Need s/o help with wall run !!
« on: November 28, 2011, 03:36:10 AM »
I'm very new for parkour, I know how to Roll, Land, Vault ( just some vault like Kong Vault, Lazy Vault,... ) and now I am trying to learn Wall Run but every time I kick on the wall, I slip out  ??? :'(. I try it every time I free but I still slip out the wall. Can anyone tell me what I have to do to not slip out the wall ;). Sorry for my bad english cause I not England or American.

You should to kick into the wall and not down, if you kick down you slip, if you kick into the wall you go up. Anyway there's a very usefull video:

Maybe either your shoes or the wall are too slippery to get a good grip on. Or maybe try running slightly faster.

What surface are you trying to run on? Some painted walls can be more difficult, but still not impossible!

Make sure you invest the time and practice the progressive techniques included in the video. Don't just kick off the wall once or twice and expect to have a perfect wall run. You should be repeating the progressive exercises hundreds of times before you should expect to see improvement.

Welcome to training in the art of Parkour!

Dear sir McC I kick on the painted wall but when I kick up, I can go up a little then slip. For example the floor and the ceiling high 4m, I only jump and touch the point at 3,7m. But thanks for your help sir !

I've found that tutorial is the best out there Conan yet it doesn't explain if you need to throw in a second step but either way, it helped me find out I was supposed to bring my knee up

there is no second step to throw in, you do a 1 step wall run, grab the top, then do the climb up.

multiple step wall runs take some time to explain, but in a short term explanation, they are best to use if the object to grab is on the side of you or behind you.

I like Tricking and Free Running, i don't think i actually do parkour, because i do it for fun and self expression, which would change the term to free running.

Thanks you guys for your great idea and now I know how to do wall run but can anyone have a video about wall run pain. When I jump to hit my 1st leg on the wall, I'm OK but when I do it a 2nd time the part from my knee to my foot it hurt. I try again and I still hurt. Now when I run about 100m, that part hurt very much.

Grip:

A second step can be useful. But it's not a hard thing to integrate into the tutorial. All the same concepts apply. You're just taking the leg you shoot up, and pressing it against the wall for some added friction and push. Helps some people, doesn't help others. Depends a lot on height of the athlete.

Conan, it sounds to me like you're having some shin split pains. In which case, you need to stop doing wall work, and rest your body. You're heading towards injury. If you're not already doing conditioning, stop everything you're doing and start doing more conditioning, or else you'll damage your body in the long term. If you have more questions, especially how to get rid of shin splints, let me know.

Hey Adam, there was one thing that's always confused me which has never been mentioned in the Wall-Up tutorial. What I was wondering is how, in conjunction with your foot placement, your legs should be. I noticed that some people keep their legs almost straight and at waist level, but for people like me I realized that I'm placing my feet a few inches below with bent legs, depending on flexibility. I thought that the concept of a wall-run is transferring your momentum into the wall, but I don't understand how you are able to push off if your leg has no room to push anywhere other than out. So I guess the main question is: Should the pushing leg be generally tense, locked (guessing not), etc.?

The piece you're missing has to do with the leg pushing off the ground. Your wall leg should be contacting the wall with only a slight bend at or slightly above waist height. And I know, if you're running straight at the wall it seems like you'd do nothing but bounce off it, horizontally. But there's some vertical forces at work. When you approach the wall, the leg that's not contacting the wall but pushing off the ground is giving you some momentum in an upward direction. Ballpark figure, probably around 45º up and towards the wall. That means that as you make contact with the wall, you're adding the upward force from your take off leg to the bounce of the contact leg to equal mass having momentum in an upward direction on the wall.

Conan,

Sorry, I'm trying to decipher your digi-cabulary, here. Are you saying you want some videos for Conditioning in Parkour? If so, they are -everywhere- on Youtube. You search "Parkour Conditioning". Here's a specific playlist from Urban Current:

http://www.youtube.com/user/UrbanCurrent#grid/user/306CFF872DE196C9

As for Shin Splints, they are caused by an imbalance of muscle on your lower leg, specifically the calf and shin muscle. This imbalance creates problems for the nerves running past your shin bone and down to your foot, and that's where you get the intense pain. Most people have enough calf muscle but not enough shin muscle, so my suggestion is to build your lower leg to resist the strain that causes shin splints. What you need to do is create a routine of ankle lifts, maybe 50-80 a day, for a few weeks. Rest outside of this routine, and in a couple weeks you'll be cured and forever stronger. I had shin splints for a year or two, started this routine, and in a few weeks they were gone, and have not come back in any way shape or form. If you don't know what ankle lifts are, here you go. Dogen made a fantastic video about strengthing ankles and legs, so look for his ankle lifts in the video. Try some of his other exercises, too.

Hope it helps.!

Press ups? No secret to those. Just keep trying. You need strength and balance. And both only come through tons and tons of practice. Just keep trying, no matter how sad or pathetic the attempt is. Bit by bit, you'll build the strength, and probably the balance alongside it. Practice regular handstands and pushups in the meantime, to supplement it.
