Pistols
« on: December 21, 2005, 02:59:17 AM »
I cant do a pistol yet but i think im close. Ive recently started doing the WOD's because i cant be bothered making my own workouts, because i allways feel ive left an aspect out. I aim to do pistols as quickly as possible should i do them before or after the WOD and should i do it GTG style or all in one go after the WODs.

I would suggest the GTG style throughout the day. This will allow you to train the neuromuscular patterns without burning yourself out. Keep us updated as to your progress!

If you're still getting comfortable with pistols, do GTG. Doing pole-assist pistols in a GTG style for just over a week got me from not even being able to do a negative to being able to do a few reps on both legs. I'd say, after you can do 5 proper pistols, start making it part of a proper workout. GTG is just too inconvenient if you ask me.

Ive been doing rock up pistols, using my hands as little as posssible. Ive been trying to get the negative as slow and controlled as possible and the actual push as powerfull as i can. Ive replaced the squats in the APK warmup for them.  Ill start doing them more regulary because i feel so close to being able to do them.

I have to use the pole-assist method . . . though I often use a smith machine instead of a pole . . . for pistols/one-legged squats.

If anyone is looking to make this exercise a bit harder try holding two weights on both side of you when you go down. Also going down slow and coming up fast is the better of doing these because of its emphasis on vertical push. My S&C coach has been helping me find more difficult ways to these and I seriously believe it is one of the most beneficial exercises ever.

as an assist, you can do these facing away from a set of stairs. Lower to whatever step you can, and then progress towards going all the way to the ground.

the 45 degree leg press one leg at a time can help you build up to pistols and help your knees overall as well.
