Any advice?
« on: January 29, 2012, 11:52:50 AM »
I just started parkour and I already love it. The only thing I am having trouble with is gripping ledges. I can grip cylinders and pipes easily but when i run walls i have a hard time grasping the edge of it at the top. Any suggestions? I can't buy gripping gloves.

Im no good at advice, but I guess focus less on climbing up the wall, but focus it on gripping the top. Im not sure if that  will really help  :P

Are you worried about damaging your hands?

May I sugesset that increasing your jumping power so you can just propel yourself to the top of the wall. Do squats and Squat Jumps to increase your leg strength.

As far as your hands, practice on rock climbing walls or save up money to some cheap fingerless gloves.

Might just be lacking finger strength. It's different with pipes and things that you can get a full-hand grip on. Try doing pull-ups on a ledge, or other hand/finger/grip-strength exercises.
Age is just another obstacle. Get over it.

have you guys ever tried wall climbing and grabing on to a cement ledge with a perfectly flat wall and top so the edge is hard and sharp. whenever i try to hold on it kills my hands and scrapes it a ton. does this ever happen to you?

Either not enough grip strength or like Will's situation. Usually your hands would toughen up as a result of holding onto walls, but stop holding onto sharp edges once it does more than just make your hands rough :P.

Also, one thing we need to know is how you're holding onto the ledge of the wall. Are you only holding yourself by the tips of your fingers, using your fingers completely, using overgrip, or anything like that.

Just keep climbing on that wall. Your hands wil get tougher.

Might just be lacking finger strength.
My thoughts as well.

I asked my rock climbing friend and he said
- Any of those hand-squeezy things
- A training board
- Sets of dead hangs from door frames (most suggested, 5 sets of dead hangs 10 seconds each, arms straight)
(free solutions)
