Interesting Thing of the Day Parkour Article
« on: July 04, 2007, 01:21:54 PM »
This article popped up on my Google homepage under "Interesting Thing of the Day" about 6 weeks ago, but I didn't think to post it until now. I think it is quite possibly the best media-related overview of parkour/freerunning that I have read so far.

Its alright, "best media-related overview" is pretty generous. A few things: A number of times the author alludes that this is only for young-athletic types, not anyone, so he/she looses the point of scalability. Next its stated
Quote
"The activity (and its name) were created by..."
which isn't the best understanding of the history of parkour, which is in fact part of our natural history and instinct. Those guys just crystallized the idea of it.

Then he/she just butchered the understanding of freerunning as follows:
Quote
"The biggest difference has to do with theatrics. Free-running involves a lot of trick moves, particularly mid-air flips and spins. Because these moves are merely showy, not economical—they don’t actually help the participant to get from place to place—they’re considered contrary to the nature of parkour. A free-runner may also move backwards in order to make a move as flashy as possible."

i think most of the parkour/freerunning argument is just spliting hairs anyway. to define something so individualistic is absurd. it was a decent article but it was short and i guess vague to me had i not been free running for years. im just glad it wasnt sensationalized to be the new threat to the nations youth second only to drunk driving and handgun deaths like most media goons like to spin it.

Not sure if this happens for anyone else, but when you mouse over the double underlined link of traceur in the 5th paragraph do you get a link for a book called "The Wisdom of menopause"?  Seems a tad out of place.

Weird that Google used a 2 year old article as interesting thing of the day!
