When I trained MMA (before Freestyle Parkour took over my world) we had to do several rounds of jump rope before we did anything. At first I hated it but I quickly saw the benefits. Now I use it every time before I do conventional exercises like pushups, situps, and bag work. It builds insane cardio abilities and it is better to do weights/ hard training when the heart is already pumping good.
I reccomend using 2 or 3 minute rounds. (2 minutes is what amateur boxing & kickboxing rounds are, 3 is what the pros use so we went by those.) I do 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest in between. I usually do 4 rounds of that. ( my first rounds slow the others as fast as I am comfortable with.) Then I finish it off with a burnout round where I go for as long as possible.
After you become comfortable with jumping for long periods without stopping you can focus on things like working fancy footwork and trying several rhythms.
I bought the cheapest plastic jump rope from Academy sports and outdoors for around 2 bucks and it has lasted me over 2 years.
Very good idea M2.
