Wall Gainer
« on: February 20, 2007, 07:25:30 AM »
or wall front flip, whatever.

how do you do it, is there any real trick to it other than making sure you get enough height, and keep your head away from the wall?

I've done them in the gym off of walls. The trick is to get your take off foot planted against the wall such that you have upward and backward momentum. I found that a 45 degree push off has worked well. Arms need to be overhead on takeoff and the non-planted foot heel drives behind your head as soon as your planted foot leaves the wall. The arms flick forward like a regular front flip to help rotation with the non-planted heel drive. You MUST not collapse your torso, otherwise you will land on your back. It's not a terribly hard skill to mess up as you just land on your back most of the time, but if you don't have a good sense of rotation you won't be able to make it back to your feet.

Anyway, this would be a wall "loser" or wall front flip as you said. Gainer = back flip going forward, loser = front flip going backwards. Kind of self explanatory in the name. :P

A loser sounds really hard. I can do a gainer (sort of) but that sounds really hard

THESE ARE FUN!!!!! Anyways here goes the tech:

1. Approach wall with the intention of doing one. Make sure that you are leaning forward and that you jump at a 45 degree angle.
2. Plant your foot up high, and immediately push off and swing your other leg upwards (Other leg is most of your momentum)
3. Your arms should have been overhead before you planted your foot, swing them AROUND. Not down, not up, but around in the direction you are going (think of radial acceleration...)
4. tuck reall hard and hope that you pushed off hard enough not to hit the wall.
5. spot landing, unfold, land, try not to hit the wall again ;)

It just takes practice on a gym wall, the technique will click eventually. I do NOT recommend this outside, its a LOT harder. Its possible and been done but some people have messed up pretty bad....

O yes it is quite hard, hahahah, first time i did it, i was like WOOOP WOOP LETS DO THIS! Went balls out, got halfway around and couldn't spin anymore, landed on my back, got the wind knocked out of me, no fun at all, ahha and havnt tried since then no matter how much i wanna do one, so the gym is really the only "safe" option

hey guys, i've been dissecting this move for awhile. here is what i do:

run at the wall and push of both up and backwards (yes 45 degrees).
Next try and kick your back leg up over your head while hiking your ass up as high as you can get it. (this helps a lot)
While doing this throw down to your legs...dont bring you legs into your chest, but try and bring your chest into your legs. if you bring your legs into your chest this will counter your forward rotation. stay tucked, and when you want to come out to land....dont, wait a split second longer then come out of your tuck.  and boom you are done. dont get discouraged, this is one of those moves that you get after doing them for a day or two...then next time you try and do it, you can't, then you get them again...and then next time you....well you get the idea. its inconsistent.

here is a vid of me doing it,

let me know if this helps!

i can't really add much to what people have been saying, since they pretty much covered it.

but the first couple times you try it... make sure to commit. if you come with us to the gym i might be able to demo/help, even though mine still need work

I don't quite agree with the technique you're teaching IAmFree.
First you dont need to push out at a 45, you should go as straight up as you can without hitting your feet on the wall when you come around. As you push off the wall have your arms up above your head and be stretching your whole body UP much like a wall-climb. When you've almost reached the top of the jump, tuck as you said "dont bring you legs into your chest, but try and bring your chest into your legs." and scoop down with the arms over your legs. The difference is that you are using the wall to get height, and the tuck to get rotation, rather than using the wall to get rotation and not really having any height. Take a look at Sat's wall-inward-front and compare. He does a great job getting the height first, then tucking.

Man first time i tried this i over rotated and tore a muscle in my neck. It just takes a lot of control. The technique is helpful but over powering is just as dangerous as under rotation.
