Busted my shit. (+Friend injuried)
« on: March 26, 2012, 01:23:57 PM »
So for two years I've been doing Parkour....the first vault I ever learned was the kong, which makes this even more ironic.

I've really never bailed that badly before, a handful of somewhat-bails include a failed rail flip on a fallen tree, a cat-jump-to-cat maneuver that was too big and out of my range, stuff like that, not too bad.

Today after training for about an hour at a park, me and two other friends went to train downtown. There was a walkway area that led to a rooftop. We trained in the walkway area, I went to kong a ledge and somehow my shin clipped the ledge and I went face first into the ground.

Broke the fall with my hands though, but it was a shock. I've never ever bailed off a kong before, ever. I proceeded to sit down for a few minutes and let the initial pain of the impact go away, and konged the ledge again, making it no problem. I then did it again, no problem. Anybody else have similar experiences?

Yes, Yesterday I messed up a tic-tac off a slanted ledge over a bike rack which I have successfully done dozens of times by now. I kept trying again but I had fear, hesitated and could only leap onto/off the handrail which is about a foot lower than the ledge. It is not even that high, I just slipped in such an odd manner and almost ate the bike rack...I am going to get over it next weekend...
After surprising a coworker he said something about me "sneaking around," this was my response to him: "I'm not being sneaky, i'm just standing here eating my sandwich, when I am sneaking you'll know it.
Wait..."

When I originally learned the kong, I face-planted a few times. Just on the grass, though. I haven't wiped out on anything in awhile.

i bailed a lot diving over one rail and konging a second rail, my hand eye coordination just sucks i guess, i was always able to dive roll out though.
I like Tricking and Free Running, i don't think i actually do parkour, because i do it for fun and self expression, which would change the term to free running.

It happens when we become over confident and put to much trust in our abilities (or the lack there of). It's happened to me time and time again. I'm just glad it's never been anything big.
Weight training alongside parkour always benefits, it never takes away.

Yep, over a smallish round table I should have easily been able to kong over.  That's how I sprained my wrist 3-4 weeks ago, still hasn't completely healed yet - _ -

In fact it looks like exactly what you did too. Everyone messes up.

This too. I think the reason it never happens on anything big is because that's when we're consciously trying to make it, as opposed to something smaller because we know for sure we can do it.

I spent all last summer going to this playground with my son and doing my training. I can routinely hop up onto the low fence that surrounds it and walk the entire length. Except for the one time where I somehow missed, caught my foot sideways in the rungs and fell over.

My son came over to see what happened and very helpfully smacked me in the face.
Age is just another obstacle. Get over it.

So this isn't to bad.
(back story- Hung out with friends after work, I wear a suit to work)
I was at my local Bass Proshop rocking out on the Rock Climbing wall. Well My pimp-a** dress shoes are not great for climbing, Slipped and my Jaw went right into Slope grip. Felt like a pretty solid punch to the face

I've seen like every David Belle YouTube vid, this actually came to my mind as well right after.

I didn't want to create a new topic for this side note but a good, good friend of mine who's been doing PK for the last year with me broke his clavicle doing a big dive kong that was just too big for him. He made it but overshot it and went to roll out of it from being in mid-air and hit the ground too hard. Its always the clavicle. :/

He's 16, but his parents are strict hard-asses (pardon) and might not let him continue PK. That won't stop him but still, outright discouragement probably won't make him happy for the next 6 weeks as he recovers.

Something similar happened to me recently. I was working my tricks last week and I focused alot on my back full. When I finished I wanted to do one more back full before I went inside. I had landed a bunch earlier but I wasnt focused and just went for in and I flopped in mid air. I didnt get hurt but it was and eye opener.

I've been konging some small railings on my porch.  I'm 100% comfortable with it, but yesterday I clipped my trailing foot on the railing and got flung forward.  Landed on all fours on grass so no injuries, but definitely  got the adrenaline rushing.  Thats why I love sports like parkour, there's always a possibility of messing up, and that's what challenges us.  (And yes, this is my first post :) )
Nothing feels better than a laid out backflip off a 5 foot ledge...
