ISU Parkour
« on: July 05, 2007, 05:49:33 PM »
hey.  I'm posting per the request of Andre.  Let's get this ISU Club going.  I'm fresh meat to running but I want to learn.  Let me know what's going on, when you train, etc.  I'm currently nursing a head wound so I can't do too much right now but I'll be good to go soon.  Hit me up.

-Chris

Hi Chris (and whoever else wants to try parkour in Ames, IA).

Here is the rough schedule for July:
9-10am mornings, 6-8pm evenings(assuming no injuries in the morning) on weekdays.  I am flexible with times with the exception of midday (11-2) when it is too hot.
Saturday and Sunday mornings depend on Friday and Saturday nights  ;D.  However at least two workouts , per weekend, usually longer.
Weekdays are basically drills and weekends are for learning new moves or just going through campus.  Usual workout places: library area,  Graphics and Design building, Black Eng. Building and pretty much wherever there are ledges, rails, walls, and other fun constructions.
Equipment: good running shoes, preferably with cushioning (I like Asics Gel or Adidas Nova Cushion).  Cross country trainers are ok but they are less comfortable when balancing on the rail.   Pants are better than shorts IMHO because you get lots of scratches and bumps on shins at first.
Parkour can be pretty demanding on the body but the entry level is pretty low IMHO so you dont need to be an athlete to start.  Head injury is not a big deal, it is unlikely you will ever hit your head doing parkour  :)

My phone is 515-230-9363 and email is asadchev@fastmail.fm.
If interested give me a call or write an email.
Ciao.

Hey I'm gonna be a freshman this fall, I would be interested in joining. I am not very experienced but have practiced some at high school. What times do you meet etc? I will be in NROTC too idk if thats a conflict or not but just throwing that out there.

Hey, I am currently the president....right now we have the gymnastics center on campus every wednesday night.  The head coach of gymnastics here is a fan of parkour/free running so he let us in right away as he owns the center. There's a fee to that which is a collective $60.  So if 12 people show up, everyone pays $5.  Second time you pay a $30 one-time insurance fee which lasts 12 months.  Everytime after that you just pay the fee.  The day that we get it and everything might change though and everything so I can keep you posted or you can contact me when you're here/come to clubfest early in the year.

otherwise, we usually do campus jams/runs structured (maybe every monday, friday, saturday, etc).  As far as some other things go, the university gave us waivers for medical and "don't sue us" stuff, but now they want to meet with us again just to "make sure" or something.  I hope by the time you're here everything is okay anyway.  There is actually a lot of stuff to do parkour on around campus that's sturdy.

Not much should have a conflict.  We are very open and have had people just come once before in September.  if they were to come again next week, we probably wouldn't even care and we'd say "welcome back!"  There's a sargaent in the army who's in our club too so it shouldn't be a huge problem if you're doing ROTC

haha go figure as soon as I am out of Iowa, Parkour explodes it seems like. I graduated from Cornell College in '07 and we had a school sponsored club there up for 2 1/2 years like ~'04-'06 and then interest sort of shifted away. At Cornell alone there was about 20 of us that would go out daily down to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids or just around campus in Mount Vernon. At the U of Iowa there was another group of like 8 and 12 in Cedar Rapids. Things sort of fizzled out I guess. I wonder what happened to all the crash pads and such we got from the school??? Anyway, awesome to see Iowa is getting big! If you ever need help with anything I'd say check out www.pkcali.com the guys over there have been at it awhile. cak010 in particular. He has been goin strong since the spring of '03 good guy, knows his stuff.

Hey I go to Luther College and we are working on starting up a parkour club.  We had a good first day, without advertising at all we had about 10 people show up.  If things keep going well on that avenue, I was wondering if you guys would be up for talking about a jam or something in the spring.  Let me know what you think!

Im up at the ISU campus and Im just getting into Parkour
Ive started conditioning and working out, but unfortunately havent been able to make it to club meetings because I have class on wednesday mornings so I havent had anywhere to really hone skills
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on low key safe places to practice on campus since I cant make it to the meetings in the gymnasium until next semester

A friend and myself have recently gotten into Free Running. We live in Jefferson, which is about a half hour away from ames, and we would love to be able to get to do some gym training over the winter. Are there any requirements about having to go to ISU to be able to come to the meetings?
