You sleep how?
« on: December 04, 2007, 07:53:42 PM »
Well i was responding to another topic about someones pain, and a thought occurred to me, If sleeping a certain way can cause back pain, is it possible with the rest of your body? Like hip and shoulder problems on the same side? And what about sleeping on your stomach? (not to mention neck pain)

any thoughts?

(oh and im thinking about getting a weight set for xmass, should i get one or should i just do pushups with my 8 billion textbooks on my back??)

I don' know too much about sleep and pressure points, but I do know there is alot of exercises that can be done without weights. However if your getting them free...then  ;D

Yes, you can mess yourself up during sleep.

Usually when you do it's not a freak injury though and you just messed up something that are already slightly messed up or exacerbated something structural that was already degrading. For example, poor posture + sleeping on your side can sometimes lead to shoulder impingement.

Anyone ever sleep in a hammock?
Most people find them uncomfortable because of how they end up in the hammock.. but you gotta crawl in it and position yourself.. aside from that.. most comfortable sleep ever...

Hak, how did I know you would reply when someone asked about a hammock.

The way I usually sleep is I lay on my back for a while so it can adjust, then roll over and sleep on my stomach.  Not sure if that's healthy or not, but it's how I've always slept.  Everything else just feels weird.

most people sleep in a position that makes their problem worse.  chicken or egg deal.

do not sleep on your stomach.  here's why.  your neck is turned to one side, this means that while your sleeping, your muscle's relax.  your muscles protect your ligaments, if your head is turned to end range while you are sleeping, it stretches your ligaments.  If your ligaments are stretched out, your neck becomes unstable, and therefore, less force can do MORE damage.  WORST place to do it too, neck is the most important place in the spine, because that's where all the nerves come out of your brain.

You are making yourself prone to injury if you sleep on your stomach.

hammock is also bad, it reverses your spinal curve in your neck and lumbar spine, this causes tons of postural problems, won't go there now.  no time

I usually sleep on my back. Got used to it, and it's good now. I would recommend doing this.

Used to sleep on my side, and I apparently did it too much while I was growing that my left clavicle is more rounded than my right which warped my left shoulder physiology a bit. Kinda sucks.

actualy when i sleep on my stomach i curve my arm around my head and place my face down into my elbow, making it unnecessary to  rotate my head.

guess i removed the neck damage factor ^_^
