Just thought this was an interesting read... anyone have any thoughts?

Act; for the universe will never forget your movement, nor will it ever forgive your stillness.

I like my shoes. They kind of make me feel barefoot. So i don't really think my shoes are doing me to much damage. They are very natural, and basically, just protect the sole, and add grip.

Haha, and I was planning on buying new shoes this weekend.

Well, I still will, but I'll be sure to finish this article first. It's a bit to long for me to read right now... I got to here: "However, when the impact from a running human is measured, the result is the reverse, and the impact increases with softer materials! WHOOPS! (You'll find out why later.)"

Edit: http://tullyrunners.com/Articles/RaucciArticle.htm
That link was posted in the article comments, and I'd suggest to take a look at that one too.

I went to Metro Run & Walk today, to see if I could get a pair of shoes for training in... Not the chubby sneakers, but some lightweight racing flats...

I got alot of blank stares.

Running a quarter mile, a few times a week, then each week adding another quarter mile, would not be too much. Would it?

I just went for my first real barefoot run yesterday (before reading this article) and I must say, not only did it feel better, it was more fun.

And the two guys my age I was running (also, barefoot) with totally showed up some 40 year olds who were scoffing at our parkour.

Edit: Due to the nature of this article, these shoes look perfect!

Why is it that whenever I post on a topic, it seems to go dead?   ???

FL: You barely waited to give anyone a chance to reply.  Don't worry so much about it.

I saw those shoes posted on CrossFit recently... They look like they are effective, though the style is extremely odd... I think barefoot would still be better, conditions permitting, if you just give your feet 6-8 weeks of roughening up.

Yes I agree that barefoot is better, but these shoes would be good for urban environment.

you know...glass, rusty nails, etc.

Or an outdoor enviroment where there are rocks, sticks, and cobras.

I think I may try barefoot running this weekend.

Also if you dont do them from a crazy height (at first) practicing landings barefoot is a good way to see if you are landing right.

i was thinking of getting vibram fivefingers as track shoes...the track at my highschool is probably the most evil surface to bare feet ever ever.  it feels soft, but it grips your skin and then pulls it and tears it away slowly.  it's horrendous.  the fivefingers would save me, while still allowing me to be a G and run nearly barefoot.

What's people's opinions on Feiyue shoes in relation to this article?

can Feiyue's work similarly to the FiveFingers?

i don't think any of this should be news to anyone...

obviously bare foot running allows your foots biomechanics to perform as intended. but most of the time that is simply not an option... i know i wouldn't want to wall run stucco barefoot.

Also, there is a reason we build our shoes the way we do... and there may just be a reason that people complain the Savant lacks cushioning. :)

Look, I don't want to get into anything technical as I don't want anyone to misunderstand my opinion as Five Ten's official position or design theory.

but biomechanics definitely do factor into Five Ten designs

Jason:

so you think the article is wrong in accusing shoe makers and "over-cusioned shoes"?

do you think we can reap the benefits of barefoot with minimal protection, i.e. the fivefingers or Feiyue's?

personally i think there is a balance.

Barefoot is not an option, Five Fingers... well, I'm familiar with Vibram and it's no Stealth :)

honestly, the ideal shoe for PK (in my mind) would have PK specific features(especially in the area of grip and cushion) but be comfortable enough to be your everyday shoe.

I personally would point and laugh if i saw someone wearing five-fingers walking down the street... that may just be me, but they look goofie.

yes, some shoe manufacturers do over cushion... but one of the points made in the article was about large cushion causing your heel to hit... by landing drops with correct PK form (balls of feet) in many ways you force your foot to use some of the biomechanics that this article speaks of.

what's worse is the type of cushion used... as mentioned in the article... big squishy cushion in some cases does more harm than good.

thanks for the insight.

are there any shoes currently that you believe have pk specific features?

and if not what shoes do you suggest?

i was planning on getting Feiyue's myself, and throwing some good shock absorbing insoles possibly.
