Hitting the Road (not literally)
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:09:06 PM »
In two days I'll be heading off on my great adventure.  I have no set itinerary right now.  No car, little cash.  But I've got itchy feet and nothing tying my down.  It's time to take that road trip that I've been dying to take since I graduated college.  It's like I need to get it out of my system while I'm still young and foolhardy.

Thursday I'll be arriving by train in Kansas City.  The rough plan is to spend a few weeks there, visiting friends and such.  If you're in the area, I'd love to get together for a jam.

After KC, I have my sights set on Minneapolis, Socorro, Denver, Salt Lake, San Fran, Reno, and various places in Canada and Wisconsin.  Those are all the places where I currently have family and close friends.  I'm up for visiting other places, too.  I have two goals in mind for this trip:  1) spend time with people I love, and 2) do a lot of soul-searching.

Of course, jamming with fellow traceurs would be a close #3... ;)

This is just a heads up.  The KC/Chicago area will be my "base."  That's where my stuff is and most of my family and friends, and that's where the cheapest flights and trains are available.

If your travels take you to Rochester, NY, I have the most comfortable couch in the state.

Best of luck, stay safe, and I hope you find your... soul?

Yeah, it ran away again.  Darn thing.

And thanks for the couch offer.  I'll keep that in mind.

Denver is a great city you'll like it here (granted you get here :)

so how do you do a road trip with no car and little cash?

Did perpetual happiness in the Garden of Eden maybe get so boring that eating the apple was justified?”

Well if you do get to Denver, throw down a post on the COPK forums. We hold weekly Denver jams, and I'm sure we could change the schedule a bit to suit when you're getting here(if you get here). It would be awesome to have an out of town traceuse at a jam. Also, we have weekly Boulder jams and Conditioning, and lots of open gyms. Very active PK community. Ah, and I almost forgot the Colorado Springs jam.

so how do you do a road trip with no car and little cash?

It's actually cheaper to take public transit than to cover gas, wear-and-tear, monthly payments, insurance, etc.  For example, Amtrak between Chicago and KC is only about $50.  That's almost half the cost of gas AND it's a couple hours faster than driving.  Or, I could get a flight from Kansas City to Denver for $40-$60.  Again, that's obviously cheaper than driving.  It's all about knowing where to look for the best deals.  I'm a missionary, after all.  :)  I've had lots of travel experience-- and all of it low-budget.  And I can always stop somewhere for a while and get a part-time job.  I've done that before, too.

It seems as if all road trips head west. Let me know if you plan on heading towards DC, we are itchin for a reason to jam :)

You know, I realized that, too.  I just may have to add DC to the list.  I've never been there.

Well, here's how it looks after one round of packing (minus the guitar).  I swear my bag is bigger than I am... But it's really not that heavy and it's not "stuffed."  Still... I'm re-packing today and leaving more behind (hopefully).  I'm glad I at least found a small, light sleeping bag.  That saves a ton of room.  And most of the weight is from my rollerblades.  I just can't bring myself to leave them behind...

you could try to use the parkour community as a network for travel, coaxing various traceurs to drive you to some nearby town where some traceur could pick you up and drive you to some other nearby town. i wonder if theres enough of us to get anywhere youd want to go. if your travels come through jersey i've got couches to spare.

however unlikely that is, because your itinerary seems devoid of east coast love.

Hey, you should plan on hitting up Denver on a Friday, and just spend like the whole day downtown and at the ever so famous Cat Fountain!!!  Cause every friday we have a jam at Cat Ftn. from 5-7 in the evening.

That sounds like it'll be awesome Laurie.

Makes my hike on the AT when I graduate next year seem insignificant.

Hah, amazing. You can go just about anywhere in the country, and someone from these boards will always be fully willing to house you for free. GOD I LOVE APK! I may have to take a road trip to fully utilize this hospitality.
