Kong vs Monkey Vault
« on: July 27, 2007, 07:30:08 AM »
Hey, I was just wondering if you could clear something up for me?

The kong vault is basically the same thing as a monkey vault except for the dive right?  Because I'm watching videos and tutorials and things, and it seems to me that in all other aspects they are exactly alike, except for the fact that you dive into the kong rather than pushing off with your hands and jumping like in the monkey.

Is that right?  Or are there more subtle differences I am missing?

They are the same. "Kong" and "Monkey" were terms invented by UFF (I think... correct me if I'm wrong) to "anglicize" the French term for both of them: Saut du Chat. Saut du Chat actually translates into "jump of the cat," so neither "kong" nor "monkey" are very good terms for the vault. I prefer to use the more "correct" translation, "catpass" (mainly because I'm horrible with French pronunciation ;)).

Here is a thread from .NET if you feel like reading up more on the issue.

Thanks very much! +1

But wait.  When you say, they are the "same," do you mean exactly the same?  Or the same except the diving?  I suppose I could have the wrong name with what I have been associating with the "monkey" vault, where you would place your hands on an object, push and jump, with your legs tucking and coming between your hands, like in a kong, but without diving?

Correct. If you prefer the "kong"/"monkey" terms, a monkey vault's main distinction from a kong is the absence of a dive into the obstacle in the execution of a monkey vault.

Thanks for the +1 :).

False, a kong and a monkey vault are 2 different vaults.
in a kong vault you dive and place your hands first, in amonkey vault you place your hand, then swing your legs through. generally a monkey vault is donte on a rail.
