Wallspins
« on: November 10, 2005, 10:54:22 AM »
Wallspins a quick tutorial.

First and foremost. kick fears ass! once you get over the fear of falling on your head or looking like a dumhead or whatever the move will be much much simpler.

1) the first step is the run up. You want to run at a 45 degree angle and when you get close to the wall hopstep to build up and place your feet together.

2) After the hopstep quickley JUMP!!! into the motion of it. Jumping is very important because if you have no momentum you will fall and inevatabley look like a dumhead!

3) Once your into the move and have no fear of falling your halfway there. Now lets say your running at the wall from the right. You want to place your left hand pointing down on the wall and your right hand slightley away and more up from the left. With your left hand you want to support yourself and push towards the wall with it so you hold yourself up slightley.

4) With the other hand you want to push off and get more momentum out of it and with the jump should be more then enough momentum and it adds balance to this fun move!

5) Dont be afraid! Conquering the fear of this move is something you must do in order to go all the wa around. Once you do that your there and you will get it! once you go all the way around you should be able to land on your hands and feet. Once you get better at rotating all the way around try to speed it up so you land on your feet and are more capable of gracefully to exit and go on with your run!

Keep in mind that when you jump into it its not all in your jump and push off with your hand. You also want to turn your body and kinda force it around your head. That way your more likely to stand up when you finish the move!

So i hope i can get some good feedback with anything else anyone wants to add. id like to hear on the progress of some people to see if this little tutorial would help. So from The Fallen DONT FALL!!! ;D

I tend to jump more with my outside leg for some reason. Is it just because I'm leaning in that direction and it feels like I'm pushing off with that leg more? Anyone else do this?

i jump equally off both feet. some people jump ONLY off their inside leg. just do what feels comfortable as long as your technique is good.

I don't have a picture of a regular wallspin, but here's one with a few steps up the wall:

I personally like the way of finding inclined walls that get more vertical as you prgress. I've gotten good at them that way.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

I am pretty comfortable with my palmspins. I can do them either direction and from various heights. As of right now the wallspin eludes me. I feel like I don't get as much twisting or rotating force that I get from my arms when have the luxury of my hands on top a ledge and the side during a palmspin. Should I focus more on rotating off my initial jump or what? Any advise is helpful.

the bottom hand is what you can really torque a wallspin with. it is what allows you to rotate. focus on keeping strong contact with the wall with your bottom hand through the entire move. the top hand mainly acts as a steady point that helps you get in position for the move.

And force the jump more, really get those legs up. With your bottom hand firm you can make it, but often those legs way up there make it easier. When I was learning, i mostly fell off the tree onto my hands into a handstand landing, but when I just went for it i made it keeping in mind jumping and bottom hand hold.

One weird thing about these is I either do them perfect or land straight on my head every dang time.  :( ::) Anyone else with this problem, I loose my senses and forget I'm upside down or something weird huh?

um no i dont mean the other way around...unless you are thinking of it differently. when i say bottom hand, i mean the one that is closest to the ground.

When i do it at least the bottom hand is the rotating point, you turn over that it's what allows you to get your height and rotation. The top hand steadies you like Demon says, keeps you away from the wall, steadies you in the air, controls your landing. Both hands are important but you can do it without your top hand, you have to in a reverse wallspin.

good tutorial.  i would just add that you dont need to approach at 45 degrees, you can definitely approach at almost straight towards the wall.  a 2 foot takeoff, using proper blocking, will get you up and over as well.

the word "torque" in demons post is a bit misleading.  you dont generate any torque through your planted/bottom hand - thats the pivot point.  the torque, or rotational force around an axis, is generated by your jump and your other hand on the wall.

not true, i twist my bottom arm slightly which makes me rotate even faster and allows me to land standing straight up every time. pretend you bottom arm is on a door knob. now without taking it off the wall, try to turn that door knob. try it and you will see what i mean. it makes a difference in the power of your rotation.

Exactly Demon ;) I don't even move my bottom arm really, it'll help guide you thats all. If there wasn't wall there you could do them in the air like an airal. Thats how I learned them.  8)

problem of foot cliping
« Reply #19 on: December 09, 2005, 11:13:47 AM »
My feet keep cliping the wall. Is this a problem anyone had to deal with? I think either I am not tucking my legs in enough or I am not keeping my body away from the wall as much as it needs to be.
