"No Trans Fat!"
« on: January 20, 2007, 05:45:28 PM »
In the past week, I've noticed that almost every food has started labeling itself "No Trans Fat!"

Really, these foods always had no trans fat, so are they saying that now as some sort of sales tactic, or are there new laws about the Nutritional Facts?

Company's are finally required to list trans-fat on the labels of their products, so it's become a great sales-tactic. The good thing is that the media hype and ensuing interest in trans-fats is perfectly legitimate, as hydrogenated oils are one of the most unhealthy substances you can consume :P

It was about time it happened.

Do you know when the canadian legislation on trans fats is coming into effect? Currently they can round down trans fats from as much 0,4g to a flat ''0'' on the label and claim it doesn't contain any. That's why you can still see a lot of products that have partially hydrogenated oils and still proudly have the ''NO TRANS FATS!'' label. I even remember seeing some choco cookies with an ''Good Source of Omega 3's'' a while ago...

Here's an interesting read on wikipedia if you want to learn the chemistry behind all of this fatness.

I found it rather interesting.

if there is less than a certain ammount of trans fat, probably around 0.4g, the USDA allows for labels to say 0g of trans fat. so instead of looking at the box, just become a label reader at avoid hydrogenated oils, and while were on topic of label reading, high fructose corn syrup is another one to stay away from.
