Wall up help
« on: February 14, 2012, 11:13:46 AM »
A while ago I had to put my elbow up before I could push myself up, now I was able to kip up chest over the wall. I stick to that urban current tutorial on wall up, and he says that whenever I'm able to get my chest up, I should be able to put my hand on top. Maybe I was too used to putting my elbow on top of the wall, because now when I kip up, I instinctively slam both elbows on top of the wall, which pinched the ulnar nerve and hurt like crazy. Is there like a strength benchmark for a complete wall up? I could do roughly 8 or 9 pull ups on a good day and 5 or 6 on a bad day. My problem seems more technique-wise rather than strength, but then I don't know. Should you be able to do multiple wall up before get tired? Because I can only do like 3 before I had to get down, mainly because of the pain. Any tips on technique would be appreciated

If you could get a video up and going, we would be able to help you out more.

Mostly, it sounds like more of a physical aspect. If you are slamming your elbows down, your arms aren't supporting your weight in the first place. Another thing, how tall is this wall? If you have an average pull-up max of about 7, trying to do climb-ups without any momentum might not be what you need to work on right now. Try a lower wall to get your form down and then do negatives or plyo-negatives.

Just in case, plyo-negatives are basically, run - tic tac - climbup - come down as slow as possible into cat position - leap and roll - repeat.

Try for the video and we can help more.

Doh! Dude, I completely forgot to put up a wall climb video for you. So sorry, man.

I still can't do many pull-ups, but really the trick to it is pushing off the leg that is on the wall and timing the climb-up with the kip.

It really helps to have an overgrip so you can practice without having to slap your hands quickly onto the top, since they would already be completely on the wall in the first place. If not, I can still manage to somewhat get myself over if I have a couple walking steps into the climb. You don't always have to go for that hand-switch technique, that will probably come once you can progress into those weighted pull-ups everyone talks about, since that will help a lot in explosive power (anyone please, correct me if I'm wrong).

It's a strange thing when it comes to climb-ups. I haven't progressed a lot when it comes to deadhang pull-ups, but every time I go into my backyard, whether it be taking out the trash or something like that, I just jump onto my wall, using the overgrip, and pull myself on top of it. Now I can just pop onto the wall in about a second.

But a video might help a lot. You might be able to do a perfect climb-up but your technique may be all wrong. If you can't do that, maybe you could describe in detail what you do technique-wise?

^over grip helps a lot, my advice would be, if you can, once you grip it then go to kip up to chest get your hands on the far side of the wall, so that you finger tips are barely hanging over the edge, but thats just how i do it, good luck

Oh I did try overhand a while ago, and I didn't even need the kip up to be able to launch myself up. So I thought I would move on to normal grip.

I don't have a camera so I can't record anything. My climb up was just normal: kick(or kip, whatever you may call it) up, then instead of placing hand I just put both of my elbow up. I tried a couple from running into cat, it was much quicker and I could feel that I got more air but I still slam the elbows on the wall, so I guess it just a matter of drilling it and more strength training. But just can't switch the damn hands for some reason, but it's probably mental.

And those plyos sound nice, I'm gonna try them out

Thinking about it, I don't even understand the mechanic of shooting up and placing the hand on top. Just can't picture it

i dont know why but my computer is freaking out and the sound is all jacked. Jesse makes decent tutorials so I'm hoping this one works...

You never want your elbows to touch in a climb up. Safety reasons; glass, nails, other sharp objects that you havent noticed have a bad habit of just appearing out of nowhere and you end up with cuts along your forearm. That = bad. Trust me.

Check the video, see if it helps, and if you have more questions, put em here and i'll try to answer asap

also you can just try to jump as high as you can and just bypass the kip up

This one kinda reminded me that someone once told me to kick up and out, so maybe I got it all wrong for a while lol. Urban current still says that kick up then place hands maybe I'm just wasn't strong enough. Ill try this one out, thanks colby.

I'm ok with cut elbow but when the pinched nerve arrives, it feels like someone hold my arm and trying to twist it off it sucks!
