knee help
« on: November 11, 2007, 08:53:35 AM »
my knee has been feeling stiff for about 2 months now.

its kind of wierd: when i try to bend my leg (squatting motion, i guess) it gets kind of stiff and feels uncomfortable.

when i jog, i expierience discomfort, similar to when i try to bend it.

i've looked at my knee, and sometimes it does looks swollen, and sometimes it looks perfectly fine.
yesterday, i was playing football. i sort of juked to the left and felt a really sharp pain, and it hurt REALLY bad when i tried to bend it. thankfully that pain is gone now.

i have no idea what could have caused this, haven't had any major accidents recently or anything.

if it means anything, its my left knee  :)

any ideas?

Get it looked at by a sports doctor/PT... try not to do anything on it that causes pain (and if it does stop immediately).

the sharp pain was probably a minor sprain.  Your ligament probably just get stressed in that motion.  This is once again usually caused by weak muscles.  Your muscles are your first line of defense, if they fail to protect the joint, the ligaments are next.  they are backup.  I would suggest doing a lot of muscle work around the knee joint, especially massaging on the back of your knee.  To do that, bend your knee while sitting, and get your thumbs right in what is called the popliteal fossae, and rub the heck out of that are, then try it.

a minor sprain? phew thank god, i thought it might be arthritis.
so the reason why i feel stiff is because my muscles failed to protect my knee joint, resulting in my ligament protecting the joint, and the ligament got stressed?

and, erm, what exactly is the popliteal fossae  ??? i google imaged it and no helpful diagrams there  :-\
and by strengthening the muscle around the knee joint, do you mean the hamstrings aswell?
one more question: is rubbing this popliteal thingy the actual exercise or just to massage it, and if it is just to massage it what can I do to exercise the muscles there?

sorry for all the questions, i just really want to be sure what you mean, and what i'm doing.

thanks for all the insight.  :)

haha, yeah, i can almost guarantee that its not arthritis ;).  your knee feel stiff probably due to inflammation, and muscle spams.  The muscle spams prevents proper lymph flow or in other words, removal of metabolic wastes.  You muscles failed to protect your knee probably due to lack of training, or even because of foot/hip/SI joint problems.  They failed to fire, so your ligament took all the stress, which damaged the ligament.

the popliteal fossae is right where your knee bends on the back side of the knee joint.  The hamstring tendons make a outside and inside border for the fossae, so just stay in between those to tendons right in the knee joint.  This rubbing this is just a massage, to stimulate that lymph flow and promote healing.  If you want, you can rub out your inside and outside quads, or front thigh area.  For exercises, squats are fine, but just make sure you rub out this before and after working out, icing afterward for 20 minutes (cover with thick towel, you just need chilling, not acute icing).  Passive motion, or moving your leg around in its full ranges of motion by using your arm to move your leg around so that the muscles around the knee don't contract will also promote healing, up to 20-30 percent faster according to some stats.

let me know, gl

ah ok i understand the popliteal fossae thing, plus i found a diagram.

so massage the popliteal fossae, use my arm to move my leg around in a passive motion w/o contracting muscles, and if i workout, massage before and chill for 20 mins after.

cool. i probably wont go to the gym and workout the legs until it fully heals, but just in case: when i put the ice and the towel on, should i put it on the front of the knee or on the popliteal fossae?

thanks a bunch for all of the help. +1

More ROM is fine, don't massage too much though, a few times a day max

wing chun chain punches are not cardis... anyway... running is fine, but i would decrease the amount of it.  you want to remove the level of microtrauma to the area.  instead, swim, or find another cardio, you can move the knee, just find something low impact
