traceur musicians?
« on: October 11, 2007, 11:26:45 AM »
Hey, I was wondering if there are any traceur musicians out there besides me?
How do you manage to train for parkour, if for example you have a concert coming up. For example, I have been practicing for this concert tommorow and realized i have only been able to practice parkour once or twice the whole two weeks.  How do you balance the two passions?

music is hopefully going to be part of my job officially in the next few weeks.  yes, i'm passionate about music.  that's largely why i train for Parkour with gloves; i want to protect my hands so i can still play.  i train and condition when i first get up, and once in a while in my free time or on a day off.

im actually have been thinking of training lots on rough surface to create callouses on my fingers for bass playing. hmm, i guess if i got up early and trained immediately before school that could work.

the best way t build callouses for your instrument is to play your instrument.  that's how you get the right callouses in the right spots and how you build the proper hand strength and endurance.  also, push ups on your fingertips help for holding down tricky chords.  :)

I train Parkour three or four times a week, and I practice playing three or four times a week. Just set aside four hours a day for one or the other, or both.

I do a lot of conditioning in 15 minute blocks. I try to use PK almost every time I'm outside walking around. Even if it's just a precision to a crack on the sidewalk, it helps.

i'm a musician too!  i'm a music education major at school, and that generally that takes priority over parkour.  i'm usually only able to fit two or three long (all-afternoon) parkour sessions in one month, but i do shorter conditioning/strength/stretching sessions almost every day.  even though i would like to progress faster at parkour, i've realized that i need to fully take advantage of the faculty here for the next few years.  i have the rest of my life to get better at parkour.

ditto what animus said.  maintaining a strict and regular practice schedule is key to getting better at anything.

thanks for the suggestions, although the most important one of maintaining a strict schedule is hard for me because, when a concert comes like it did last night i just didnt have time to practice parkour at all, i am also mildly terrible at maintaining strict schedules, im not sure why.

the best way i think is to combine the two. I play keys in my band www.myspace.com/lastfastaction and weve had some big crowds, sometimes over 1000 people. we gotta get them pumped some i do a lot of parkour on stage in the middle of songs or inbetween them.  You can throw out all sorts of tricks, i usually do some keyboard handstands. its easy cause im not attached to a guitar. ive been playing for years and find plenty of time between training and practicing for shows. ive met lots of traceurs like moses and hak who were also in bands.

nice idea, i wish i wasnt attached to a bass although the last show i had, i did look kind of like some strange acrobat, half of me was painted blue the other half red, and for the first half i was in a blue jumpsuit. im just curious but how long have you been doing music and parkour?
