Try having your friend do very small sorts of leaps. It might seem silly, but have him jump over one of those concrete car stoppers in a parking lot. He'll be able to clear it easily, then just move on up. Try setting up cardboard boxes and having him jump over them. Once he's used to getting over the obstacle completely, get maybe a low bench, or something low and have him jump over it again. Next have him stand on one side and put his hands on the object and jump over.  Have him do that a few times then try it running. Baby steps. :)

I had the same problem with persicions and still do to an extent. Start out with shorter ones, and at ground level to get more and more confident, like trying to persicion the parking lines in the lots and get his technique down. If something looks bigger than I'm used to I always like to try it out at ground level first. Then just work your way up. As for the thought of getting hurt, that's just where confidence comes in and knowing what you can do. And basically just working to over come that mental block.

As for Vaults, I'd say go with what Nom said. Lol

I had confidence issues when I was starting too, and it took until I was more comfortable with my body as a whole that I could start doing different techniques. Rail prescisions took me a particuarly long time. My advice, let him run and jump and do what he can do, then he'll naturally want to do more after a while.

I have the ONE TWO THREE method. Although, I make myself go for it if I do the one two three method...I only use it when I know I can do it and am just to scared.

dont try to push him to do anything he's uncomftorable doing that is when somebody gets hurt, just let him jump around his skill level obsticals and he will naturally get better.

As I said... Only if I know I can do it.  Everyone knows they can do a lot of things but they don't do it.  It is the technique I use if I know I'm just being a looser about it.

like others said, have him try things you know he can do, and work up. Another thing you can try is let put him in situations where its OK to screw up. I believe it was Demon's tip of the month where it was suggested you use a piece of tape to work on underbars, is one of the best ideas i have ever heard, see if you can build on that idea to help his confidence

Something that I have been doing in my progression to bigger obstacles and new moves is REPITITION.  This is particularly true for vaults.  I find something I can do a particular vault over realtively easily.  Then I do it over and over and over again until I am really comfortable with it and don't have to think about how I am gonig to get over the obstacle when I am running up to it.  It may sound boring but it is effective in my opinion.  It is kind of like learning how to shoot a basketball or something.

Is the jump elevated off the ground to any extent? That used to be and still is something that unnerves me from time to time, the fact that I'm no longer a foot off the ground. I'm slowly working my way up to doing bigger jumps from higher up cause it is mind blowing sometimes. Like coastal said though just drill it, if nothing else at ground level, until his mad confident with the distance or until he can go past it.

So your friend is just weird about this jump. Find him another jump to do.  ;)

Not to get off topic but how do you make a underbar out of tape?

For me confidence is insanely hard to work up, but when I finally do I can usually make most of the "moves".  I know that physicaly I should be able to do a lot of things, but my mind just wont let me access my ability.  Anyone have any advice on how to work up confidence for parkour?
