climbing today. My friend is feeling pretty comfortable on belaying, so I wrangled him into belaying me for a few laps on some easier top-ropes. Was feeling pretty strong on some bouldering problems that I'd started last time/recently; they either were done smoother, or the moves are coming together much better. I think I will hold my current weight (I'm around 195) for the next few weeks-probably a monthish-though i want to start cutting weight pretty soon; even carrying 10 fewer pounds will help a ton with climbing (and in the comp, particularly). I think I will aim for getting down to 180 this summer; I'm not super fat, and have a trace of abs remaining. If I can do that successfully, I may consider not gaining any more weight (ever!) intentionally. It will not be easy, but I believe that with how closely I've tracked my diet, coupled with my past experience, semi lean state, and humapro I can do it relatively comfortably and in decent time.

aight enough typing, yes?

My boy is belay certified! i'm so proud. It was like watching my child take his first steps... over to a dangling rope... tie a figure 8 not, thread it through a harness, and finish with a safety not. *sniff* gosh life is beautiful sometimes! :) jokes aside, i was pretty psyched.

top rope sesh on tuesday. I've begun doing a baby hangboard routine everyday, and i went for a run today. My "slightly pushing" running pace seems to be averaging a 9-10 minute mile.

Tuesday:
-Parkour Dailies
-Climbing (1.5 hours)

Wednesday:
-Make like the gingerbread man! (1.5 miles)

fiiiinally got a top-rope line that was giving me grief! It was not the most stylish job, but damNation i wanted it! Haha the last moves were comical in how pumped my forearms were. Regardless, I got it and will now be working to cement the route. I'm trying to find a better way around this one hideous match on a gummed up hold, as that tires me out like no other, and serves as a silly crux.

And to anyone who was unfortunate enough to read my last update, I am sorry. I do know how to spell the word "knot". it has a k. why i left it out, well, that is the pickle peter picked, now isn't it?

Majority of my session were bouldering "countdowns"; essentially starting with a semi-challenging problem that took focus and was a bit draining, followed by progressively easier problems. Downclimbing was done or attempted on all problems. Afterwards, I would hop over to the top rope wall and climb up and down on small, crimpy hand and footholds.

Solid day of climbing yesterday; felt strong on top rope (downclimbed some of the routes, too) and with a little help from one of the setters at the wall, i knocked off a bouldering problem that i'd been working on for a while! Basically found a way to use a drop knee to prevent a flailing barn-door on one move (which i could occasionally stick sometimes), which made it possible to link everything.

Went for a run and since i couldn't go climbing today, I went through my hangboard circuit twice. It'll be prone to time issues and things that pop up (say, skype sessions with my girly), but i'm going to climb 3-4 days a week, and on most days that i don't i will do a small amount of hangboarding to build up my neural pathways for finger strength.

The run felt good; i'm feeling comfortable taking a slower pace. It's interesting; when i started running, i couldn't maintain form unless i ran at a faster clip. However, as my technique and stamina improve, i'm able to keep my form as i pace better.

Sunday:
-Hangboard Minis x2
-Runnin (2 miles)

been a busy little boy these past couple days. Managed to (like it was any effort to do something so fun :P) get in a couple hours of bouldering today. Definitely making progress in spite of my heavy ass and legs! Can't wait to trim trim trim down. A whole bunch of new problems were set at the wall, so i held off from top rope to work on these.

Definitely feeling stronger from climbing more frequently and the bits of hangboard work i've been doing; nothing quite like progress!

Went for a run yesterday (8:00-8:15/mile), and felt pretty solid. I will keep with the every other day running until next week, when i'll start adding in short runs to up the frequency to 4x a week. Also did some hangboard goodies yesterday.

Bouldering for 2 hours today, and a solid amount of tissue work and stretching (i'm so limberrrrrr!) knocked off a problem that I've done, but never repeated (it appears that i don't rest more than 30 seconds when climbing). I've started incorporating 4-5 minutes of stretching every 10-15 minutes of climbing so i can force myself to take breaks.

Monday:
-Hangboarding minis
-Run (2 miles)

Tuesday:
-Bouldering (2 hours)

Feeling stronger and stronger with both my climbing and running! In addition to top rope and boulder problems, i've started doing lonnng traverses around the gym to work on stamina, footwork, and most importantly, ingraining the movement necessary to climb fluidly. Can think of it as logging mileage. There's a really fun 5.9 that was set at the wall that I will be doing a lot of laps on; i really enjoyed it on my first go yesterday.

Went for night-time run on wednesday; the first mile didn't feel stupendous, but i was pleased to see that after getting loose, my form and speed picked up for the second mile. I also had to grab some food, so i picked up a couple packs of cheese to munch on for the .25 mile walk home after running (mmm pepperjack and provolone  :)) I'll be upping the frequency to 4 days/week next week, when i start adding in small 1-1.5 mile runs in between my 2 mile days. After i work up to 6 days/week, I'll probably take a light week, then launch into upping the mileage to get ready for doing a half-marathon this summer!

Oh and i start cutting weight next monday. WEEEE! I'm aiming for 180lbs with decent glycogen stores, so I'll probably have to get down to as low as 177ish to pull that off. Ambitious? Yup, for sure. I'm planning on 12 weeks cutting, 2 weeks holding, and more cutting after that depending on how things are going.

Wednesday:
-Parkour Dailies
-Runrunrun (2 miles)

Thursday:
-Climbing (1H 15 min)

Good amount of climbing today; got a couple new top rope lines under my belt, and felt very confident and smooth on others that i was repeating for my warm ups. Am also getting stronger on a particular bouldering problem that has a difficult match on a sloper-pinch before a pull to a worse sloper above. Felt strong on a crimpy 5.9 (it was rated 5.10 but definitely wasn't that hard).

I have developed a tendency to rationalize and justify not running. A common and very accessible excuse in minnesota is the cold; it's below zero with the wind chill factor... regardless i went for a night run! Glad i did; i felt pretty strong at times, and it was pretty fast. I will start running 4x a week this coming week; as it seems to take me about a mile to warm up to the movement of running, i'm thinking i'll probably just add in more 2 mile runs; if my body doesn't like it, i'll adjust, but we'll see.

Saturday:
-Run! (2 miles; nothing like an 11pm run on a saturday night... wooo exams!)

I'm currently planning out the bracketing of my calories and exercise for this cutting period; considering that I will be doing progressively more through the semester (in fitness, research, and music...yup recipe for burn out :)), I will start with just a slight reduction in calories. I'm actually already losing weight in spite of a weekly calorie average 200 higher than the past few weeks; not a bad thing, just indicative of my extra activity. Anyhoo, here's my general plan for training/exercise/funsies! Bold letters indicated High/Medium/Low carbs. I'll alternate the reduction of carbs and fats in 25g and 10g increments at first. Then emphasis will switch to carb cutting.

M: Run                                                           L
T: Longer Climbing (2 hoursish)                      H
W: Run (planning on lifting this day this week) L (but it will be medium this week because i'll be lifting)
Th: Shorter Climbing (1.25 hoursish), Run      M
F: Longer Climbing (2+ hours)                       H
S: Run                                                           L
Su: Hangboard                                              M

Okey doke so I'm really looking forward to finishing up the large number of smallish things hanging over my head; probably won't reach that point safely for another month, but that's ok. Just gotta keep cool, i spose?  :)

Didn't have time to climb today; probably for the best, as my skin wasn't super happy with me. So of course I worked on my hangboard for about 30-40 minutes! i'm feeling a lot stronger on the sloper, and my crimps are continuing to get better. Played around with half-open and open crimps; half felt much better.

Sunday:
-Hangboard (3x thru my loop)

Righto so i'm competing in a friendly climbing comp 2.5 weeks, and with the uptick in my climbing volume, i'm taking this week a bit lighter before scaling up as the comp approaches.

Ran Monday; felt strong. Was short on time tuesday, but did a lot of traversing around the gym to exhaust myself. Today i lifted (man muscle ups felt good! so good that people were staring  ;D) and then went for a 2 mile run. i'm super pleased; i timed myself on the run, and even though i was quite bushed from squats and my workout in general, i was still running 8 minute miles! weee though i really need to do my "dailies". those bastards are important, but time consuming.

Monday:
-Rannin (2 miles)

Tuesday:
-bouldering (45 min)

Wednesday:
-running (2 miles)

liftings
-back squat
45x5
135x5
185x3
225x3
265x2
280x1
295x1,1 (resting 1 minute between singles; i can still jump!)

-bicycle front lever (alternating between 1 leg tucked 1 leg extended)
bwx10x2
bwx8

-pressing (DAMN for not pressing in 2.5 weeks, these were the best they've been in a long time!)
95x5 (forgot my bar set... whoops)
115x3 (push press)
125x2 (push press)
135x3 (push press)

-good mornings
145x3
155x3
165x3

-muscle ups
bwx3x3 (hollaaaa)

-pull ups (on slopey ledge)
+35x4x2

Thanks man! I'm definitely trying; i feel like my biggest obstacle is finding time for all the stuff i want to do haha.

Ran yesterday, and climbed for about 3 hours today. I definitely need to be at the wall 3+ days/week; i really need that frequent stimulation. Top rope felt ok (not great), though my biggest progress came in bouldering today; finally got a problem that consisted of big pinches, crap sloper matches to sloper lunge-moves, and has taken me several tries over the past week or so.

Thursday:
-Parkour Dailies (finally.)
-Running (2.3 miles)

Friday:
-Climbing (3 hours)
