It depends. Last week I ran four days in a row, three miles of interval running (sprint-run-sprint-run..) each day. But yesterday I ran 4.5 miles steady with cross-country runners. And just five minutes ago I came from 3 miles interval run. There's also XC practice on thursday. So in total I try to run at least 12-13 miles per week.

However, I weigh a lot and can increase my skills just by running and lowering body fat :) Skinny people might not wanna run that much, instead concentrating on bodyweight exercises. Check out Steve's How to construct your own workout routine. The best article on exercise I have ever read :)

PS. I weigh about 235 pounds and lost 25 in last 2.5 months. My body fat is still about 16% so I can drop at least 20 more pounds :) Just to give you an idea of why I run so much.

I haven't seen any studies to this effect, but I suspect that more light-weight people fall more slowly, which could help with landings.

I would suggest looking at the APK warmup. Then adding something on top of that such as CrossFit.

It really depends on what your goals are though.

Dude...
It's gravity...

Well, there's resistance of the wind. But then, we can say that heavier people are wider and can hold in the air like airplanes  :o

The science indicates that this is true, which is why I mention it - but I have not seen any studies to confirm this. (Perhaps I should have specified "scientific studies"?) This is not to say that I could not have found any, had I bothered to look; I just didn't have the time to search for a good test before leaving that morning.

You CAN'T fall more slowly. Everything falls at the same speed. You can fall with more FORCE because you are heavier though...

Come on now. Trying to say gravity doesn't accelerate every object at the same (and thus make them fall at the same speed) is like trying to say the earth is flat.

They found out a couple hundred years ago that, negating air resistance, a feather falls the same speed as an anvil. And the difference in a large human's air resistance and a small human's is negligable.

Granted, like someone said, you can fall with more force. When a feather hits the ground, nothing happens. When an anvil hits the ground, people notice.

Well-stated! +1 for simplicity.

As a physics student, this thread scared me somethin' fierce for a minute... :P

Perhaps it should have been worded "some truth in it", but it was late. In any case, the idea behind it was as you (with the same indirectness as myself, interestingly enough - showing we're all okay with referring to similar ideas rather than exactness, sometimes) stated, that the impact would be less ;)

And for those who think that "force" is more relevant than "speed" when it comes to impacts, and noone with their head entirely in this reality can have "impacts" associated with "speed" mentally, I have but two words:

Feather Fall :P

Reminds me of an old article I read several years ago on "the speed of electricity". It's amazing what schools will teach in the name of simplicity - and many of the teachers do so simply because that's what they were taught, in their youth.

In any case, I unashamedly - proudly, even! - admit to being a gamer geek, and to having sought out internally consistent explanations for why game physics work as they do. If my understanding (of D&D physics) consisted of "real-world physics" with singular exceptions caused by "magic", those exceptions would be easy to keep track of - it's when you begin to work out the underlying laws to explain everything that the various sciences start to mix together in your head ;)
