Matthews Log
« on: September 09, 2007, 03:14:33 PM »
I figure I should start one now...As a personal motivator. I will update it regularly, if I find it helps me.

Right now my goals are:
One arm chinup with each arm (both sup, and pro)
Dipping my bodyweight
Muscle up
Dragon Flag
L-seat, V-seat and Manna
Solid Handstand
Handstand pushup, and clapping handstand pushup.
Handstand press.
Back Lever
Front Lever
Planche
Circles/Flairs
Good pike
Splits (center and side)

I have a long way to go...But I can feel my progress, so it's all good.

I weigh 160 pounds, and am around 5'10'' (give or take a inch)

So far I am doing triples of weighted chins at 30-35 pounds,
Triples of dips at 20 pounds (may hold off for a while and do normals to build up shoulders first)
Working with my L-seat sporadically...
Working on my handstand sporadically as well...
Working on most other strength skills off and on as well....lol
stretching nearly every day for a half hour or more.

Right now my short term goals are chinning more and working myself into more and more consistent work out routines.

I know this log is a mess..But it's more for me then anyone, and I don't need it to be pretty.

Matt

Today was good,

Did my dips at 25, and my pull ups at 40 (next week gonna go for the big 45 plate). Gotta work on my top lockout more, my strength drops off right there. I have a weight belt, well a belt I can use as one...Not really sure what is was for...Some safety belt for iron workers or something...Thats nice, as now people don't give me a funny look when I stuff plates into my backpack.

I found a gymnastics class, that I go to twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday. This means I am gonna start fleshing out my gym days a lot more, since gymnastics really burns me out. I like this, because I always feel like doing just dips and chins, and a few skin the cats, along with stretching as unsatisfying, for the 6 dollars I pay.

I may also be getting into Break Dancing...Which will be fun, and complement the other things I do.

So, progress on my goals so far is:

Handstands: WAY BETTER, I can now hold them good enough to start attempting handstand push ups...Gotta solidify them a bit more though.

Dips: Now at 25, and my shoulders are seeming to be conditioning well, as it no longer feels uncomfortable.

Pull ups: (pronated and supinated) are at triples of 40, I am feeling stronger with those every day. Gotta start working in other things besides concentric movements (Need to do top lockouts, and some negatives, to change it up a bit)

Planche: I can finally hold a tuck Planche for a noticeable amount of time...Did a few ten counts today...granted...fast ten counts...but I am working my way into it. Just trying to have fun with it...Went for a total of a 30 count today.

Front Lever: Can hold tuck lever for a decent 20 count...did a total of a 60 count today...Again, just having fun with it for now.

L-seat: Working off an on with it right now...Starting to get where I can hold it for a 3 count or so...Right now my main goal is just getting to work on it consistently...Like I am trying to do with Planches and Front Levers

Pike: Getting way better, now I can grab my toes (Like really grab them, no finger loop thing...Woo!)

Splits: My center keeps improving, I would say I am about ten inches away, when stretched out. My sides are around the same.

Muscle ups: I can do them now, if I break form and pop one arm first...Working on getting that out...But mostly just relying on my weighted chins and dips to improve them for the time being.

Other Notes: My left elbow seems to give me some trouble...I am going to work on conditioning it more. Other than that, my biggest concern is making my workout (beyond chinups and dips) a lot more consistent.

Matt

Hanging leg raises: not really working on them to much, beyond playing with them now and then...Flexibility isn't there yet, getting closer though.

Yesterday gymnastics annihilated me...I was shaking by the end of it. But it's all good, because I am making a lot of progress.Todays workout was a lot better than I had thought. I have felt crappy all day, but I went into the gym, and did fine making progress with that trouble with topping out on my weighted pull ups...That bar looks great from above...Took a light day on the dips, because my shoulders and elbows have taken a big beating lately.
Front lever progressions are coming along great, did a 33 count and a 24 count, then got my sixty with a 3 count. Planche progressions are getting better too...Did a 14 count and a 16 count, only going to a total of 30, because it is still hard on the elbows and shoulders for me. Was to tired to do L-seat today...Oh well, it was a good workout anyways

My Splits and Pikes felt better today too...Now I am touching my toes consistently. Yay.

I have also decided next week, though I will move up to the 45 plate, I am gonna do a recovery week, instead of doing 8 of 3, like normal, I am only going to do 3 of 3, or possible 4 of 3 for my weighted chinups and dips. And probably only twice that week, instead of my normal three...I really really need to take a break for a week...Starting to feel like I am outdoing myself. Hopefully after the week is over, I will come back even stronger.

I am also making a bunch of little changes to my workout after next week.

Didn't get to workout today, but I did practice my Tuck Lever, and Tuck Planche...Good news there, held the tuck lever for a 60 count, and the Tuck Planche for a 20 count. I am going to make sure that my 60 count on the front lever is solid, then I am gonna start working advanced tuck. Tuck Planche is also getting better by the day, soon I will be working towards my 60 count, since it doesn't hurt my wrist and shoulders much anymore. (not at all for like ten seconds).

Yesterdays Gymnastics where kinda poor, everything I did was sloppy, though I did land a front tuck once...With a springboard. On a good note, did AWESOME with my stretching that night.

Oh, forgot, I held my L-seat today for a total count of 15 (6,6 and 3)...Not much, but getting better.

So, my week off is over, I felt amazing after it, felt so strong.

Monday was supposed to be a full workout, but I tried going to the Gym at my high school in order to save money, and they ended up closing on my 7th set of pull ups...so All I did really was test my limits.

On a good note, not only can I do triples at 45, I also did 2 triples at 50! It burned me out though, and by the seventh set, I was at 40, and going down to 35. Either way it's an obvious improvement, and doing the big 45 pound plate is a huge boost in motivation, for some reason. Now I am dreaming of doing two...lol.

My Tuck Planche is coming along great as well, up to a 30 count. And I am now working my advanced tuck lever, which is up to a shaky 20 count. My front tuck and handsprings are getting closer every time I try...I think I will be landing them soon, also my back bend to bridges are really solid now, I am very close to doing back walkovers. Handstands seem to be getting better as well, though I had a few bad days with them, it seems like I am able to control them more. My L-seat is also improving, not sure if this makes sense, but now when I do them, I can feel the control, not just my head screaming at the effort. I can hold them for like a 10 count now, if I remember.

I got my split foot take off on my Kong Vaults down as well...Amazing difference, they feel so much better, and I got like another 2 feet...in one day....now I can do Kong Vaults longer than I am tall. Not to mention how much better it flows.

My flexibility also seems to be getting better...I can do center splits and sat on a cinder block (laid down so it is 8 inches high). My pike is also better...I can consistently touch my toes now...WOO

Yesterdays workout was decent, tried adding negatives into my weighted chin ups. It seemed to help a lot, even if only by making me feel stronger. I did them at 70 pounds, for a ten count..easily. Friday I am gonna try 90 pounds. After that I did 4 triples at 45 and 2 at 40. My front lever progressions are going well, did a advanced tuck lever for a 28 count. My tuck Planche ended up being two for a count of 25 and one for a count of ten. I also tried doing a push-up in a tuck Planche, failed horribly, so I am going to start doing pseudo Planche push-ups to build strength through the range of motion. I did one triple of dips at 35, but I didn't feel comfortable with it, so I did the rest at 30, still a improvement, so I am happy. Stretching went well, but nothing really big as far as milestones.

Monday was a cool workout.

I started off with my crappy warm up - Handstands...Great great improvement there, I can now control myself a bit, so I am holding them for five and ten seconds all the time. Oddly enough, walking around on my hands helps a lot.

Then I did my Planche progressions, held two tuck Planches for 30 counts. I can really feel the improvement in them, it's not even a struggle any more for the first 10-15 seconds.

Then I moved to front lever progressions, held the advanced tuck lever for a 40 count and a easy 20 count...gonna be moving to straddle soon. Woo.

After that, I did my weighted chin-ups, I have mixed feelings about my progress there, did three ten count negatives with 80 pounds, which felt GREAT. Then did my 6 sets of 45, which I struggled with...which is bad since it's my second or third week on them...but I figure since I have been having inconsistent weeks, that is the reason. Still got all six triples though, so I am content.

Now, here is what I really liked about my workout, I did a triple of dips with 35 pounds...Then I finally let myself realize that weighted dips don't really do much for any of my main goals...So instead, I ddi seven triples of handstand push ups against a wall...It felt great, normally I dread that part of my workout, now I can't wait to progress with it. I am hoping that in a week or two I will be doing 5 smooth sets of five, then I can start working freestanding handstand push ups.

I realized I forgot to do L-seats, so I skipped those...But it's all good because today I tried them and felt some improvement.

I then did my stretching, more steady improvement, nothing huge to mention though.

Today I had gymnastics class, my handstands are really improving in leaps and bounds, also my handsprings are steadily improving...We did some great stretching too, which felt good...More or less I just felt good after it, no huge leaps in skill though.

Now for the big thing of my day today...I attempted a advanced tuck Planche...and held it for a second...Now I know they are possible...can't wait to progress to them in a week or so.

I have hit a sticking point in my training...I am STILL at 45...But, oddly I did a triple with 55 the other day...Then the rest of the workout sucked.

The only thing I am really happy with is my center splits...they are getting way better.

My static holds seem better and worse at the same time...I am still holding advanced tuck for 40, but now it's a slow solid count, and a solid hold...which is good...my Planche feels solid, and my counts are solid...but they are only 20s...My L-seat feels good and bad, depending on the day.

My handstands are getting better, and my handstand push ups seem to be improving...

I guess I am doing better...but nothing feels like it's moving like it was, in huge leaps and bounds...oh well, I guess I just have to keep pushing.

So, I got out of my slump...only to get injured.

First, the good news.

I am doing my triples of chin ups at 50 pounds now, and feel like I can go up to 55 and even 60 very soon. Also, my HSPU against a wall are coming along nice, pumping out sets of five. Everything else seems back on track and solid.

Now the bad news...I sliced my elbow open to the bone on a broken window last Wednesday...now I have 17 stitches (6 internal, 11 external) keeping my skin together...needless to say, I am out of it for a few days...I am hoping of getting back into the gym next week. Since my elbow seems stable (I did a L-seat the day after...) I think it wont be to serious...

Sorry about the lack of updates, lost all motivation with this rut I was in...

My elbow is now healed! Thank god! Still a bit sore, but usable...Whew.

But, I need to save money, so I am going to have to start working out at home, which means I am going to have to change parts of my workout, namely weighted pull ups until I get weights, and a better chin up bar (which now consists of two C-clamps clamped to the rafters of my basement). I am also going to change up my push workouts, since I want to start making more gains with my Planche, I am going to being doing pseudo Planche push ups, along with my handstand push ups...Not sure how I will work that.

This weekend I ended up screwing around a bunch with my cousin (we where doing stupid stuff to impress our girlfriends father (he is dating the older sister, I am dating the younger) it worked...lol) and found that I am alot closer to a back lever than I had thought, so I am going to start working that, which will be fun. Oddly enough though, I am also really sore, so I may start working it on wednesday.

For today, my pull ups consist of 5 sets of five on each arm of assisted one arms (in this case a hammer hooked over one of the C-clamps) I am going to change it up as soon as I get something better.  Since these are too easy for me...I am hoping I can find something as far as assisted, with a rope or something, but my grip strength is strong enough, that it doesn't make a huge difference to me whether one hand is on a rope or not..but experiment I will.

I also did 5 sets of 5 handstand wall push ups...Getting better.

Doing limited stretching (pike and straddle splits).

I am going to ease back into my workout...after such a long break. But it feels good.

Today I played around a bit more (easing back into everything, so just taking it slow, redoing my workout, and seeing what works for me.)

Today I did:

Two thirty count advanced tuck levers

One tuck Planche for a forty count, and one for a twenty count.

Three ten count L-seats

Five sets of five Pseudo Planche Push ups.

Alternating between 5 hanging leg raises (to 90 degrees, 3-1-3 tempo) and 5 ab wheel roll outs (from knees) three sets of each.

Feeling good today, feels good to be working it again. I am excited for my change of workout, because
I am thinking the extra volume of work on each of my holds will help me make fast improvements.

Today I did amazing on my Planche and Lever progressions, the boost to morale from that has made the whole workout feel wonderful.

I started off with my Font Levers, I did a 50 count advanced tuck! Then finished it off with a 10 second hold, to get my 60. After which I found I was able to hold my Straddle Front Lever for several seconds...I am going to start doing Straddles along with my Advanced Tuck.

Then I moved on to my Tuck Planche, and totally blew myself away with a 56 count hold, I felt wonderful at doing that...After so long on the Tuck Planche, the next progression is in sight!

The L-Sit was good, but not like my Planche and Lever, Did a 10 count hold, then a 15 half tucked for each leg and then finished with a 20 second tucked hold. I am just trying to increase volume in a hopes that it will lead to real gains with it.

After that I moved on to Assisted O.A.C. with a rope, did 6 triples with one hand 4 fists down the rope, then 2 triples at 3 fists...While I guess I am satisfied with this method for the time being, I think I am going to set up a pulley system as soon as I can. First I need to get Parallettes going though.

Moving on to my handstand push ups, I did two sets of five right after one another (was trying to see what I should be doing for sets, but then I fell...Ha ha.). I ended up deciding on sets of 8, which I did two of, then finished off with a set of 4 (my goal for the day was 30 total repetitions). Weird arrangement of sets, but I am experimenting right now, so I am more than content with what I ended up with.

Up next was Pseudo Planche Push Ups, I shot for 30 in as few sets as possible. Ended up doing three sets of ten, I'm happy.

Then I did Skin-the-Cats, which had me sorta 'worried' as I have never done them beyond just playing around, as such I shot for a target of 15 repetitions. Ended up doing three sets of five, better than I had thought.

By this point I am getting really tired, thank god I only had two exercises left or the upper body, the next one being hanging leg raises. I shot for 20 in as few sets as possible. First set was 8, then two sets of 6. I guess I am content, considering how tired I am.

Now my sadistic spree on my abs was near an end, I only had one left, ab wheel roll outs on my knees...I shot for 20, again. Did it with 4 sets of 5, but I was so tired, my form was shaky.

Now the last exercise I was at all 'worried' about, pistols...I shot for ten each leg, I used one hand for extra balance, since pressing up with one leg is still to hard to worry about balance yet. Did it with two very shaky sets of 5.

I ended my workout with toe raises until I felt a good burn (ended up being 40). Then one legged calf raises, until I got a good burn. (30).

Stretching went okay, my pike is getting better...Comfortably grabbed both feet and held for a minute...Splits are hurting though, so I am doing to take it easy with them for a while.

This was the best workout I have had in a long time, I finished it feeling absolutely beat.

Today I did:

30 Pseudo Planche Pushups
10 Tuck Lever Pullups
15 Hanging Leg Raises
15 Ab Wheel Rollouts
10 Pistols each leg
Toe Raises
Calf Raises

More just to keep in a rhythm than anything else.

Today my workout consisted of:

Tuck Planche - 60 count
Advanced Tuck/Straddle Lever - 60 count
L-Sit - 40 count
5x6 Assisted OACs
30 Handstand pushups
Calf Raises
Toe Raises
Stretch

Used my new Paralettes today, I love them. I also feel like the extra volume more my Planche and L-seat is paying off. I need to find a place to drill handstands though, I am close to getting them solid.

Yesterday I did my now 'normal' Monday, Wednesday, and Friday workout which right now consists of this:

Total of a 60 count for the appropriate progression for:
Planche
Front Lever
L-Sit

Then I do
5x5 or 8x3 sets (depending on how much time I have to workout that day) of Assisted OACs and Handstand pushups.

After that I do ankle conditioning (I want to make sure they are strong for next summers parkour training, hopefully stronger than ever). Which consists of Toe and One Leg Calf Raises.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays I do a different routine consisting of:

30 Pseudo Planche Pushups
15 Hanging Leg Raises
15 Ab Wheel Rollouts
10 Pistols each side
Ankle Conditioning

I feel that this routine will be changing constantly, since it consists of more high rep, low intensity work, I will be adding reps and sets often, and will make not of it when I do.

Now that I ahve described me routine, I will make tell the high points of my workout yesterday.

First off, I held a straddle lever for a five count, I feel amazing about this, but I need to make sure I work on opening my hips more, as they wher not fully open (my feet where about hand level, not too bad considering my torso is level with the floor...but not perfect either.

Then I attemped a Advanced Tuck Planche, and held it for about a second, I am going to start doing one of those before I do my regular Tuck Planche now, to help work it more...Same thing with my Straddle Lever. I also held the Tuck Planche and found myself count after I reached 60...Which is wonderful.

My L-sits are now at 15 counts.

Today I woke up with shoulder pains though, so I may not do my planche pushups, either way, I will post about todays workout after I do it.

Did my normal Tuesday/Thursday workout...Minus Pseudo Planche Push Ups. Went well, really killed my abs, and the lower body stuff was great, stretching wasn't bad either.

Today I added some more volume to my Tuesday/Thursday workout.

3x15 sets of Pseudo Planche Pushups
5x5 sets of Hanging Leg Raises
5x5 sets of Ab Wheel Rollouts

Also, I am now doing 50 squats every day, besides days I work pistols.

And my ankle conditioning is now
60 Toe Raises
50 One Leg Calve Raises.

Feeling some progress with everything. Right now my main goal has shifted to updating this log every day..lol

Yesterday I did my normal Monday/Wednesday/Friday workout, did well, considering I was already sore...Nothing particularly special though. Oh, for some reason my handstand pushups nearly killed me...I am assuming it from doing them all week.

Stretching was great, I am now less than 6 inches away from center splits.

I am getting my 45 pound plate today, so I will finally be able to do assisted one arms in a way I feel is effective.
