Gene Z., Recalled to Life
Gene:
Title of this is taken from the first section of Dickens' Tale of Two Cities.
I chose it because I feel like parkour's been stale to me --or maybe I've been stale to it. Regardless, I seem to have rediscovered at least some of my desire to move and to be fit. I've been in Shanghai for the past 2 months now and a combination of unfamiliarity (and kind of fear) of local authorities, unfamiliarity of the territory, humidity and heat, and lack of motivation, have been my obstacles to training. As of today, I intend to train in some way, shape, or form at least 5 days out of the 7-day week. Furthermore, I'd like to push beyond my limits in parkour and start training for all those movements I had wanted to do, but consistently brushed off as 'beyond my level.' I have been training for over 2 years now and it's time to view the discipline with the eyes I once had. With this newfound motivation, I feel "recalled to life."
This little journal will hopefully bring a bit of accountability to me.
Today, I did :
2 sets of 30 push ups and one set of 20 push ups
3 sets of 30 squats
1 minute of side plank (both sides) and regular plank
I am kind of surprised at how hard this was for me, considering I used to be in excellent shape and crank out sets of 30 push ups like nothing. My legs are weak, so I hope to move from bodyweight squats to regular squats when I go back to the US in August. I only really want to get used to exercising daily again, so no goals at this time.
Gene:
Similar work-out today:
2 sets of 30 push ups, the last 30 had to be broken up into 2 sets of 15.
3 sets of 40 squats
1 minute each of the three planks from yesterday
I was sore this morning from yesterday's work out despite having stretched. Finishing those last push ups were pretty painful. I may have to switch it up tomorrow.
Gene:
This was done Friday, 7/27:
3x6 divebomber pushups
3x20 one-legged lunge-squats
3x1 minute core work: russian twists, bicycles, rowing
Gene:
3x30 push ups
3x25 one-legged lunge-squats
3x1 minute crunches+2 variations
The push-ups are still hard, but I'm getting through the last set without feeling like I'm murdering myself. I look forward to returning home next Monday so I can start running and swimming. I don't know if this is just a passing fancy, but I want to start training for a triathlon. I used to be a swimmer, so I'd imagine a few months of regular swimming will get me in shape enough to adequately finish the swimming leg of an Olympic triathlon. I've never biked before, so that may take quite a bit of work. Running will also take a bit work, but I used to run 3 miles daily, so I feel like consistent practice will be the key. Then again, we'll have to wait and see if this is a real desire for me or just another one of my random ideas.
Gene:
3x8 divebomber push-ups
3x30 squats
1 minute each of 3 different core exercises
Feeling sore again already. I can only imagine what happens when I add regular running/swimming, parkour, and climbing and eventually biking to my regimen. Here's to reaching and surpassing the physical fitness I once had!
