Soda

Ok, I am addicted to soda.

Giving up or cutting back is not an option.

Fitness-wise, am I doomed?

So how bad is your habit man? Are you like seriously jonesing for a frosted glass of ice-cold Dr Pepper right now? Are you about ready to kick back and get a crisp, refreshing taste of sweet bubbly...

Ok I'm giving you a hard time ;D but anyway...

if you want a heads up on how heavy soda consumption affects athletic fitness, off the top of my head:

Dehydration
The sugar (and caffeine) in soda makes it difficult for the body to get any hydration benefits from it. Some side effects of dehydration: increased fatigue, reduced endurance, and increased muscles soreness post-workout. Some longtime soda drinkers can't stand the taste of bland liquids - can you drink water? Pure water is just about the best thing you can put in your body, and drinking plenty every day will help offset the dehydration effects.

Increased calorie intake
I don't know anything about your body type, but if you're trying to reduce your weight / keep body fat low, soda will make that job pretty difficult. Calories from soda are empty calories, meaning you won't get any additional nutritional benefits from downing them in soda, and they'll likely turn into fat.

Increased sugar intake
Your average soda serving has tons of sugar. Reduced blood glucose levels and decreased insulin sensitivity will result from any chronic sugar habit. Giving your blood a steady supply of glucose encourages your blood to stop carrying its own glucose. When your blood glucose level drops below a certain threshold, your body produces cortisol, a stress hormone which encourages your body to produce fat.

On top of that, insulin is basically a nutrient transportation system within your body. Sugar intake causes your insulin sensitivity to drop. Low insulin sensitivity means low speed limits on your nutrient pathways - nutrients will take a longer time to get where they need to go in your body. If your muscles aren't getting the nutrients they need fast, their performance will be sluggish.

If you're not ready to go cold turkey, there's always diet caffeine-free. Honestly though, I'd rather quit :)

Soda is total garbage. Your body deserves better. PG pretty much covered it.

Some alternatives to help you kick the habit (and it may be helpful for you to transition through these in the order I give them, say, switch every few weeks or so):

1. Diet sodas. Honestly they're still not great for you, but they are a good first step if you're trying to wean yourself off. For me personally, regular soda is way too sugary. I don't drink a lot of soda but when I do (maybe one every couple months or so) I only drink diet. Non-diet soda tastes gross to me. Tooooo sweet!

2. Iced tea. Get the unsweetened kind and sweeten yourself with sugar substitute or honey (if you use honey, keep a close eye on the portion; honey is way sugary!) Alternatively, use mint leaves.

3. Juice spritzers. Juice is really high in sugar, but if you dilute it with club soda it cuts the sugar but still gives you a sweet/fizzy thing. You could cycle these in with iced tea if you wanted.

4. Lemon-mint spritzers (these are *awesome* on a hot day). Put a little sugar substitute in the bottom of a glass. Squeeze the juice of one lemon into the sweetener and mix until dissolved. Place torn fresh mint leaves in the glass and muddle with the sweetener/lemon mix using a pestle. Fill glass with ice and top up with club soda. Stir and enjoy.

5. Flavored waters. Aquafina's "Flavorsplash" is my favorite. They also have fizzy ones but those have sugar in them. The "still" waters don't. They are sweetened with Splenda. I drink 4-6 of these per day. I suppose some would argue that artificial sweetener is just as bad for you, being all artificial and chemical-y and stuff... and I can't say I disagree with them. However in my case, I have never been one to drink enough water (or any kind of fluids); and these go down really easy for me. I am the most hydrated with these that I've ever been in my life. My doctor is pleased. :)

Ultimately you want to get to the point where water or brewed iced tea (not the sweetened pre-prepared, sugary fake kind) is pretty much all you drink, if you're worried about your soda intake. Then again, there's something to be said for moderation. If you really, really like soda, go ahead and drink it, but use some restraint. Cut back to one a day or three a week or something. I drink coffee daily and wine 3-5x/week with dinner. Arguably these things are "bad" for me, but I accept that I will have a few "bad" things in my diet and I adjust the rest of my diet/exercise/sleep/overall wellness habits accordingly.

To steal a quote from the South Beach diet: "There are no bad foods, only bad habits."

Hope that helps.
She followed slowly, taking a long time,
as though there were some obstacle in the way;
and yet: as though, once it was overcome,
she would be beyond all walking, and would fly.

One of my friends weaned himself off sodas by drinking seltzer water. If you're addicted to the bubbly go for something like that.

1. Psychological step.
You have to really like parkour and sports. When you are in a season of sport, your mindset changes. When you take something to drink or eat you ask yourself subconsciously, - Will this make me jump higher and longer? If it doesn't, screw this, I wanna kong above my height/win state championship more than wasting health on soda/chips/other crap. I noticed many times that my diet changes drastically once I go from sitting on a chair/getting fat seasons to being a HARDCORE athlete (even if my results didn't change over night).

When I run, or practice parkour I feel damn HARDCORE. It doesn't matter if I came last, it doesn't matter if bailed simple lazy vault or was scared to the shits to kong over 3 feet high obstacle. I'm HARDCORE. HARDCORE people don't drink soft drinks. I feel HARDCORE usually for two or three days after last work out or watched parkour video.
When you feel HARDCORE, you don't want to drink soft drinks or eat anything unhealthy.

2. Physical step.
Exercise to the point of throwing up. Push your goddamn body until it almost breaks (don't break it though, that's gonna make you ill and sick and unable to practice). Then you won't care what you drink. Then drink icy water.

3. Read this article. This is the most HARDCORE article I have ever read. After reading it you won't be able to drink crap.

Sure, blame it on an addiction, just like all of obese America.  Then you'll say you can't precision jump far because of genetics.  And you "just weren't built" for wall climbs either.

Addictions are all in your head. I occasionally smoke but recently got drunk and did it alot. Now I crave for the cigarettes when I think about them. But when I think about my goals and exercise then they aren't an option. I now only smoke or drink alcohol when partying. Treat soda the same way. Not to mention the soda will taste alot better if you go a long time without it and have it again. If you dont want to stop forever use in moderation while still allowing yourself to reach your athletic goals.

ICED TEA!!!

Green tea is better. (Hot green tea that is.) I replaced all my coffee and soda stuff into tea from Celestial Seasonings. So there's a good alternative. Iced tea just sucks....no offense to Muse that is.

Stop being a idiot.  If you don't want to stop drinking it, then don't, but don't complain to us about it then.

Then what do you want us to tell you? Ah, dats ok, bro, you can drink soda if you want to?

Of course soda will not make you doomed for the sport, I know track athletes who drink pepsi on a regular basis. But the fact is it is better for your health to go without soda. Much better.
And you can do anything with your body if you have will and patience.

This is how I stopped I drinking alcohol:
I got completely shitfaced, followed by massive amounts of puke out of a third floor window.  Now when ever Im around anything other than beer I feel like puking.

So heres my plan for you, go drink 4 liters of soda in a half an hour.

I take no responsibility for my terrible ideas.

I wish to report that I am no longer addicted to soda. I no longer drink it on a daily, or even weekly basis. I've had a single 12 oz. can in the last month and maybe a total of 50-60 oz in the past 4-5 months.

At the time of that posting, I had 72 oz. per day.

I have never felt better.
