicing and i can do it decently on concrete, but one problem im having that still has not gone away is that when i roll i think that it doesn't go from my right shoulder to my left hip, on concrete anyhow but it does on softer surfaces, it ends up leaning on my right side so it ends on my spine or not fully on my left hip. =/

As I see it, you're just afraid of concrete so you roll the way you think is the safest. Right?

STOP roll on concrete if you hit the spine. Instead, practice on something softer than concrete, but can still point out your rolling flaws. Try a hard or thin rug. DON'T transition right away to concrete; you don't want to end up with my spine. ;) (which is not a good spine, lol)

Yep, Hazim's got it. Use a progression. Go from grass to harder grass, or dirt. Go from that to a soft carpet. Go from that to a hard carpet. Find surfaces that are progressively harder, but step by step. Anytime you feel a problem, take a step back and work it out. Good luck.

I see what your saying, but the thing is i'm not hitting my spine, im hitting my right side beacuse for some reason i can't get it to my left hip, its just i usually finish about at the spine, but never actually on it. do you know what i'm saying? of course i can't see myself roll so im just going on what i feel on my back. but there is no pain in my spine, if there was i would stop :). but yes, i feel like i need more momentem and that i'm not getting it because yeah i might be a bit afraid of the concrete. i can go back to the carpet/grass if thats what you guys think is best though.

Oh, I think I see what you're saying. If you end up at your left hip or near it, and with no bone pain, you're doing fine. Roll on a line on floor/grass and see if you stay on it; if you actually end up on your right hip, your path show be curved to the right (like how a coin rotates in a circle as it's rolling).

Personally, I've been thinking I roll on one side of my back all along, until one day I rolled on wet grass and saw my shirt had water marks across my back. :P funny stuff. Try that one day. :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention this: If you post a video here, it will help tremendously. :D

Bad advice. I'm not sure if you're talking about "pain" or "discomfort", but Parkour isn't hard body training, nor is it like martial arts. Putting pressure on bone spots that aren't designed to take pressure will deform them (just look at the bump on my back, it's ugly and still restricts my roll range). If you, Impulse, still do that, please consider what I said.

You should only roll on a mapped area on your back where there's muscle. That's why learning it takes time.

idk, ive never had a problem with it hurting when doing it but my friends always complain about it hurting at first, maybe their just doing it wrong. i learned to roll from right shoulder to left hip and it never hurt doing it.

That's good, but maybe you learned while wearing a hoodie? Try rolling topless or with a t-shirt. They might have gotten used to the pain, like I did.

It's all good man, just make sure they check their backs for bumps or anything. If you bend your back, a bump will be obvious. Just wanting traceurs (or freerunners like yourself) with happy bones. :)
